Title: MDRF 2009
Post by: Sir Edward on 2009-08-24, 19:12:40

Well, opening week is upon us! The extended weather report on yahoo weather is called for scattered thunderstorms all weekend, but not before or after. Figures. I hope they're wrong!

Heh, we had pretty much the same weather this past weekend at Tuxedo. I got pretty drenched in
my armor (on the outside for once!) and have a bit of rust to clean up before opening weekend @ MDRF.
We ended up leaving early on the second day at Tuxedo so I could wipe off most of the water and
minimize the damage. I at least finally got to meet Christian and his lovely wife in person this weekend!

Sorry I missed out on that drink you offered Christian; I quite literally had to take a "rain check" on that!  ;)

Post by: Sir Edward on 2009-08-25, 15:04:12

Which drink is that? :) I know I mentioned you'd be there, and said to say Hi for me.

I'm glad you got a chance to meet Christian and his lovely lady wife Maureen. High class people they are!

Yeah, I saw how wet it all looked in your pics on FB. That's one nice thing about the aluminum mail, though of course the other metal bits can still be an issue. You can bet I wouldn't have been out there with an Albion on my hip in the rain! Or my plate armor either.

Speaking of armor, my Merc's Tailor stuff (including the rework of my plate B+B) should be here soon. I don't know whether I'll have it all together for the weekend, but it would be pretty amazing to walk in on opening day with the new knees, eblows, and vambraces!

Stupid thunderstorms! Still better than 100 degrees and 90% humidity, like some other opening weekends.

That weather may change to the worse with tropical storm Danny forming up this morning. Stand by Sir Dragonlover,
it's heading your way first!

Still at 40% chance of scattered showers and sub-80 degrees, I think I'll risk the armor...besides it's kids weekend!  ;)

Yep, opening day in armor is a rare treat. I'm planning on it too.

Huzzah! What time are you planning on being there? I've stressed to my lovely fairy wife that
I'd like to make the opening ceremonies...Hopefully we'll be there for them!  ;)

Good question! It would be nice to make gate. We'll have to figure out our morning schedule.
Title: Re: MDRF 2009
Post by: Sir Edward on 2009-08-28, 15:34:24

Weather report is still calling for scattered/isolated thunderstorms, and the temperature prediction is up to the low 80's (they were called for about 78 on Saturday originally). Muggy and humid, probably. Ick.

We may try to make gate, but we'll see if we manage it. :)

Still going to wear the armor?
Title: Re: MDRF 2009
Post by: Sir Edward on 2009-08-28, 18:01:37

That's the plan!

I got some work done on the mail last night in preparation. I added the triangular expansion areas at the bottom of the sides so it won't pull on the splits so much. This was done in period too.

Armor it is! We will have to try and maintain our dignity to NOT run for shelter screaming like little girls if a thunder storm hits!  ;)

That's what I want to hear! The little ones have too much fun with all of us
for you guys not to go in armor. Besides, there are plenty of things, trees, bldgs. etc.
that you guys can duck under. Good luck my fine lads, and enjoy yourselves!!!

well how did it go?
Title: Re: MDRF 2009
Post by: Sir Edward on 2009-08-30, 02:24:53

It was pretty muggy today. By the end, I was dying to get out of the armor, but mostly due to my back muscles rather than the heat. I strained them a bit this week hunching over my mail to make repairs and improvements, which made carrying the helmet a painful exercise. But it was a fun day, and a rare treat to be able to wear armor at all on opening weekend!

Well, I'm watching the weather like a hawk again. Figures that so far they're calling for rain this coming weekend again. I hope that changes!

We keep getting beautiful weather on my pager-duty weekends, and I've missed about 2/3 of the faire season.

I'm anxious to give my plate armor a workout.

Funny thing is they were forecasting rain this past weekend all during last week right up to
Friday afternoon then it changed to a few showers early Saturday morning, which happened
but stopped by 5 or 6 AM.  :-\

Now the link you provided is saying rain but this one is forecasting less chance of rain.

I guess we'll have to do the old wait and see game! ;)
Title: Re: MDRF 2009
Post by: Sir Edward on 2009-10-06, 13:30:09

I'm keeping my fingers crossed because I'm running out of faire season!

We only have 3 weekends left, of which I can only go to 2, and I won't be there on the Saturday of the closing weekend, so I'm down to only 3 faire days left.

