Title: GDFB Klapvisor Helm
Post by: Sir Brian on 2010-09-08, 16:29:56
Made a new purchase yesterday!
http://www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=AB0427&name=Klappvisier+Bascinet+Helmet

I haven’t had much luck finding a decently priced aventail for it though. I was kicking around the idea of a scale aventail but that would be even harder to find. Anyone have any long lost links to a possible source?  :-\

I found this:
http://www.casiberia.com/prod_Detail.aspx?id=AB2735
But they appear to be wholesale only and out of stock to boot.  :(

There ya go, that should work with it as it's made by GDFB as well.

Excellent! Thank you kindly good Sir!  :)

ask KOA about the item. they carry GDFB so it maybe an issue of just not having one yet or on the website.

No worries, I went ahead and ordered the one from Therionarms. It's decently priced and although I would love a rivetted aventail from GDFB they are a little bit more than I am willing to spend on it.  ;)

Very cool! Can't wait to see how your kit turns out with the changes. :)

Well the next time we're at MDRF you might be able to pry my secret plans for that Klappvisor out of me if you steep me with enough Boston lager!  :D

I saw you with this on!!! You were kitted out as a Teutonic Knight...that helm caught my eye almost immediately.  I mistook it for an Armstreet offering at first, I know.  Sorry!

No you were correct about the helm I was wearing when we met Paladin, it is a visored sugarloaf helm from Armstreet. The Klappvisor I was referring to is due in a week or so. - I'm looking for a replacement for my great helm that I typically wear like my profile picture.  ;)
Title: Re: GDFB Klapvisor Helm
Post by: Sir Brian on 2010-09-14, 11:32:31
Well I received the helm yesterday but I think I'm going to send it back and exchange it for this helm instead. http://kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=AB2971&name=Great+Fighting+Bascinet (http://kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=AB2971&name=Great+Fighting+Bascinet)
for two reasons;
1.) I ordered the Klappvisor in a medium and it is a tad small. I could get by without wearing an arming cap but that would soon make the irremovable liner exceptionally nasty in no time at all!  :P

2.) I was not very confident of being able to develop an inconspicuous method of ensuring the visor would stay in both the up and down position as needed. I may have the same issue with the other bascinet but I think it would be more workable.  :-\
Title: Re: GDFB Klapvisor Helm

what about a thin linen coif? unpadded.

you will have an issue with a lot of visored helms that won't stand up on their own. sometimes I suggest to people about putting leather washers in the pivot points and riveting them. but the klap has a different arrangement.

Well another aspect of the helm being too small is my prominent chin is pressed against the visor when it is down and secured as it would have to be via a strap or some such. I will probably end up making a thin linen coif in time but I’ll have to check the fit of the other helm first. I’m hoping a dual hinge pointed visor will be easier to modify in order to secure it.  :-\

Ah ok...its a beauty it is; klappvisor's an impressive helm as well.  Interested to see how you work that visor...

Sounds good to me! After faire season and your new addition is settled in of course.  ;)
Title: Re: GDFB Klapvisor Helm
Post by: Sir Edward on 2010-09-14, 15:30:34

Yeah, not all of the visors stay up on their own. I don't think GDFB makes that a priority. My sallet wouldn't stay up at all, nor would it lock down for combat, so Allan was kind enough to add spring pins to lock it in both places. A very elegant solution!
Title: Re: GDFB Klapvisor Helm
Post by: Sir Brian on 2010-09-14, 19:39:15
That is probably the way I'll have to go. Do you mind posting a couple of close up shots to give me a rough idea of how and where to consider adding a spring pin or two?  :-\
Title: Re: GDFB Klapvisor Helm
Post by: Sir Wolf on 2010-09-15, 15:44:28
a lot of bassenets also had a strap that went around the back of the helm and buckled to itself on the other side.

but a spring pin can be made from 3 rivets and a hacksaw blade too

Yep, I should be able to take some pictures. I'll try to remember to do that tonight.

Yeah I have the straps and buckles for that and will go that route as a last resort if I can't make a simpler
method work, but you certainly have piqued my curiosity about making the spring pin!  :)

Update:

I called KOA and they’ll refund me for the return Klappvisor (I had no doubts that they would). Since I don’t know how long their sale is running for I opted to purchase the Great Bascinet outright and have the
Cost of the Klappvisor deducted from my balance when they have a reasonable time to get to it.

Here is the NEW new helm! ;)

Well I got my new bascinet and I like this one much more. Not only does it fit better but the visor stays up and has a locking spring pin. All in all a well made bascinet.  ;D

great looking helm man, can't wait to see it with the aventail attached
Title: Re: GDFB Klapvisor Helm

Now I'm just waiting for the aventail to be delivered from Therionarms.

I was contemplating on getting some scales and adding them to the aventail for a more unique look.
I think that was sometimes done in period but I'm not positive. Can anyone offer up any verification? :-\

UPDATE:
Ah found that someone has already done some research on the subject! Scale aventail is looking like a very good probability now! ;)

you know how some people have dags at the end of their COP or under their soup can knees? i think it would look cool around the top edge of the aventail.  you see so many with just the leather straight edge, that some flair maybe neat

hmm, that would look kinda cool. The aventail would need some re-work but it's a possibility! :)

just get a piece of leather and lay over the existing leather part. that way the existing leather can hold the mail but the new piece can be shown all nice like. it would be in layers and know one would ever know. they also sell golden ink fabric markers that you could do some sort of trim on the edges. sort of how I did the design on my masks: http://www.angelfire.com/biz/dragonfirearmoury/images/mask3.JPG  man now i wanna try it ahhahaha.

Great idea on the paint pens! I have a silver one that I used for some minor details on the R2 droid. Didn't think to use one on leather.

Yes sir, that is correct!  They've blocked ALL of the good sites- Albion, DSA, BKS, Tinker, CF just to name a few.  But somehow, somewhere someone is surfing porn sites and getting away with it!

I wonder if they've blocked Coral Cache. You can go through this caching proxy by adding ".nyud.net" to the end of the domain name in any URL. Info here:

Sir Brian, I'm not sure if it was this thread or another one but you mentioned retiring your sugarloaf helm...let me know if you really mean that, maybe I can take it off your hands- if you're up for it, that is.

Really? - I wouldn't ask more than $115.00 seeing as you can pick up a nice GDFB helm from KOA
for a little more than that. My homemade liner isn't the best but it is removable and washable.
You might also want to make a better method of securing the visor when it is up.
…I am ashamed to specify how I have it now as Sir Wolf and Sir Andrew would ridicule me to no end!  ;)

I can bring it with me the next time you go to the faire if you let me know a day or two before.  ;)

I finally got a response from TherionArms with an update to my aventail...it is suppose to be in some time this month. Just as well since I have a new shield to paint...which I am waiting for the new stencils to arrive!  :(

So yours (and by extension the KoA ones) came w/out a liner?

No the KoA (GDFB) bascinets all come with a very nice liner. My visored sugarloaf helm that I was wearing when we first met is from Armstreet and was unlined.  ;)

well do we have the aventail on yet? please post pictures!!

I am really thinking about this helmet. can you give me the internal measurements? was there more than one size?
Title: Re: GDFB Klapvisor Helm
Post by: Sir Brian on 2010-10-30, 14:19:52
Sorry but no aventail yet!  :(

I think it only comes in one size. It fits me nice and snug with a padded arming cap on and my bare head measures an even 23" if that helps.   ;)
Title: Re: GDFB Klapvisor Helm
Post by: Sir Wolf on 2010-10-30, 14:56:58
ok great. my head is a lil larger than yours so i could just thin out the arming coif
