Hello.
Has anybody noticed a close affinity between the Boy Scouts Law and the knightâs code? Twelve points in each and they overlap to a great extent. Accident or design?
A Scout is
Trustworthy,
Loyal,
Helpful,
Friendly,
Courteous,
Kind,
Obedient,
Cheerful,
Thrifty,
Brave,
Clean, and
Reverent.
Order Code:
Truth
Honor
Justice
Valor
Strength
Generosity
Loyalty
Humility

By design. Sir Baden Powell (and his U.S. admirers) looked at several historical examples for inspiration on the core values to instill and encourage in young men - including not only the knight's code but also the oath taken by young Athenians.

Many of them are characteristics of simply being a good person, and will have overlap in other things as well. I was a boy scout as a child, but haven't been for 20 or so years now.

Yep, definitely by design. I was reading something about that not too long ago.

Thanks for the response.
I agree it was by design. I have been a scout or adult scout leader for over 45 year, give or take. I have always been in awe of B-P insight into the minds of young boys and his ability to take a program/manual created at first for military scouts and convert it into a movement for youth. I agree that they are traits of being a good person but sometimes I think our modern society views them as old-fashioned or even archaic.

Timothy, it is just like being a gentlemen, now and days people see it as a flirtatious act. It is also that people are not being raised wih these rules and beliefs (or not as many) because we are no longer tought that way. And youth these days can be exposed to stuff that they shouldnt be exposed to till they are at least 18. Which gives them an early rude attitude. Like I havn't played grand theft auto yet which contains sexual content and stronge language, and i heard kid younger than 9 talking about it, and how we can't wait to get back on it. I think it comes down to the internet and parents that let people not be "chivalres" and honestly it shouldnt just be knights but all should really be like the boy scouts and knights.

Sir Aiden, Agree.

I actually have a patch for Western Martial Arts a local troup gave the SCA when we did a demo up in Dog Valley a while back.

They have a patch for WMA/HEMA now? Cool. Is that a merit badge?
Must admit will always have a soft spot in my heart for Scouting (yep, Eagle here).
Unfortunately, unlike Sir Wolf, my female-only progeny limits my present options, but I regualrly take them camping :)

Mine was given out to the local SCA chapter for helping out at that event. IIRC it was a one time thing.

When I was in the Marine Corps, my fellow Marines would always say that the Marines were like modern-day Spartans....a bold thought, no doubt, but I always considered Marines to be modern day KNIGHTS. Along with the USMC core values - Honor, Courage and Commitment, everything else on the code you have in this group could be applied to being a Marine. Or any branch of the service. And even if you're not in the service these values apply to anyone who hols themselves to the highest level of personal standard and conduct.
Anyone agree?
-
Absolutely. In fact, you could argue I think one basic criteria of comparison is what groups are even willing to adhere to any kind of code today - to place it above themselves, even at personal peril? Increasingly a rare thing these days.

There is only 1 answer to this.
All cubs scouts are being secretly trained in our ways.

Sir Nate,
We can only hope that is true.
