We've mentioned before that one of the cool things we could do with the Order of the Marshal is to do some charitable activities, and educational demos and the like. There are other groups out there that do these sorts of things already, of course. The Order of the Fiat Lux does some charitable activities and demos, for instance. The Chivalry-Today folks do educational demos, and I think the Order of Selohaar has done some medieval demos at children's hospitals and the like.
But of course such things don't strictly need to have a structured organization to accomplish. This could be something that forum members in general participate in.
I'm just wondering what sorts of ideas you guys might be able to come up with.
Here's a short list off the top of my head. Some of these will work both as fundraisers for charity, or as educational presentations:
- Combat demos
- Presentations on knights, chivalry, and weapons/armor.
- Visits to schools or summer camps
- Visits to childrens' hospitals
- Some local events might enjoy having us do demos/presentation
If we get serious about doing any of these, we'd need to spend some real time working out details. For instance, a presentation needs material, both the spoken kind as well as props. (props are easy, amongst us we have quite a few weapons and armor)
Thoughts?

I will be helping my friend with his 4th grade history class tomorrow. I'm not doing a full demo, just showing armour bits and talking about armour. My buddy is in the SCA and has already covered castles and weapons in two other segments. I will be happy to share my notes after I see what worked and what didn't work. I've received a ton of helpful advice (http://www.myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=23025) on myArmoury in this regard.

I like the idea...especially children's hospitals...summer camps can be fun too. Local events...like?
Rodney, sounds cool...let us know how receptive the kids were. The first 60 seconds comprise 'make or break' time...good luck tomorrow!

Summer camps LOVE living history demonstrations. We do a very successful display with an encampment, some light contact demonstrations of the efficacy of armor, and if the camp needs a break, do some live-steel combat demos to keep the kids occupied. It's awesome to sit around and answer questions! I'll be sure to watch this thread - who knows? Maybe I'll get some new inspiration, myself!

hey a childrens hospital visit what a neat idea. :)

I'm interested in the concept, but I'm lacking any sort of useful details or ideas at the moment. :o

Most children's hospitals have a specific liaison on staff that sets up interesting visits be it sports stars, movie stars, clowns, human society, knights, etc. I recommend finding one near you and contacting the liaison. They would be able to answer all of your questions and provide suggestions.

I concur! I would love to be part of these kind of visits...what's more I think I can convince a certain fairy to accompany us because little girls are crazy about the sparkles. :)

But yes, I like that idea a lot.

Can't say I blame him...ensorceled or not, he seems quite happy! lol

I've participated in more than 40 demos over my life and I think you've got a good list there.
Look around your area and see if they have a summer arts fesival and get into that if you can.
