Title: ModernChivalry trip to Dupont Castle
Post by: Sir James A on 2011-04-06, 22:07:28
I heard back from the owner of Dupont Castle regarding a small group trip. I suggested a Saturday since some of us have longer drives and could use a day to rest afterward.

"I guess around noon would be good. I assume you would be here for about one to two hours. As far as I know right now, Sat the 16th or Sat the 23rd would be okay. You should keep weather in mind, one of the nice things about this place is the view from the roof, and if we have fog or rain, it kind of messes that up."

Let's coordinate something. :)

I'm out.  The road trip from, and back to, Minnesota would be a killer. ;)

Gah I couldn't go that far... I'd be lucky if I could get to Maryland or whatever. Would love to do it though...

Regrettably I cannot make it either! I have just this week been reassigned to another project which will require me to work every Saturday up until mid-June.
I'm fortunate my boss is going to still allow me to take the weekend of the 16th off so I can go to GARF.  :(

Youch, it sounds like this month is bad. Of those two weekends, I definitely can't on the weekend of the 16th since that's NHSC.

Eek, I believe I would be strung high from the rafters if I missed Mother's Day weekend. That limits me too.

I may take a solo trip out there, or possibly meet up with Sir Nathan if he's around, get some pictures, report back, and we'll schedule and coordinate for another time. :)

Well, we could always plan for a later date and maybe another place.  I'm open for it...but as others have said, Mother's Day weekend would be akin to placing your neck on Mother's butcher block.  You just don't.  ;)

If folks are going up on the 23rd let me know. Like Ed, the 16th is not tenable.

I was talking to my wife and she said that Mother's Day is in May. And the calendar confirmed it. I'm thinking the 23rd is going to be the weekend I go.

If anyone wants to go on the 23rd, I'll start a list so that I can let the owner know.

That turns out to actually be Easter weekend this year, in case that makes a difference to anyone.

So it is Sir James...Easter is that weekend in question, 4/24 to be exact.  I only know because I checked the calendar to find out exactly when it was.  So, that is Easter weekend.  Not such a huge deal for me...

Oh that's easy, you didn't want us to go w/out you!  Telling us it occurred on Mom's Day would ensure that.  lol

Easter is a Sunday thing for me, so going on Saturday isn't an issue.

So...who is in?  I'd be open to making the trip so long as it isn't just me.  Also, kit or no kit?

I'm lacking a complete kit, so I'll be without kit. :o

If we can coordinate times/travel locations, we can carpool to save some gas. I think I'm more or less on the way through for Sir Edward, and I have enough parking to leave a few cars here at my house if we want to.

Is this a "guys trip" or a "bring the wife/significant others" trip? I want to have a rough head count so I can let the owner know.

Well, my wife won't be coming...her sister's coming to town so they'll be busy and I'll be not busy.  lol

I'll talk to Kat and see what her plans are (which also includes whether or not I can go) :)

I'd be cool with bringing the women along if they're interested in going.

How long of a trip will it be from our area?  I'll see if Meta wants to go...but like I said, w/her sister here who she hasn't seen since last year, it is doubtful.
Title: Re: ModernChivalry trip to Dupont Castle
Post by: Sir Edward on 2011-04-14, 17:13:01

It's about 2 hours from me, so I'm guessing closer 2:30 to 3 from the east side of the beltway.

The "daisy chain carpool" option might be viable. My car is only fit for 2 adult sized humans, but if someone has a higher occupancy vehicle, we could:

Sir William to Sir Edward's (carpool)
Sir Edward's to my place

then could carpool from my place. It's a bit over an hour from my place, so that would save a couple hours of driving for a few of us. I'll request an exact address from him so we can map it out.

That would work for me...where do you live, Sir James?  I'm in Bowie...I don't know how that translates to carpooling but I'm up for the idea.  My car is fit for 4 adult sized humans, myself included...and is rather fast.

I have a jeep that's pretty spacious (sorry for not chirping in earlier, my lords)
And I'd love to go.
And I'd go in kit. But I'll have to check with my workplace if I can have that saturday...you never know...

Also I might bring my Girlfriend. Might.

I'd be willing to carpool but I'd have to be dropped off at a meeting place by my folks, plus my kit is currently incomplete...

My truck seats 4, 2 knights and 2 pages. However I think this group only has knights going. I also do not have a full armored kit ready.

Sir Nathan, please excuse me, I was under the impression you were too young to drive, my bad!  LOL
Title: Re: ModernChivalry trip to Dupont Castle
Post by: SirNathanQ on 2011-04-16, 13:08:40
well I'm sixteen now, and I received my drivers about two weeks ago, so I can drive. However, for 6 months no "non family members" are allowed in the car whilst I'm driving, so once I make it to our "meeting area" someone else might have to take the helm. It's a decent car, and handles well. A good amount of space too. I'll just have to clear it by my folks.

Charles Town, WV. Chargers are quite nice. :D

In West Va, that's a 10 passenger occupancy vehicle. ;)

We could also try to coordinate for the 7th or 14th of May, if there are too many schedule conflicts, or if others want to go that day who can't this week. Just let me know what to pass along, preferably by end of the day tomorrow so I can give him enough notice if we're visiting.

