Age of Empires- man does that bring back some good times memories!  Countless hours spent building, loved how you could alter a good many factors to tailor the experience.

The HD remake looks nice, fire is animated much nicer, battles look better... I may give it a go, even though I still have a few games on the shelf I haven't played.

OK, now here's a game I can say is pretty awesome so far.  Totally old-school CRPG, with turn-based combat and awesome narrative.  Shadowrun Returns.  It's a kickstarter of the old school shadowrun games.  Basically think fantasy races (humans, elves, dwarves, orks, trolls), but in a cyberpunk sci-fi setting with magic and hi-tech!

There's a campaign with it, and a full editor as well with tons of user created content.

I think I graduated from that...this is my current home PC background:

And my work PC has the interior of the 2013 Dodge Charger Daytona edition as the background.

There's a widescreen hack for it to run on "modern" PCs. I run it on my dual core machine, 1920x1200, no problems.

Steam sale this weekend on the Witcher franchise.

Witcher 2 Enhanced edition is only $5, that's the best money for value on a game ever!

By far the best traditional CRPG in the last decade, better than Dragon Age Origins (and that's saying a lot), and a hell of a lot better than the abomination console port DA 2.  You don't have to have played Witcher 1 to jump in to Witcher 2 either.

The combat in Witcher 2 is markedly different from Witcher 1, but the regardless, the story is so much better than any other modern rpg, and it's very adult.  Not all happy fantasy...

Cool, I'll grab it. No idea when I'll get to playing it though. I'm still in DA:O right now.

Dragon Age: Origins was a really well done RPG, even on console.  The combat was kind of simplified but the story...the story was engrossing; so much so I played it through fully twice just to see what sort of differences I could make between the two run throughs.

FWIW, I enjoyed DA2 despite it being RPG-lite (you couldn't determine much about your character except for what class and gender they could be; if I may, this is one of the few games where being the Mage was actually the BEST choice- really cool melee attacks with what looks like a cross between a wizard's staff and a glaive); but the voice acting's top notch and the way the story is laid out was pretty interesting too.  I'm usually not a fan of dwarves, but there's one in particular that I took a liking too- the type of guy you could hang out and hoist a few with.

So how different was DA2 from DA:O in terms of the gameplay? No real customization? That worries me. Part of the fun in these games is having control over your own character, so that you make the story your own.

I'm enjoying DA:O very much right now. Is DA2 worth skipping, or worth playing to fill in the story before DA3 comes out?

DA:O was much better than DA2. Just my opinion. Better story lines & easier play. I enjoyed it. :)

I loved DA:O, I've tried to play DA2 twice with a year separated and can't get through it because of loss of interest.  It's very 'arcadey'

Here's a trailer for the Witcher 3, it says a lot about the kind of world that you get to live in in the Witcher games, it's unforgiving, gritty, and not kid-friendly... :)  it's awesome

And here's a screenshot from gameplay of the Witcher 2, how many modern fantasy games do you see sallets, barbutes, and breastplates with plackerts,  with maille voiders :)

I'm really digging that armor. The painted sallet is particularly interesting to see in an actual game too!

Something that made me chuckle in DA:O last night:  In Denerim city, there's an armorer named Wade, who got in trouble for (and nearly lost his business because of) not fulfilling his orders in a timely fashion, with one egregious case of taking over three years. Heh, it made me wonder if some of the developers are in the historical community. Armorers taking too long? Nah, never happens! lol  :)

Curious about the DA2 differences, I've been looking at some reviews and videos of gameplay. Interesting:

http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/31/the-controversial-unbalanced-narrative-of-dragon-age-2/ (http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/31/the-controversial-unbalanced-narrative-of-dragon-age-2/)

It looks like it could still be fun, but it clearly has a completely different emphasis. And that makes me wonder which way they'll go for DA3.

In DA2, I see what the reviewer was saying about getting what he wanted-- a story that's smaller in scope and geography. Sometimes stories are more meaningful and more character driven in a tighter scope. But then, that's also what made Mass Effect (the trilogy) so good, was that they had a hugely epic scope, but made you really feel it. You can have a story that is "ho, hum, save the world, save everyone, again, *yawn*", or it can be OMGWTF-epic, and a lot of it depends on the writing, the music, and how all of the parts come together. A story can be good  at any scale if it's well executed.

Indeed. :D I don't play much online...never really was good at any kind of online multiplayer, but according to Steam, I've logged about 188 hours in the single-player game. For me, that's a lot. I've really been getting into the A.D. 1257 mod lately.

I still haven't really done much in M&B since it was in development. I played it quite a bit during it's development-launch. I really should play the post-launch versions. :)
