and dangit if i didnt buy one today. i had to buy mild butted due to finances at this time. :( its killing me inside but i couldnt swing the 350 bucks. and i WANTED something for the may photo shoot and kept looking at my riveted cheater ZINC plated set thinking i had to do the feet and ugggggggggggg lol. so no someone else who needs it can borrow that for the shoot.
please pray for me as i bought riveted. lol

Wow! And we were SO close to finally getting you knighted! Oh well I guess you'll have to wear them for your funeral effigy! ;)
-
PICS or you have to give them to me!
-
there not here yet you goat! lol. ya i will have the crossed legs effigy!!
ya thats why i bought them. i wanted a more complete 1250-1300 kit. my surcoat is all cut out and to be sewn this week!
-
Now they finally offer wedge riveted chausses in the USA.... After I payed 60 bucks for shipping for a pair from Germany that are the tie in the back type. My German ones are a smaller ring size than these ones most likely as they're 7-8 MM and not 9MM like these. But they cost me 240 bucks INCLUDING 60 bucks shipping so I did get a deal. Only issue is they're the tie in the back ones and I kinda need some help on how to tie them. I used up all my leather tie so I guess using jute cord would be a better idea and tougher because my leather tie constantly snaps. Any suggestions on how to tie them?
-
Tie them with slipknots, no matter how wet or tightened the knot becomes from sweat and strain they are easiest to untie. ;)

cant wait!! pics tonight!
-
Yes pictures! Preferably before thy lady gets thy blood all over them! ;)
-
ok got them and had to clean them. they are coated in grease like usual.
did a test fit and they fit nicely. man it's gonna be a pain to tie the foot on these lol. i need to put on a pair of wool hose and then put these on and tie them to my arming jacket. then tie the foot. then readjust. i figure i better get to the photo shoot WAY early to get these on. the box said 15 lbs for shipped. so not to bad. had to go with the butted but it doesn't look too bad form 5 ft. i still know WAAAAAAAHHHHH lol.
-
Ooooo those are good pricing for the rivoted ones.

Yep, now you get to enjoy the 20 minutes of lacing each time you want to use them, like I do. :)
-
please pray for me as i bought riveted. lol
had to go with the butted
You got butted? I thought riveted??
Are these "stocking" style or open in the back? Enjoy the lacing!
And I suggest taking out that god-awful modern "belt loop" part and putting a leather strip to lace to. :)
-
there full stocking style. ya i plan to put it on once i get home next week and tweek it if needed. may also use a low shoe and leave it laced in place.... maybe lol
-
ALRIGHT!
i was playing around with one tonight. i put one of my shoes in it and laced it under. then pulled the shoe off. i am able to put the shoe on and then put it thru the chausis with the lacing already in place!! sweet!!!! half the battle!! i went thru every other row and tied it like a boot lace under it. now i gotta get more lacing for the other one. another walmart list!

I must say, especially when considering mail, as a devout member of the chain gang, I must agree with Sir James 8) lol

Far be it from me to whiz in your wheaties but since they are butted maille wouldn't the lacing hold better if you added a riveted link and laced it through them? ???

That's a good point. Adding a few riveted links at the edges would be pretty easy. But then again, the links might have really nice tight/narrow closures as it is, so it might not be a problem.
-
if this is meant to be elsewhere, I do apologize, but on the topic of butted mail. What is good for combat? I've heard the gammut of answers, and I just cant get something as thick as 12 gauge fencing wire on my 5/16" dowel I made. :o It'd be way too heavy. I like the diameter of the 5/16" and I'm not afraid to start riveting too (another shout out to Arador and Armourarchive on good resources). Just after I finish my little gallowglass coif project, I want to know what to use to make my crusader mail. :)
-
The rivets make all the difference in the strength of the armor. With butted links, you need to go to 14ga-12ga to make them rigid enough to withstand being hit, but with rivets the rings can be significantly lighter weight. Frequently they were something like 17ga flattened steel. It's much more difficult and time consuming to work with rivets, but that's how it was done historically because it's so much more effective.

Seconded, or possibly lace a strip of leather to point with, since it will spread the load across multiple rings.

I notice KOA has new hauberks in stock too. The sleeves also look tailored to a degree still not a huge amount or maybe thats just how they hang.
-
i will post pictures tonight. it's just me and the 2 year old so we'll see what we can accomplish!
-
Sounds good Sir Wolf! Looking forward to the pictures. I've been researching mail myself, and I gotta say it looks as if my frugalness requires me to put in a ton of work instead!

