Like aigeletts (those hard metal tips on lacing cord)
I found some nice ones here: http://www.alteryears.com/ (http://www.alteryears.com/)

* The devil is in the details! *

Those are nice! I haven’t seen such detailed ones before. You might also want to check out Fire Mountain Gems (http://www.firemountaingems.com/search.asp?skw=bolo) for simpler pieces or to buy in bulk.

Excellent link Rodney!
Yeah that's the general idea of this post to sort of dump those obscure web site links for the rare and out of the ordinary items. ;)

There's a booth at Pennsic that sells a bunch of those too.. I'm forgetting the name... but it's a large tent that's like a trader's bazaar, and has a little of everything.
-
Thing about the aigeletts posted are they are huge and do not pass through a eyelet easy. The historic Enterprise ends are nice and small and work great.
Gaukler Medieval Wares makes them but they are a bit more pricey ($2 each if I recall) http://www.medievalwares.com/
Armor and castings also has them for $2 each: http://armourandcastings.com/index.php?page=1&_a=viewCat&catId=10
You can go down to your local hobby shop and by brass plates fairly cheap and make them yourself, I have a ton of 22g brass for just this purpose.
-
I have the Historic Enterprises aglets and they pass through the holes on the MRL armor that I have. They seem period appropriate, as I would hope something from HE would. :)
Are the fancy ones period appropriate? I haven't seen them in any artwork, but I've never been nose-deep in it enough to notice.
-
Talk about detail oriented...I never gave these a thought! Anyone got their costrel yet? lol
-
For those interested in mid-15th century garments, I highly recommend the FREE download provided by the Company of Saynt George simply titled Clothing Guide - Men (http://www.companie-of-st-george.ch/cms/?q=en/Clothing_Guide_Download). The amount of detail and documentation is incredible. Laces, points and aiglets are detailed on page 34.
Warning! Do not use modern cotton lace or shoe laces. Aiglets should be a plain cone made of a rolled sheet of brass, no ball at the tip and no teeth along the edge.
-
That being said, I'd still go for the fancy ones that Sir Brian highlighted. Gotta love the bling.
-
What are these used for anyway?
-
To make the ends of your points (strings to attached armour bits, think short shoe laces) easier to thread, reduce unraveling and add a little bling. :)
-
Oh, I'll be needing those then. I'm using waxed leather lacing to do mine up at the moment.
-
I have the plain ones on the Historic Enterprises points. I finished braiding some of them and just need to wax them, then I'll post some pics. They're SO much better than shoelaces. :)
-
I'd like to see...just visited the site and found out how to get them to stay on the ends of the lacings. I take it an arming cotte with reinforced eyelets and laces is what I'll be needing then?

Are you trying to point for plate? My prototype arming coat survived in the field, but quite a few eyelets fell prey to the washing machine. Reinforcing the eyelets is a great idea. When I get a chance to sew up a proper one, instead of hacking up a premade one, I'm going to use the leather tabs for pointing. Depending on the weight of the plate, the eyelets might not hold well on their own.
For the aglets, they get pinched shut, but a drop or two of superglue to hold them (it's hidden once pinched shut) is a good idea. The only points I had done for VARF were for my spaulders, the rest was just leather laces due to lack of time.
-
Yes, for plate. My arm harnesses especially...the legs are held up via c-belt and integrated leather straps w/buckles. Seems to be ok for now but I'd like to point the shoulder cops to something other than my maille. I guess I'm worrying too much...
-
The thing is, if you're wearing spaulders over mail, there's really not much else to attach them to. I think it's correct to point them right to the mail.
-
I was using this harness to point my spaulders only so I can leave myself the option of not having them and not having hanging straps. It worked for a season but was too noticeable when I changed to my newer surcoat style. You are welcome to try it out for awhile if you want since I've permanently pointed my spaulders and besagues to my maille now. ;)

Sir Brian, nicely done...I wouldn't mind having a look at them if it suits you.
-
I'll toss them into my helm box for Saturday. You are still going to MDRF on Saturday right? ???
-
Yes, Sir! Are we all going to show up prior to opening or...a later time?
-
I'm going to do my best to get there prior to the cannon. I intend to don all of my armor except for my great helm, gauntlets and shield and thus minimize the time needed in the parking lot, however I'm not sure if my wife will be ready as early! ;)
-
They fire a cannon?
-
Yeah they do a whole gate opening act with the king and his court and when the opening cannon sounds they open the gates. :)
-
We rarely make gate/cannon. But we can try to push ourselves along a little more quickly when the desire strikes. :) I'd say don't count on my being there before 11, but we'll try to move with some speed in the morning if we can.
-
Since this one is relatively close to me, I may be the first onsite...of the Order I mean, not when they're setting up. Maybe not...depends on how hard I party the Friday before. I think I'd rather see it open than stay til closing...and I may be solo yet again so my arming choices may change to suit that. Why couldn't they make it so you could dress yourself?
Don't answer, it was rhetorical and I know why...because they were too good to dress themselves. LOL
Don't we have squires? Is it part of their membership to assist us knights? Just wondering. :)
-
We need robot squires. So that you don't have to feed them. :)
-
If I fed him, he's my squire? Where's Nathan? lol

As a squire, knight, jester or otherwise - if you need help armoring up I'd be happy to give you a hand. It's the chivalrous thing to do, regardless of title.
-
I was just playing Sir James, but that is good to know. I think we all would in that case....missed you guys on Saturday!
-
AlterYears.com (from the first post) doesn't seem to exist any more
Just updating since I referenced back here for alternative sources of some aglets, ran out making a bunch of points.
-
I've got about a dozen of those things just waiting to be used...I got mine from HE one one of their deal days, decent price.
