I would have left off the fictional characters. I'm surprised Robert the Bruce didn't make the cut, or Geoffrey de Chargny (sp?). What about Hugh de Paen?

Honestly I think it's a mistake to mix real & fictional on this list - should be separate in my view.  And fully agree that de Charny should be on the "real" list.

At least not if you're calling it European history; they should do two different lists.  Then there's the whole Nine Worthies discussion.

Agreed on the fictional vs historical meshing. Opens up a whole other world of literally impossible people.

Yes; although one could argue that Nine Worthies portray the utmost in chivalric and knightly virtues - that some of those chosen are from fiction rather than history will serve to underscore the point.  Since William Marshal isn't considered one, I'm thinking Arthur should be replaced by him.  Such is my thought on the matter, in any case.
