With effectively only two weeks to go (since I'm going away on vacation in the middle of this), I'm trying to get some Mass Effect N7 armor together for the Shore Leave convention...
I must be crazy. :)

And one of the images I'm using for inspiration (part of the ME3 artwork, but I'm making more of an ME2 armor):

Looks nifty!
-
Yes, that's definitely crazy time constraints! But if you pull this off, we might have to chat sometime about some Iron Man armor .. it's on my "bucket list".
Have fun at Shore Leave!
-
With a lot of "cutting corners" and ignoring details, I think I can barely pull it off. It's going to be rough though.
I have the chest+abdomen shaped but not assembled, and I have the vambraces and rerebraces shaped as well, and am working on the pauldrons. Haven't started on the back, neck, or legs yet. Or much of the painting (which thankfully will be pretty light, mostly just the red/white stripe on the right side, and edging and the like).
Oh yes, Ironman is totally doable. People make those out of the same foam I'm using.
-
Some in-game shots using the color-scheme I'm aiming for:

Awesome! Some day, I'm going to the range in an Iron Man suit .. just because I can. :)
-
dude u made it all from the floor mats? awesome
-
Right...thought the floormat was just for background. His armor looks like carbon fibre plates...and I forgot how crisp game images are on the PC, that's fantastic detail.
-
Yep, the rubber mats have almost the right surface pattern. People use them for cosplay armor like this quite a bit. They're perfect for the Mass Effect armors. :)
-
And rubber breathes well :)
Can't wait to see it completed! I've seen a lot of cosplay stuff done of pepikura (sp??) as well, mostly Halo Master Chief suits.
-
I'm having to NOT be a perfectionist, and allow myself to cut corners and do things quickly, since I'm so short on time, so this is going to have a lot of visible flaws up close. Definitely a "hand-made costume" sort of thing. I'm going for more of a "20 foot rule" I think. :)
I really hope I can get it done in time without pulling some all-nighters.
I have most of the work done on the arms and chest, still need to work some more on the abdomen and codpiece, and am starting on the back. Haven't started the legs at all yet.
-
dude that is awesome. what are you wearing it over? like the gortex long underwear or what?
can't wait to see more of it. i think it looks great. what about your weapon?
-
Holy crap! That is starting to really look great! Are you doing a helmet too?
-
No, I won't have time for a helmet. The gun right now is just a nerf-gun painted up in N7-themed colors, by someone on ebay. I may have to get something better later.
Here's someone using the construction method I'm using:
http://www.gamutofgeek.com/?p=204 (http://www.gamutofgeek.com/?p=204)
And this guy (though he made a helmet and gun, more detailed legs than I'm going to do, etc):

Under-garments will just be black stuff. I have some underarmor stuff, but we'll see what's the most comfortable.
-
need to "stuff" that codpiece. lol or glue a piece on top of it to layer it
-

Here's a weird question- does that thing open up or something? Pretty highly detailed; looks like it should open.
-
No, the codpiece just has some of the foam carved away, and I put some slight curvature into it. Otherwise it's one piece (with a little black backing behind the "buckle" at the top of it).
-
Wow, this is a really nicely done female Shepard cosplay:
http://www.cosplay.com/costume/419575/ (http://www.cosplay.com/costume/419575/)
And so is this one:

And some variations:

The first one, the redhead is cute but the second one? ULTRA HOT...wow. So what's the deal, is Shepard a male or female, or somewhere in between?

Either. They did the voice-acting with both male and female actors, so that you can choose when you play. They have the standard "poster face" image for the character, or you can customize the face to your own design. It's actually pretty flexible.
There are also many variations on the armor in-game, and in both ME2 and ME3, you can customize it by mixing and matching parts, and choosing the colors. So as long as it has a few of the standard design elements, you can actually take a lot of liberties with costume armor and have it still look "right".

... plus many, many more on google image search.

This guy is one of my favorites. He does all the sculpts himself and casts the pieces, and hand-paints. He does some mass effect stuff, but he's particularly adept at his Star Wars stuff:

Here's his Darth Revan armor:

Ah, he's the one who did that really great Garrus cosplay. I've seen a few in the image searches, but his is one of the best.
-
That SW Old Republic armor is sick!!! I LOVE IT!! Great detail. :)
-
man Sir Edward I wanna make some stuff like that
-
Deep down ... Sir Wolf is a Toys R Us kid. :)
-
Some progress tonight. Not all of it is well held together yet. :)

