I was able to shoot a few of the demos yesterday (8 June 2013) at VARF. I selected 38 photos that came out reasonably well and posted them on the album, the entire set is up to view on Flickr and can be seen here

Here is a sampling of some of the shots. On the last show of the day we did some cutting demos on some villainous French cabbages! There are also some good shots of the Blossfechten and Harnessfechten demos.

Those pics look awesome, I seriously need to move down there so I can join you guys. Your camera captures it quite well too, looks almost like some scenes out of medieval movies in a way.

wwwwwwwwooooooowwwwwww awesomeeeeeeeeeee

Great pictures! I'm glad you made it to VARF, and thanks for taking pics!
-
Those are amazing pics Sir Ian!
-
Awesome pictures Sir Ian! It was great finally getting to meet you and your wonderful family as well. :)
-
Great shots, Sir Ian! Really loved the villainous cabbages getting their just desserts! :)
-
Those photos are fantastic!!
-
Thank you all! It was a blast getting to take them! I realized after I left though how stupid I was for never getting a shot with all of us! Doh!
-
I saw the group photo on the Order facebook page of Sir Wolf's knighting. I like it!! :) Always need more photos especially group ones as they are hard to come by. Nice demo shots Sir Ian. Those french cabbages got their just deserve. :P Now let me get some potatoes, carrots, onions, broth, herbs & soup is on. ;D

lol, that reminded me of one of my favorite quotes from the 1992 movie version of 'Last of the Mohicans', ;)
the French haven't the nature for war. Their Gallic laziness combines with their Latinate voluptuousness with the result that they would rather eat and make love with their faces than fight.
-
Good stuff! :D
-
Awesome photos Sir Ian, thank you for coming down and taking them! :)
-
really proud of you guys. looked awesome when i saw it. would have loved to see the full armoured combat. it sucks living so far away.
-
SO I’ve been thinking, dreaming and scheming. What if we expanded next year’s demo to include some additional weaponry? – If we can convince the VARF Entertainer director to again make us the last act of the day for the joust field we can have an expanded show to demonstrate other weapons and even additional duels with perhaps…
…
Wait for it…
…
Poleaxes! ;D
What do you all think?
-
Polaxes would have to be part of the harnessfechten. They're just too dangerous to use unarmored. We would have to invest in several more rubber-headed trainers for that too.
But yeah, expanding the weapon selection is always a good thing. We could do some arming sword, buckler, messer, spear. The Liechtenauer system includes those.
-
what if, IF, you do a different section for each part of the day? start out smaller stuff and build to the final full armoured combat at the end of the day?
10am have the steel combat unarmoured like what i saw 2 weeks ago
1pm heavier combat with wasters and bucklers
4pm everyone full armoured with polearms etc. team battle royale?

Well yes most definitely! Otherwise we would only be able to do ONE show! ;)

Precisely, we could even go as small as daggers.

Yes! This would be the general gist of what we could do. We would of course have to revise and shorten our introduction and lecture portions to where we could have time for two or more different weapon duels. Perhaps start with a dagger then go to a longsword, then the second show include arming swords and bucklers, etc. :)
-
Arming swords and bucklers- quick, someone give me a towel, I'm overcome with drool! :)
-
We kicked around the idea a bit at one of the rehearsals, doing longsword for the final show, and sabre/messer or rapier/buckler/etc for earlier shows. Sir Nathan and I kicked around the poleaxe idea too, but lack of time and funds to get some suitable ones to use and practice with beforehand shot it down for this year.
Only downside to the harnessfechten is the damage. My breastplate has a bunch of nicks in the center ridge from being hit with the steel, and I've got 3 dents I found in the helmet I need to take out so far - and one is at the edge of the visor and I'm not sure if I can repair it. I haven't even looked at the rest of the armor yet, due to the soggy tent. :(
Maybe I just need some nice heat treated carbon steel? :D
Edit: We also might want to consider making the mid-day show the "longer" show if we can get it without anyone following us - the crowd seems considerably larger for those compared to end of the day.
-
Hammers!!! YES!!!! :)
-
maces at noon it is!

"you whine like a mule, you are still alive!" lol hehehhe
-
LOL. I should show you my helm. Ripped aventail, dented helm, dented & torn kit.
-
I lie the idea. :)
Mixed weapons with harnessfechten, and maybe an armoured grand melee for the last show! Oh happy day! ;D
-
Darn it. I want to hammer somebody. :(
-
Man! You guys make your renfairs way more awesome than any of ours here, even though some are the "originals!" I may have to talk to my group about setting up demos at the phoenix fair next year. Hearing all these posts just makes me want to hop a plane and visit. And I HATE flying, like BA in A-Team, HATE flying! ;D