I gotta attach my knee cops to mine but I am still unsure on how to attach the shoes to the feet, mine are the tie in the back ones which I have no clue how to attach a foot to them. Lacing my knee cops to them should be easy enough as I got the merc tailor knee cops and elbow cops, cept mine are fluted which i'm not sure is period for the 1200s but meh I like the look better.
-
Those chauces look good Sir Wolf 8)
I like the knee cops too, nice and simple for good early period floaters

Yeah Allan's you can tie directly to the mail if you got them with the point holes. As far as the shoes, you'll probably have to do it the "hard" way and not have them attached directly. It's a little more work, but not bad. You can put the chausses on first, then just use some lace to tie them up a bit temporarily, put on your shoes and tie them, then take out that temporary lace and let the chausses sit over top of the shoes. It's not hard, just takes a little time. The look is worth the time.
-
Sir Wolf,
I don't know if your google-fu has found this yet, but it seems to be a fairly good tutorial for chausses. http://dawnofchivalry.wikispaces.com/Mail+Chausses+-+Biro's+Project (http://dawnofchivalry.wikispaces.com/Mail+Chausses+-+Biro's+Project)
I'm weaving right now, so I'm still a ways off from actually attaching them myself, I like the concept though. Like trimming mail with leather, it looks like it would work well, in theory ;D

It's worked fine for me around the house so far, did mine like that a year or two ago. :)

mail chausis..................... suck. i seriously need to take these apart in the thighs and tighten them up. kinda afraid to do it now cause I may not get them back together in time. I would also like to add to them to much exposed thigh for my taste.
-
fyi. i just dyed my turnshoes black.
-
Girl look at 'dem chausses....

He works out!
-
Thats looking good, now I'm starting to wish I had chausses like those cept riveted, but considering they're loose a bit on you, the full ones probably wont fit my stick legs....
-
ya these need some serious tailoring. i need to take about 8 inches of mail in the thighs. and then add that to the height. i want them to come up to just below the butt
-
Excellent! Good job.
A long enough gambeson and hauberk will take care of that exposed upper thigh, good enough for pictures. Then you have time after to tailor and tweak before VARF / MDRF.
-
LMAO @ Ian
Why'd I hear that in my head?
-
Those look great Sir Wolf. Outstanding work. :D
-
now my dilemma. are knees period with the rest of my kit lol
-
now my dilemma. are knees period with the rest of my kit lol
I found through rigorous research and musty tomes of old that the fighting men, and all other human beings for that matter have had knees since before antiquity! A neat design feature of homo sapiens. ;-) Oh you mean armor??
-
lol poleyns. poleyns i say!!!!
-
sigh, i can't find any evidence for my poleyns with the helmet i made. and i really want to wear this kit for the pictures since its the most complete so looks like no poleyns for me :( lol. BUT that means they will go with a later kit that i have to finish lol
-
Sir Wolf,
I finally found that picture of the strapped chausses on the turn shoe!
(http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4029/4300825325_4cea2530d9_o.jpg) that guy's flikr is amazing!

That's Joe Metz! He's a buddy of ours with whom we attended Days of Knights last year. His kits and encampments serve as an inspiration for us all.

Yep! Very cool guy.
-
I had a feeling you guys were fortunate enough to know him. Man his flikr is such an inspiration! I can't imagine seeing his kits up close. I gotta prep for a trip east sometime soon, probably not this year, but I'd love to go to DOK. There's something great when the website says it isn't a RenFaire and no fantastical outfits allowed. That and I need me some Waffle House :) it just isn't the same west of the Rio Grande
-
joe is a cool guy to talk to. he suffers from some of the same afflictions as i do. (i can't do that it's not period. or uggg thats wrong on my kit? noooooooo now i gotta make a new one) lol
update. added some leather cords thru the knee areas and around the top of my mail chausis. hope this helps with some of the sag issues this Sunday. after that i am definitely taking them apart and fitting them as well as extending the back and sides
-
Sir Wolf,
I hope those leather straps help out as that's what I'm planning for mine as well. Mr. Metz's flikr showed how using that leather just below the knee helps them have enough room for the bend in the knee and keeping them up still as well. Mine will only be half-chausses to start with (earlier period) so hopefully that'll make them easier, but we'll see! :D

there are far worse afflictions to suffer from, genericeltings being one example, pointy ears being another! ;D
-
i found some art that actually showed a garter strap below the knee. i just dont wanna go that route.
-

Genericeltings? Ha! Haven't heard that one before.
One of the new terms I heard at MDRF in the last couple of years is "prostiteers", for the slutty-looking female pirates. :)

ooohh, I really like that one. I'll have to pass that one on to my reenactment buddies back in Dana Point. They strive for "accurate enough" as a compromise. It's a shame too, there are so many in that group that are knowledgeable and love teaching others, they just also don't have the "say" within the group.
Sir Wolf, definitely avoid the garters! :D Man oh man, just reminds me of "shirt-stays" in the military. They were something of a trend in A-school in the Coast Guard. Everyone (myself included) for the most part wore them because they were trying to emulate their old Company Commanders (which isn't necessarily a bad thing at all). Then when we'd all sit down, you'd almost hear a joint "SNAP!" as they snapped out of place, and usually always the lower ones... I don't think I need to tell you where the unlucky ones hit ;) ;D
I'd avoid anything like that with all due haste! Beyond that though, maybe another form of strapping could work, on the lateral sides maybe? Just thought of something like the comfy thigh-rigs we used to wear.