-
Very impressive! That matting is so perfect to replicate the texture of Shepherd's armor. Great job so far Sir Ed!
-
i was like where is that.......... onh ya you have a shop now lol!!!!!!!
man that is hella cool! hope your saving the patterns cause i want a set. how many mats does it take?
-
Here's where I downloaded the patterns:
http://www.julianbeek.nl/blog/ (http://www.julianbeek.nl/blog/) (have to click through to "older entries" at the bottom to get the rear torso)
His sizing was a little weird to figure out at first, and it doesn't always work 100%. It's helpful to cut out a little extra length in some places, and remove it later if it's not needed. It's also vague in some places, leading me to having all sorts of sizing problems with the pauldrons. And it's irritating me that everyone in the N7 cosplay world refers to the vambraces as "gauntlets".
So far I've used one "black" mat, and 6 of the "charcoal" mats, but I haven't started on the legs yet. I'll probably end up using at least 4 or 5 more to do the legs, since I don't think I can fit more than one leg section on each.
-
where is last night's updates?
how much mula you think your gonna have in this project? lol
-
That's coming along nicely, Sir Edward. Can't wait to see the finished product.
-
Nothing new to report for about a week now. I'll post more pics later next week.
-
slacker, get busy man. or the ban hammer will be waiting!
-
how have I missed this!? :D
that's awesome Sir Edward! It's looking pretty good. If you have a problem, then I must have a disease! EVA foam sure can be fun. I still can't believe what I'm using it for, and I just hope the LEDs don't melt it or anything lol.
-
Tonight I got started on the cuisses (nothing worth showing yet), and made some progress on the back details:
-
Coming along nicely!
-
I spent most of the day yesterday working on the legs, and got the cuisses and greaves built and strapped, but not detailed, and I still need to add the knees. The strapping took forever, especially since I had to keep experimenting with them. And I'm still not happy with how two of the straps are sitting, so I may have to cut them off and re-do them.
So the main list of things left to do is:
Strapping the shoulders (cuirass and pauldrons)
Attach codpiece + abdominal plate
Waist strap
Details on back plates + collar
Details on cuisses
Details on greaves
Make the knees
Finish the finger details on the gloves
Still a lot to do. And only the next few evenings to do it in.
-
pics or ban! lol
-
Pics of the things I haven't done yet? lol
-
Somehow I picture Sir Wolf as the one causing the scene in line waiting for his morning coffee ... :)
-
Assembled front, and back of the greaves:

-
u got a strap in the groin area from the front piece to the back? lol a thong! ahhahaha
the ban hammer will hover but won't drop on ya ;) thanks for the pics bud!
-
Pics of the things I haven't done yet? lol
Ladies and Gentlemen.... Sir Wolf :D
-
hey, i didn't say it was farby or anything lol
-
lol, no, I don't have a thong strap on it. I could add one, but I think it'll actually get in the way in this case.
Anyway, tonight is the first time I could test-fit everything together. Still lots not done yet. I haven't put any of the details on the legs yet, still haven't made the knees, still missing lots of details on the back, etc.
Wearing the wrong color shirt, but I did a quick test-fit:

Sweet!!!!! 8)
-
Totally badass! How does it feel? Is it heavy or is it pretty light? How is moving in it?
-
wow that is really awesome.
how did you glue it together? any fear that it will come apart with use?
-
It's mostly comfortable, except for heating up real quick. The foam is very insulating. But it's super light. I expect the whole thing probably weighs less than 5 pounds, but I haven't weighed it. It's easy to forget some of the pieces are on. When working on parts, I sometimes forgot to take off the rerebrace or greave I was test-fitting a few minutes earlier, and kept it on for like 30 minutes.
It restricts movement a little, but not too badly. Mainly I won't be able to sit because the cuisses stick straight into the hip. Also, the breastplate is just wide enough that it interferes with bringing my arms together out in front, but I can still do it since the whole thing flexes.
It's all held together with hot-glue. No leaving it in a hot car. But I can't do that anyway since I used a heat-gun to put curvature into the foam, and when re-heated it wants to lose the curve. Some parts hold the curve better when it's more than one layer, and they're glued together while curved.
It's not the most durable stuff, but it shouldn't pull apart either. Most of the straps have some elastic in them so that it can stretch a little without ripping out from the foam.
So far I've used something like 8 yards of nylon strap, 5 or 6 yards of elastic, and 10 or 12 feet of velcro.
After taking those photos last night, I made the knees and added stripes into the greaves. You can see it in the upper one in this photo:
-
I'm impressed...that's very good looking, Sir Edward.
-
Well, I started this crazy project weeks ago, and all along my plan was to finish tonight, so I wouldn't be pushing it right to the last minute. Well, I got it together tonight. :)
Feeling pretty bad-ass here. :)

Sir Edward is all ready for Comi Con 2013!!! :)
-
Pretty sweet. Take some pics at the con.
-
Man, that really looks great! I really love the detail on the back, the things that look like vertebrae.
-
The best part is that I maintained good trigger discipline. :)
-
Man...I'm blown away. You're going to be a hit at the comic con...wouldn't be surprised if you found yourself on promo art at some point. Very nicely done. Now you just need the buzz cut and you're set! ;)
-
Alright, we need to put some of these talents to work here. :) Sir Edward's Mock Armor & Costume Menagerie is now open for business. Now taking orders!!!

Uh, No, and No. :)

Great job! The back looks very intricate!

For those not following on facebook, I got "Best Workmanship" this weekend! I didn't win anything in the main judging, and those judges probably didn't know what I was supposed to be. :) But in the workmanship category, the judges were very excited, and I got the only trophy award for that section. So that's a big win.
