In general I have been taught to not try thrusting...especially not when on your knees and eventually you are going to hit someone in the crotch.

Oh no, don't get into a fight with 13 year SCA fighter Thorsteinn. This will get ugly. If you all really want to know, I have been doing SCA for 0 years and 0 days and 0 hours and 0 minutes and 1 second amd a half, the best thing to do is wear an steel cup... With extra padding. Or if your like me you don't need one  ;)

I absolutely *must* find my copy of this. It's buried in my office somewhere, I'm sure.

Thorsteinn:
KrotchPUNT! Available now from Windrose Armoury.

So just some points via the OP:

I'm in the blue pants in the vid, the next Prince of Cynagua is my opponent.

Crotch strikes are allowed in the SCA and are kills, they aren't encouraged, but they are legal kills (thankfully).

Not thrusting is a highly regional thing. Out here in the West Kingdom it's very much allowed. The reason for it's rise over the past 25 years is due to the change from the old style q-tips to the low profile ones, especially with the recent change in the rules allowing tips to be 3/4" x width of Singlehanded sword with 3/8" progressive give. In other Kingdoms they do not allow thrusts to the side of the helm as kills (dunno why), and so thrusts are are not as used.

In the vid I was aiming for his belly, chin, or hips but the sword/gauntlet/vambrace locked up (I'm working to correct that) so I ended up almost hitting his balls more than once. I've noticed that, because the crotch is frowned upon as a target, folks rarely protect themselves for 6-8 in around the crotch. I get kills lots hitting those places (see below vid).

Belemrys: What I meant by bad technique was "If you don't know how to block a common shot, then you can get hit by said common shot". I've won more than one Tourney fight that way.