Kat and I can still do it this coming Saturday. I would not be able to do May 7th, but the 14th might be possible. Kat wouldn't be able to join us in May at all though since she's on cast at VARF.

If we are still on for saturday where and when are we meeting up?
Title: Re: ModernChivalry trip to Dupont Castle
Post by: Sir James A on 2011-04-19, 18:42:13
Saturday is still a go for me. I will likely have to drive separate, as I need to leave ~3pm from Dupont, as my brother in law is having his birthday party saturday (and approx 2 1/2-3 hours drive from the castle). My wife may be leaving Friday to help her mom prep food for the party, but my cousin will be coming along with me.

Also - Sir Nathan, you just turned 16 and you already have a 15th century kit?! I thought you were approaching 18! You have a fantastic start. :)

I'm open to meeting points. I am emailing the owner now for an exact address, but I believe my house is literally 1 exit off the highway on the way there from northern virginia.

This is the approximate list I'm sending, just to give him a heads up on possible number of people:

1) Sir James
2) Sir James's cousin
3) Sir Edward
4) Lady Kat
5) Sir William
6) Sir Nathan
7) Sir Ulrich?

I don't have a definite yes or no for Sir William's lady, Sir Nathan's lady, or my lady, so I'm going to add a "potential 3 other ladies" to that list. I'll post more details as I get them.

Sorry for chiming in so late- just where is this Castle? I am on cast in NJ and have a rehersal Saturday but I really am looking forward to us all meeting up somwhere. We are all a bit spread out it seems. It makes me think that we are even a rarer breed as there are so few of us in so many miles...late ponderings.

@Sir Ancelyn - I will pass word along.

@Stormdelver - It is in/near Berkeley Springs, WV.

@All - I got a reply from him, but as he's on a private road, there's no actual address. I am getting directions from him. It looks like 40/68 west to 36 south is the main WV portion of it. I'll provide the exact directions either in person when we meet up or via PM, as I'm not sure if he wants them publicly posted.

He said if we want to bring our kits we can.

He also asked if we could try to arrive by noon. Hopefully that's not too difficult.

Let me know if there is any questions or info you want me to try to find out.

So far so good. So is the plan to meet at your place and caravan over? Or do we want to all just converge on the castle?

I'm up for either way. Since it can't be found by modern GPS and we'll have to use an antique one (a map), I think it would make more sense to all be lost together, or find the right way together.

I think it would make things easier for the owner if we arrived at once, instead of scattered times. That way he won't start showing some of us around, have others arrive and miss the earlier part of the tour, etc. It is their personal residence and not really a "tourist attraction" that's open to the public or has staff to show people around, so I want to make it as painless as possible for them.

LOL @ convoy

As it stands, I don't know if I'll be able to make it.  Seems I'm getting roped into a family gathering I had no intention of attending.  I'd drag'm all w/me but I would not deign to subject my brethren to THAT.

Maybe I can still slip away...what time is the meetup and where?

Tentative plan is to meet at my house about 10:30am. If you're coming this way with Sir Edward, you'll need to coordinate with him on how, since his house is on the way to mine, mostly. :)

Ok.  It is looking like I'm not going to make it...seems the nephews have descended upon my Castle and I may be called to entertain them.  They're good kids but they won't see this as an exciting field trip as there's no guns, or stimpacks or calling in airstrikes.  LOL

The option to give them a couple swords and some mail and tell them to go play in the back yard isn't viable, is it? ;)

My pleasure. It was great to see how a "modern" castle is coming along. Thanks for letting me bum a ride when my car wasn't up for the task.

I wonder...they show minimal interest in my swords and armor but part of that may be because all of it is hands-off for them.  Kinda hard to get excited about something you're not allowed to touch, eh?  Well, they are 15 and 16 so it is high time, but only one of them would be interested I fear- and only if the other one weren't looking.  You know how it is.  At least until the bug bit him good and hard.

I am sorry I missed the trip....I was looking forward to it, but it was actually a blast hanging out with my nephews as well.  I can't wait to see the pics!

Try calling the murder holes "tickle holes" and tell her it's for tickling opponents with really long feathers. I bet it's the "murder" thing she's opposed to. ;)

You know what?  That would make it worse and I'll tell you why...our first cat, Maxx, (an all black beauty) was one of those roamers who always knew how to come home.  When we moved, my wife decided he would be a housecat because 'that gang of ruffians' (read: feral cats) were not about to jump her baby.  Well, he did used to come out on the deck with me when I go for a smoke break so he could still be kinda outside.  Well, one night he was attacked by another black cat and it was dark and I didn't know which one to hit so I'm yelling at the top of my lungs 'get off of my cat!' - Maxx lost a tooth in that battle somehow and I couldn't tell who got the worst of it (he was all hissy for hours afterward)- anyway, all that to say, the kitten holes would be denounced before I even got it out of my mouth good.  LOL

Now, if I were to call them 'mysterious handbag holes' - that might work.
