Title: Customized Poleaxe
Post by: Ian on 2013-07-16, 22:19:30
Contacted A&A today about doing a semi-custom poleaxe.  I want something appropriate to my impression.  I'm thinking with my armor and soft kit, it places me roughly near the Baron or maybe even Earl level, and I need a knightly weapon to downsize the French Chivalry with...

If you look at late 14th century illuminations most of the poleaxes are relatively simple in design.  The A&A Knightly Poleaxe, a repro of the A926 in the Wallace Collection is about 60-100 years too new for me in style, and if you compare the manuscripts the A925 (Burgundian) looks awfully similar to what you commonly see for the first half of the hundred years war.

Craig at A&A is going to add a punched trefoil to the blade, and do some detail work on the langets suitable to the time period and status of my impression and add a steel butt-cap to the haft for me.  I've given him creative license on the langets stylization so I'm excited to see what he comes up with!

Will update in the future!

Well played A&A.... well played....

So I wake up on the ship this morning to an email from Helen asking about a significant charge to her debit card from Arms and Armor....

Turns out they accidentally charged the remainder of the balance on the customized poleaxe to Helen's card because it was on file when she bought me the Black Prince for Christmas last year.  Haha... Ratted out by A&A!!!  No one is safe!!!  :)

Anyways, I thought that was pretty funny.  The good news is that means the poleaxe is done and will be shipping imminently!!  Pics when it arrives!

Haha, oops!

"Oh, honey, I thought since you bought me a sword last year you'd want to continue the theme and buy me a pole axe this year, so I was proactive in helping reduce your work load by picking out my own pole axe so you can spend more time with the baby."

If that works, let me know... lol

So she can spend more time w/the baby, Sir James?  Are you aiming to have our newest Brother hamstrung by his lady wife for such a comment?  lol

That is a funny happenstance- good thing Lady Helen is a supporter of your other pursuit, eh?  I can quietly acquire some things, but a hefty poleaxe like that?  Nahhh...she'd sniff that out in a heartbeat, if only because she'd be aware something had my attention other than her.  ;)

Err, yeah, maybe this is why I have trouble with women sometimes. :)

You were born about 500 or so years later than you should've, Brother. ;)

She came in last night!

The customization includes the punch work and inlays on the blade itself, the detailing and punch work on the langets.  I really like the inset brass accent on the langets!  They did a great job!  Totally exceeded my expectations.

The inlay on the blade was a total surprise.  We hadn't really talked about anything like that, and when I took it out of the box and saw it for the first time I was really floored!  A&A was great to work with, and really good about communication and working with me on pricing and all that.

yeah, that's how my experiences with them have been as well. They'll go the extra mile to put in those few details that really make the piece come together.
