When I saw the link on AA I read it as '14th Century PATTENS for sale' and got really excited...  then I was disappointed when I caught my error

And now, thanks to my friend google, I know that patten means shoe. :)

pattens are the wooden overshoe that you wear over over your turnshoes.

Or under the turnshoe, as the case may be. There are versions that were essentially wooden blocks strapped to the bottom of the shoe.
