Oh you know they would have done that back in the day if they had them. :)
BTW, the picture with my and the barbarian/viking/whatever guy, and the one with me and the templar guy--- that's the same guy.

Just returned from the GARF where we got to hang around with our new
friends from the NCRF a couple of weeks ago and is consequently our newest
forum member: Dragonlover! We had a fantastic time. The weather was warm and
mostly dry on Saturday but a bit cooler and rainy on Sunday. Saturday was a decent
day for armor...just have to remember not to stand under any rain laden trees when
their are trolls about! :D Here are some picts.
Rosemary in a garden.

Of course we had to get our picture with the “roaming gnome”.

Excellent! Looks like you guys had a great time. I've never made it out to GARF, but I'd like to see it eventually. So far my driving radius has been < 6 hours, except for Texas and Colorado.
VARF is coming up soon. Note to self-- take lots of pictures.
-
ya maybe i can make the VARF. stay with the wife's grandparents etc. :)
-
Good morrow...
This is my first post here....a couple of you know me already.
Thought this would be a decent place to start.
My wife (Jeanie),son (Evan) & I were members of VARF for a few years in HM court. We portrayed the Fitzwilliams, (Sir William, Lady Anne (Sidney) and young Master William). We were even there for the year of the mud (2003). Haven't done many faires as patrons, but did manage to get to Carolina RF last Fall....(got a pic or two of Sir Brian & Lady).
So I'll try and post a few pics from then & now....
Cheers

CRF 2007....
-
Hail and well met good sir! Welcome to the forum and thank you kindly for posting some pictures!
Do you venture north to the MDRF by chance? If so perhaps we can all arrange a date and
time for us all to met and lift a tankard or two...or three...maybe four if it is cold enough...warm
enough...cloudy enough...sunny enough, etc.
Suffice to say we shall consume a drink or several. ;)
Again welcome!
:)
-
Thank you Sir Brian....
We have not been to MDRF in years.....though talk of a re-visit has arose from time to time.
Cheers,
-
Hey, "stranger". :) Good to see you here!
-
Welcome to the forum! I remember the mud at VARF... I was a vendor during the weekends in Fredericksburg when the faire didn't open due to the mud hazard. Wow, that was bad. I think "the year of the mud" was the following year.
Here's some pics of our booth in 2002:
(http://necrobones.com/armory/pictures/816.jpg) (http://necrobones.com/armory/pictures/818.jpg)
Those shots are from before the rain storms. The following weekend you can see all of the hay/straw that was put out to cover the mud:
-
Yes....2003 was the Ladysmith location season....what a mess but what fun too.....it rained for something like 5 week-ends straight.....
-
Yeah, I remember that. I wonder how much stuff (shoes, watches, coins, etc) might have been permanently lost in the mud that year. Boy, the faire had a rough start those first few years.
-

Kind of a funny story to go with that....
Once as a GP for Her Majesty (Jen)... we (court) were strolling around the village when she suddenly stopped and whispered....."my shoe is gone" ...we started looking back and she said..."no..it's gone, gone"..the mud sucked it right off her foot and we never found it!...had to kinda carry her back to the grove......
Cheers,
-
Haha, yeah I think I remember hearing about that actually. My girlfriend is on cast, so I sometimes get some interesting stories. :)
-
Oh, to continue this thread's theme, here are my photos from TRF in 2006, that I posted in another thread, but is more appropriate here:

I don't have many pictures from the renfaires in the 90's (and probably none from the 80's), but here's some from the VA faire in 1998:

Man, the blue in my leather doublet was still bright back then!

-
In some of those pics, you look like you were half the man you are now. Alas, that is probably true for many of us with pics 10 years old or so.
-
Yes, that was about 25-35 pounds ago. :)
At least the doublet still fits. :)
-
And it's not even made of spandex. Good on you. :D

Well Rosemary and I had a great time at the Great Lakes Medieval Fair in Ohio
this past weekend. Here is a link to some of the pics.
http://s221.photobucket.com/albums/dd251/Tah908/GLMF/
We met so many nice people that we both reconsidered our opinions of last year
when we considered the patrons of the fair to be a bit stand-offish because that
certainly wasn't the case this year. There were a bunch of guys in armor and quite a
few of us got together at one of the pubs. A good time was had by all and the weather
was perfect. It did get a bit toasty on Sunday and I greatly appreciated the new riveted
aluminum mail because it was so much lighter and cooler!
Hope you all like the picts! The Sterling, NY fair opens this weekend and we will be going
on the 19th & 20th. ;D
-
Hey, great pictures! Glad to hear the new mail is working out well.
I don't think we're going to make it to Sterling this year. We did talk about Tux though, but I'm not sure on that one yet either, especially with our Pennsic trip coming up. We'll be hitting PARF on a specific day later in September (need to check the date, it has to do with some friends getting married).
-
what fun pics sir Brian!
hey.... look at me. below the 200 lb mark ;) and some of those I'm fur-less! well on my face at least... oh the shame!! hehehe look at that beautiful mullet! Joe Dirt eat your heart out.

