Title: So much SNOW!(sorry for caps, but it's true)
Post by: Sir Nate on 2014-01-22, 03:54:58
Anyone else from Tennessee to Maine getting a lot of snow. Here in pay it's over a foot already and is not supposed to stop until 12 to 1 in the morning. Let's not forget the temp of 6 degrees and wind chills at 40mph that are below zero.
Fun...

I feel for you guys and gals in states that aren’t used to this stuff.  Nearly everyone I know has a four wheel drive vehicle, and half of those have a plow mounted.

Highway echelon plowing, low and slow driving, and ‘blowing out your neighbor’s driveway are a regular part of life here.  Many states are simply not equipped to handle snows like this, nor would it financially responsible for them to have a ‘plow fleet the likes of MN, ND, SD, WI or MI on standby “just in case”.

Hang tough, stay warm, learn to snow shoe.  It’s a lot of fun and great exercise!   :)

It's been snowing very often around here this year, but it stays a while, melts, then comes back again. I think the most snow accumulation I've ever seen at one time was back in 2010, though. I don't think I've ever seen that much snow. Going out into the backyard was like stepping into the Allied trenches at Bastogne...except with fewer Germans. Crazy.

Nevertheless, stay safe and stay frosty...erm...toasty! :)

Ya a lot of shoveling. Gotta a fire, got warm food. No school. The snow has toned down, watching survivor man. Guess I'll pack it in soon.
Stay warm all who are suffering from this, or enjoying it.
P.s. Is mead supposed to be served warm?

I grew up in Maine where snowmobiles, snow shoes and cross country skis are considered 'normal' modes of transportation and trust me, it is loads of fun when you are going full throttle on a snowmobile across a frozen pond or lake! ;)

Meanwhile, out West....

Can someone out there send us some snow? We could use it. We're at 1/3rd our normal snowpack in the mountains. :(

And they still want to run a Winter Olympics out of Lake Tahoe/Reno Metro/ Carson City-Minden-Gardnerville/ Sacramento Metro area.

Couple inches here!  We usually don't get any accumulation in southern VA, so that's kinda cool.

Is it Unusual that I find the man on the very right seems to have a strange resemblance to Bill Murray.

Until you hit the unmarked ice pile that a fisherman left in your path.

Been there, done that, have the stained snow pants…   :D

Yeah those incidents can be pretty bad, but they are even worse for the folks getting towed behind you in a toboggan! ;)

Ian -

Sir Brian and Sir Edward can confirm we got little more in the greater DC area - yet my girls were inexplicably out of school AGAIN for a third day today - while I had to go to work.   :(

Oh well, be thankful always for gainful employment, I suppose.  Still, one would be more fond if we were off to the lists... :)

I did manage a day off of work.  They only had essential personnel report in the greater Hampton Roads area since most of the secondary streets here were iced over.  I had to go in today on a two hour delay.  So I'm not complaining! :)

Yeah, they closed our offices for two days. We were still on the hook to do work remotely, but often that becomes a sort of half-day for us. Usually the work load is diminished a bit just because it takes longer for people to communicate when they're not in the same building.

Yeah the shut down the Shipyard on Tuesday and had a two hour delay on Wednesday but today was back to a full day of trying to keep everything on the waterfront heated enough so the pipes wouldn't freeze and getting the steel warm enough to paint. - Basically threw all our delivery schedules out of whack. Next week is going to be hell!  :-\

They closed schools the Twin Cities again today.  Kids who live within 2 miles of their school are expected to walk, so -36 F wind-chill is just too cold.

Tomorrow morning when I wake, it's supposed to be 5 or 4 degrees. Probably feel like -11 and god knows what the wind chill will be like.
But it's supposed to be in the thirtys next week.

Pffft, not only did I get no time off, it's so cold in the garage the lights won't come on half the time and I can barely stand 15-20 minutes of work before I feel like an icicle.

I am from Florida...it is weird to see my own breath in my car...while driving...and typing with my left hand is hard because of how cold it got...

You need one of these:

When I was building my R2, one of the local R2 guys had weekly "build nights", and his garage would get pretty cold during the winter too. He had one of these "jet" like propane heaters, and it got warm in a jiffy!

Winter storm Yankee. When it's done with you west coasters you'll never have eaten so much cheesesteaks, egg bagels, and folded pizza. Don't forget all the delis. Mwahahahahahaha
