If anyone is interested in making your own helm liner here are a couple of sites
that gave me a general working idea of making my own liners. The first picture is
my visored sugarloaf helm and the second picture is my great helm. I needed to
make it substantially thicker as the helm’s inner dimensions was a bit bigger than
my first helm. A great thing about this design is you can very easily remove or
add as much padding as you want before sewing it up closed. I of course cheated
by using velcro to secure the liner to the helm itself, which makes it really
convenient if you need to wash the liner.

btw, what isn't pictured in the second picture is the round "pillow" I made that I
put in the center.

Excellent! That looks great, thanks for posting this.
I really do need to think about doing something like that. I've just been using foam padding taped and glued inside the helms. No one knows when I'm wearing it of course, but I'd love to have something better like this.
-
very nice. we need to get you some rivets to get rid of those dangerous bolts ;)
-
Very observant Sir Wolf! Actually they are anodized aluminum rivets that
I threaded to take a nut instead of permanently hammering them on.
I chose to go with that option because my chin strap is nothing more than
a leather dog collar! :-[
I hope to get a couple of straps made at the next fair then I'll permanently
mount the chin strap in.
Good catch!
;)

Do your helms wiggle at all, Sir Brian? Probably not...those pillows look mighty thick. I wish you had a step by step tutorial, like how'd you do the cutouts, how you stuffed, how you sewed it, etc etc.

This is the tutorial I used to make my liner. It was a breeze.

EDIT: Just realized Sir Brian already posted this link.

And of course its blocked. I'll take a look from home...I have a couple helms in need of additional padding. Those spider-strap liners are not period I take it.
-
Did you pad the spot where your nose is because if for some reason you got bashed in the face nose + steel would not feel very nice lol
-
No. Its hot/confined enough in there as it is!
-
Yes I actually had to make a separate nose guard pillow that was narrow enough to fit between the eye slots and it has the added benefit of soaking up all the sweat that drips down my nose! ;)
-
Hmm I see, and all you used was linnen material, stuffing, and velcro strips
-
And a sewing machine. ;)
-
Will have to get some help with a sewing machine lol
-
Nicely done, Sir Brian. That liner looks so white and clean. Is it new?
-
Lol, well it was pretty new when I originally made it and posted this thread! ;)

Now it isn't so white and clean looking! - I'm happy to just keep ahead of the stench! :D

This is also the time of year to bother those you know with horses to get the horse hair you need to make a suspension liner if you want one.