Yeah, those VARF pics from many years ago show us both in quite a different light. :)
Oh, check out the "collage" sort of thing I stuck on the front page. Probably could be better, but I threw it together pretty quickly: http://modernchivalry.org/ (http://modernchivalry.org/)

It looks like you had a white surcoat on one of those days. Sort of a change of pace? Looks good!
-
Yes! I purchased a Teutonic surcoat at the end of last fair season to wear as a prop for a charity
event. I decided to wear it that day so I could give my original helm some fresh air and it also
gave me an opportunity to carry my warhammer ( I know it is a little out of period, but I read
somewhere that the Teutonic knights favored hammers…or was that they liked to get hammered? – i.e. BEER!) ;)
-
Very cool. I've been tempted to put together a Teutonic surcoat for years. I started working towards a Templar sort of thing (I have red cross appliqués that I never attached to my plain white surcoat, and also I have a metal shield with a red cross), but you don't see a lot of people doing Teutonic stuff, and it's probably closer to my actual bloodline/descent anyway. Never got around to it though.
-
I came across a picture of you and Kat Sir Edward...
both of you looking good as usual! :)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/asmalin911/2581858913/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/asmalin911/2581858913/)
-
Hah, very cool. It's always interesting to see those candid shots that people take. That shot must have been in a fairly narrow time-frame, since I was only carrying that brown paper bag inside my helmet for about 20 minutes that day. :)
-
Sir Brian,
I really like the Teutonic kit! I think you should go with a slightly different helmet, though... a barrel helmet, or a sugarloaf without the visor, seem more appropriate. (But that's just me trying to get other people to buy cool new stuff, as usual. :) )
-
Bill,
Thanks! I know the helm isn't really quite right but it is a nice change from always wearing
an enclosed helm. Besides, I figured it could be considered as one of those evolutionary dead
ends for helms during the transitional period. ;)
Having said that I of course will always be on the lookout for better! After all I have to catch
up with all you good sirs! ;D
-
Hah, and I'm still trying to catch up with you with getting my charges painted up. :)
The good news is that, unlike the Templars, the Teutonic knights continued to exist for quite some time, and probably would have had a substantial range of equipment over the years.
-
Here are some pics of the Sterling Ren Faire we went to last weekend with a good friend
of ours.~ I'm the lucky guy who got to escort the two lovely ladies...er, Fairies. ;D
http://s221.photobucket.com/albums/dd251/Tah908/Sterling%20RF/ (http://s221.photobucket.com/albums/dd251/Tah908/Sterling%20RF/)
All in all it was a very nice fair, which we will definitely visit again next year.
The food and beer was great and the people were friendly and the entertainment was fantastic,
most especially the "Flying Freak Show" - Very funny.
The only negative I would say was the prices of the merchandise.
Saturday was pretty toasty so no armor and Sunday was frequent rain showers which
turned the parking field into a quagmire, hence me not wearing all of my harness…I didn’t
feel like spending several days chasing after all the rust! What armor I did wear was well
received since I hadn’t seen anyone except the jousting troop wearing armor the entire weekend
and they didn't mingle or interact with the patrons. :-\
At one time I picked up a hitch hiker, a moth liked my torse so much it stayed on it for over an hour…
I figured he/she/it couldn’t eat that much!
Another note of interest we learned from some of the local regulars is that faire was under new ownership
which allowed weapons for the first time in like 17 years, so they were happy about that.

Oh, and I'm sure you hated every minute of it! :) I'm glad to see you had a good time! I liked Sterling. I only went once, but it seemed like a nice faire.

Music to my ears!!! We need more "can-carry" faires.
-
My wife and I are heading up to the Sterling faire next Saturday. From there, we'll be heading to Pennsic.
I haven't been to Sterling in years, so I'm really curious about how things are there now.
CHT
-
Well your harness will definately be a hit if you elect to wear it there!
I hope you have as good a time as we all did!
;D
-
We're probably not going to make it to Sterling this year. But we're also heading to Pennsic that weekend. Maybe we'll cross paths somewhere. :) We haven't planned out our activities or anything. Probably play it by ear. I do want to find some time to make it out to the archery range and try out my crossbow. It's been collecting dust for two years.
-
Yes! I get to make the first post with '08 MDRF pictures! ;)
Here are some pictures of opening day.

It was warm but a lot of fun and a very great honor and pleasure
to finally meet Sir Wolf in person! :)
-
yes yes it was great to meet you and your wife and friend (sorry not good with names ;) your kit was awesome :) now i've gotta spend all week getting the rust off my mail ehhehe
-
Well, I got my shots put up as well... they're on my 2008 faire photos page (http://ed.toton.org/cgi-bin/gallery.pl?year=2008&gallery=faire), with a couple of my armor close-ups on my 2008 arms & armor photos page (http://ed.toton.org/cgi-bin/gallery.pl?year=2008&gallery=weapons).

Here are some pics of MDRF week # 2. Please take note pictures of our very
own dragonlover in the steel and samurai armor, which was a real big hit with
the crowd! :)
Also Sir Ed's shield turned out fantastic! - Well done Sir Ed! Sunday was a pretty
crazy day for photo ops but a lot of fun none the less. :)

I liked the one of the matching mother/daughter/doll outfits.
-
Yes that was soooo adorable. She carried herself as a real lady as well, very
dignified beyond her years. :)
-
man who are all those peoples in those pictures?
-
Excellent photos, Sir Brian!
I've posted pictures into my 2008 faire photos page:

enjoy!
-
Well, the sign seems appropriate since Kat introduced me to a bee sting. :)
-
Haha, true. So... did you like it? I've always thought Bee Stings were pretty good.
(for those who don't know, it's 50% meade and 50% cider)

Crap, it looks like I was still repositioning.
I really loved that. We should have done the Dr. Evil thing with the pinky fingers. :)

Really! That would have been hysterical, but I don't think the kid's parents would have wanted their
kids pictured like that...and we also didn't think of it until after they had already left! :-[
