Wow! This is even cheaper than when I bought this back in November 2010! Good back up or extra blade for those in need. I just had Paul W. @ MASHS make me an aluminum waster otherwise I would pick another one of these up. :)

What's it going for on there, Sir Brian?

Oh man! Oh man...I just remembered, I have no money at the moment. Sheesh!!! lol

Someday when I'm elected emperor, I'll have to make a social program that assures every able bodied citizen receives a sword. :)

That blade is a screw down tang and not peened. Anyone have any experience with them? Do they rattle apart?

Sometimes after a hard practice session but a couple of turns with an allen wrench and it's good to go.
If it happens to often then I might add a dap of lock-tight next time. ;)

That would be grand! lol
James, I have experience with the H/T swords...they're well built and like Sir Brian said, a turn or two with the allen wrench and all is well. Lock-tite will only serve to make it so that he probably won't have to tighten it again, or not for a while at the least.

Yes I would steer well clear of screwed or bolted tangs. The join between the blade and the stud/bolt, under the quillian, is a weak spot and has a habit of snapping apart :o
Full tang with a hot peened pommel is absolutely the way to go. ;)

I would agree with you, Sir Gerard, if we were talking about swords where the tang's welded on, or at the worst, a threaded rod welded on. However, the Hanwei/Tinker line of swords are hand-forged with a full tang that is drawn down to a softer form of steel than the blade itself to better absorb the shock of contact...the threads are added after the forging process to the end of the tang to accept a sleeved nut. As with all things threaded, there is the possibility of it coming loose- but I can't say its the norm. I put mine under heavy usage, including blade on blade sparring with no ill effects and no rattling. It has come slightly loose during these times but nothing a turn or two of an allen wrench won't fix.
These were made primarily to allow customization- you can switch out practice blunt blades for sharps when transitioning between forms/sparring to cutting exercises, not to mention guards, grips and pommels (so long as the pommel's been channeled for the sleeved nut). Having the ability to purchase JUST the blade (as opposed to a whole sword) is a cost-effective way for some to continue to engage in the sport they love w/out breaking the bank.
Of course, I'll allow that the full tang hot peen is the safest and strongest way to go, but the H/T swords offer something those peened ones do not so in the end, personal preference will out.

The Hanwei Tinker swords are fine, and are a great bargain for the price. They're sturdy enough for general training, and they approximate the handling of a historical sword pretty well. They get chewed up a little faster than a higher end sword, but they're great as loaner swords or as something to start with if you aren't 100% certain you're going to stick with training over the years.
Keep in mind that these are not stage combat swords, nor are they reenactment swords. They are designed for martial arts practice. I suspect if you use them for the former, they will probably not last as long.
-
The only complaint I have about mine was the leather wrap was a bit on the shoddy side but some liberally applied superglue remedied that no problem and since everything is so easily disassembled I will probably end up rewrapping the handle anyways. ;)

How does the Hanwei Practical Hand and a Half Sword - 5th Generation - SH2106 (http://www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SH2106&name=Hanwei+Practical+Hand+and+a+Half+Sword+%2D+5th+Generation) compare to the Tinker Pearce Blunt Trainer Longsword - SH2395 (http://www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SH2395&name=Tinker+Pearce+Blunt+Trainer+Longsword) as a training weapon? With the current sale they're similar in price. I know that I could use either in my current longsword class, but if I were to also participate in SCA fencing only the Practical Hand and a Half has been approved for use.
-
The Hanwei Practicals feature a thick blunt edge that makes it ideal for SCA and re-enactor usage; as Bill said, the H/Ts aren't built for stage or re-enactment but more for light sparring and forms work. The added plus being that the sharp and blunt versions of the sword are built to be 'twins', that is, it should feel relatively the same when using either the sharp or blunt.
-
The Tinker is a real longsword in terms of size and balance.
The Hanwei hand-and-a-half is really not a longsword. It's more like a single-hand sword with a larger hilt (and I use it as my single-hand trainer).

I just submitted my order. Thanks to everyone for your input. I really can't go wrong at this price, $111 for a Tinker designed training longsword! :)

UPS tells me it will be here by Thursday! I can't wait. :) :) :)

If you'd gotten it from SwordNation, you could've gotten two for the price of one...they're still running that special for the month of February.

Got it! This was my first transaction with Kult of Athena (KOA) and I was very pleased. The sword arrived exactly as advertised and well packaged having been double-boxed with foam inserts fully suspending the sword. I chose KOA as they have been very favorably reviewed on other sites and they actually ship from their own warehouse in Chicagoland after they've inspected the piece. This is not done by most resellers / drop-shippers.
-
Awesome, congratulations! I hear you on the inspection portion...Rich ships what he has when he can but he dropships on occasion- good thing is, if there's a problem he's right on it, no need to hunt him down or listen to a sob story about why you got a defective part.

Thank you for the information regarding Rich / Sword Nation. I will keep him in mind when making my next purchase. A fine example of positive word-of-mouth in action!

Yeah, I've been happy with KOA on every purchase I've made from them. The prices are good, the selection is good, and the service is good.
-
Sweet blade isn't? Congratulations on your purchase and KOA does have top notch service! :)

I’ll have to wait until I get home to try the blade. I manage office buildings in downtown Minneapolis and my tenants would think I've really "lost it" this time. (Either that or we're trying out a new rent collection initiative ;))
-
LOL @ rent collection initiative
Tell you what...if that were to ever come into play, I doubt there'd be many who would require that service performed on them.
You: "I'm here to collect overdue fees for your domicile."
Deadbeat: "I'll have it for you next week, I swear it!"
You: "I am sure, however, it is due NOW, or rather, is overdue now. We will consider taking your firstborn son as surety if you wish."
Deadbeat: "I don't have any sons."
You: "That is too bad. You are hereby charged with delinquency toward your overlord, how do you plead?"
Deadbeat: "I don't have any money- you cannot squeeze blood from a stone!"
**sound of a sword being freed from its scabbard, followed by the hiss of air as it slides over the blade and the satisfying thunk of a well landed blow**
You: "Perhaps not from a stone...but certainly from the likes of you. God, I love my job!"
lol

I just got a sharp-long-n-pointy from KOA earlier this week. Same double-boxing and suspended with styrofoam packaging. It was my first purchase from them.

i love koa

Actually considering getting the Norman Tinker sword, just not sure of the quality or if I should save up for a del tin.

New trainer longsword + typical MN cold outside + low basement ceiling inside = repairs to ceiling grid in the morning. :o :'(
-
lol! The sign of a dedicated student of the sword! I've got a few of those in my ceiling...of course I also put one
in Sir Andrews ceiling about a year ago when he let me check out his claymore! :D

Split the arm of a couch open once. The ladywife WAS NOT pleased.
-
LOL
I accidentally slashed a lower part of the couch arm and am just waiting for my wife to notice it. It was a slash rather than a rip- maybe I could blame it on the cat?
