Yes, that's true. A lot of the armor you can buy these days is overbuilt, so that it can withstand abuse from SCA folks. But it did vary a bit historically, and the later period jousting armors were sometimes pretty crazy.

I think Sir Wolf, now that I think on it, mentioned a live steel group in MD.  I don't know if I'd like to take that up as part of my calling, but I'd love to try it out.
