Title: Gifts for the kids
Post by: Sir Edward on 2009-10-12, 14:08:51
I like Sir Brian's idea of giving a small gold coin to some of the kids at the faire. I'm going to have to steal this idea, I think. :)

These are coins that I already have gotten before, to use as trading items for geocaching (http://www.geocaching.com/), and are about 50 cents each:

They're out of period, of course. But it's hard to get cost effective replica coins otherwise. I found some from a variety of centuries, that are more in the $10-$20 range each, rather than about 50 cents:

Though they have some medieval coins that are a little cheaper, but at $2.40 each it would still add up:

But this is kinda cool too... gemstones, about $1 each:

And an interesting article on the rise of gold coinage in Edward III's reign: http://www.coinlink.com/Articles/world-coins/rise-of-the-gold-standard-in-14th-century-england/#more-113 (http://www.coinlink.com/Articles/world-coins/rise-of-the-gold-standard-in-14th-century-england/#more-113)

Those are all great sites and a lot of cool coinage.  :)

I like giving the actual gold dollars out just in case the kid happens to be like me when I was a kid
and I couldn't hold onto even a quarter for longer than a day!  :D

Gotta say, I love this idea. I think the gold dubloons would be awesome, particularly at only fifty cents a piece. I know I would have LOVED that as a kid. The gemstones would also be really awesome, particularly if you had a whole pouch full of them when you pulled one out.

Yeah, I think this is all a fantastic idea. If when I was a kid, a knight had knelt down to speak to me and give me a gold coin, I'd probably still have it to this day.

The gold dollars are great because they're real money. The doubloons have the virtue of looking a little more period and being slightly cheaper. I think both ways are great. :)

Well regardless if we give out real or replica coins we should ALWAYS make them earn it!  ;)

Absolutely.

"Here, hold this for a while, kid."  :)

Yeah that is what the pirate wannabes hand out!
...Besides you don't want to get me on that Pirate vs Knight rant again!  :D

Well, you know... those pirates are a cheap lot, with their plastic money!

Oh btw I noticed the one cast member, the pirate queen...

was closely scrutinizing our group when we were relaxing on the tree bench close to the Moresca store,
especially when we were interacting with the kids...not sure if it meant anything or not, I just thought
it was a bit peculiar.  :-\

Probably didn't mean anything. She's been with the faire forever in a variety of roles (including Anne Boleyn). She probably was just keeping an eye out with this particularly strange lot hanging out. :)

Strange? What makes you think our group was strange?  ;)

Well, I dug out my gold doubloons and set them aside with my armor. It looks like most of the pouches I have are a bit big for this purpose.

Sir Brian, if you do indeed have a spare, it looks like I could use it!

Yes, she is. Most of the cast members I've met are pretty nice. Usually just as crazy as us playtrons though. :)

Lord Bailey the Templer at PaRF gives out the plastic gold coins to the kids.  I keep my pouch with me coins and gems in my snapsack so it is really hard for me to give the kids anything.  Besides, that would really cut into my gambling funds, and the way my luck at table has been the last few weeks, I need all the coins I can get for that :-\ .

I will locate it for you Sir Edward and have it for you on closing day...that is when you plan to attend

Sir Brian

I love this idea, it would be fantastic for the kids and likely be at least a highlight of their day. I think I too will, borrow this idea for next season. I was thinking about something simular seeing that I have lots of scrap metal around that could be turned into pendents- etched with a knights seal or something- and by the way- this is an actual chunk of armor...maybe I'll still do something like that if I have the time but the gold coins are fantastic ideas! :)

That's a cool idea as well! I think a young lad would be quite impressed with a "piece" of your
armor!  :)

I got a buddy who does just that...goes with the gold dollar coins; gets a bunch and he pays for everything in the Faire that he buys with those.  Kinda puts him in the spirit of things...I'm thinking of doing the same.

Yeah, Ive heard people talk about using the gold dollars to pay for their faire expenses. It's a nice way to feel more period. The only difficulty is that a dollar doesn't go as far as a period coin would, so you have to carry a bunch of them. :)

As for gifting the kids with them... ugh... Apparently concerns have been raised about it being... well... concerning that "those knights" at MDRF are giving things to kids. I mean really... really? People are worried about knights bending down to speak kindly and give a coin to a child, with the parent's supervision? We've been asked to tone it down.

I think some faire-goers just aren't happy unless they're complaining about something.

you know a member of my church is a member of ummm crud i can't remember what order of knights it is... anyways, every Sunday before church he's a greeter and gives kids a brand new gold dollar. there' super happy about it. he told me it meant nothing it was just a way he knew to make kids happy hehehhe.

That sounds like someone looking to sue for something...I really, really dislike people w/that mindset.  I remember this girl I dated had a minor fender bender and she wanted to go to court because her brother had done so and got a $5k award for pain and suffering...I wanted to take him out back and teach him a freakin lesson in pain and suffering.  WTH?  He didn't need that money, his car's damage was less than a grand.  She was an idiot too, no wonder I dumped her.  lol

Yeah, I really hate that attitude. The "let's see what I can get away with" sort of me-me-me mentality. It's sickening.

Yea; and I have little patience for people of that sort.  Those very same people would consider the thought alien of actually helping someone else out just for the good it would do.

Thank you, Sir Andrew, much obliged.  And we're agreed...but I have a question for you; what with MDRF's weapons policy, they seem to have no problem selling the shaped wooden clubs to all patrons.  Wonder if any bludgeonings have taken place thus far...

I've read some of them; I never knew that parents encouraged their kids to take a whack at other faire-goers...I mean, it can be all in good fun but how about asking first?  I think I commented in that thread that I'd start confiscating said sticks and using them on the offending parents should they ask for them back.  Jerks.

Thankfully such jerks are rare, but they're out there. It's re-assuring when the parents are on the ball though. This past weekend, I was sitting on a bench, with my helmet beside me. A little boy (probably about 3 or 4 years old) came up, and he started feeling and tapping the helmet. His parents quickly shouted over to him to stop. It was fine in this case, but I was pleased that his parents were right there and keeping a watchful eye.

Yea, I like the ones who are respectful.  Had one woman bring her shy little guy over to check me out and it seemed she knew a bit about the subject; that's always reassuring, when the parents have a knowledge of what it is we do.  It isn't just costuming to them...which is good, because it isn't that for me either.