So who is going to MDRF in armor this weekend? The druids have revised their forecast a bit...
http://www.accuweather.com/us/md/crownsville/21032/forecast.asp?partner=accuweather&traveler=1&metric=0 (http://www.accuweather.com/us/md/crownsville/21032/forecast.asp?partner=accuweather&traveler=1&metric=0)

http://www.weather.com/weather/weekend/USMD0113?from=36hr_topnav_undeclared (http://www.weather.com/weather/weekend/USMD0113?from=36hr_topnav_undeclared)

Saturday still has more of a chance of rain than Sunday, so I think I'll wear armor on Sunday but I'm
good for either day if anyone is planning to wear armor on Saturday.  ;)
Title: Re: MDRF 2009
Post by: Sir Edward on 2009-10-08, 14:38:01

I'm going to watch the weather reports pretty closely, but right now I'm still hoping to aim for Saturday for armor, just because it's nice to wear it when I'm rested. If I'm up to it, I could wear one kit each day. Heh. :)

My hope is to get the plate armor out. If the weather report remains as a light chance of small showers, that's probably not enough to stop me at this point.

I really want to see if the report changes at all tomorrow though.

Morning showers, then partly cloudy the rest of the weekend. I can probably armor up in that. I'm tempted to wear armor both days, and get both kits out there. You know, take advantage of the cool weather. We'll see if I feel up to it!

Damn it I missed seeing you in your new and improved steel armor!  :(

With the forecast for some rain, I decided to work and make some overtime to help pay
for our stupid car repairs.  >:(

The rain was pretty light and infrequent on Saturday, so it wasn't too bad. But it all worked out OK today anyway:

Thanks for wearing the steel two days straight, I know how uncomfortable that can be and appreciate
getting to see your new and improved steel harness! :)

btw, sorry I missed saying goodbye yesterday! I thought you, Kat and Marie would come over and join
us for the small combined birthday/anniversary gathering we were having. It turned out to be at the
White Hart. There were plenty of cup cakes to go around! :)
Title: Re: MDRF 2009
Post by: Sir Edward on 2009-10-12, 13:40:32

No problem. Yeah, we had meant to come over to the White Hart but got sidetracked by other people. You know how it... it's faire. :)

We ended up hanging out in the White Hart area for most of the rest of the time after your group went up towards the gate. Caught up with more friends there, and did a little shopping right in the vicinity.

Man, the weather was great for armor this weekend! The plate armor can get miserable in hot weather, but this worked out perfectly. I was pretty excited to get a chance to wear it all weekend. The fact that I was able to go 2 days straight with it shows how much of an improvement Allan made to it. I could still walk at the end of the day too. :)

I'll be at PaRF this weekend, Ceann is playing, otherwise I'd shoot down to MdRF for the jousting.  Just a reminder PaRF is open one more weekend after Maryland closes, 10-31/11-1.  There are discounted 2 for 1 tickets available at 1057.com (a local radio stations website) and I think there may be some half price tickets available at Halfpriceharrisburg.com.  I should be there both days if anyone is coming up.

Well, the MDRF season is done once again. Man, it went by fast! I feel like I was hardly there and didn't do much. I managed to be there only 7 of the 19 days (I used to go for more like 15 or so).

Closing day was sort of an odd day too... My mom was visiting (with her broken foot), and several groups of other friends were out and about, so I spent a lot of time sitting in one place or another, not out "getting face time" with photo-ops and lots of kids, though I was interviewed for some sort of audio-only school project. I also was fighting a headache early on, which I fought off quite well, but it still left me spacey. Kat didn't get to stay for the whole day, so we spent the last 10 minutes of the faire on the phone. And the great parking lot escape was a nightmare, more-so for my mom who tried to beat the rush and ended up getting stuck in it for more than two hours.

But as strange of a day as it was, it was a great day and was over way too quick. So many friends that I won't see again until next year (except through facebook, etc). In some ways the faire keeps getting better and better. So now begins the 10-month break, but at least we'll have other faires in the meantime. :)

I heartily agree that this entire faire season went by so blazingly fast that I can hardly believe the
MDRF is done and over!  :o

Oh btw, I had the opportunity to meet the faire's general manager Jules Smith Jr. last night on the
way back to my car after leaving you and after introducing myself I complimented and thanked him
on his hard work to provide us with a wonderful and successful faire season. I think he may have been
just a little glad it was over because of all the work and concerns involved with managing such a large
fair.  :-\

Don't forget that this is the bonus closing weekend for PaRF.  I'll definitely be there Sun. and most likely for a very brief time Sat. afternoon.  Also, just an FYI, Good Morning America did a short story on Ren Faires and did the filming for it at PaRF.  It aired last Sun. and during the previews at the begining of the show they ran short clips of shots taken at Faire that weekend and a close up of me was featured there.  Just another "photo-op" courtesy of the armor.
