So I have a 9th cen eastern european persona.
I'm going from bazubands to a partly hidden arm harness. I figure on hidden elbows (via Clang) and vambraces on the outside. Would a valsgarde splint vambrace be appropriate? Something else?

I wear plate bazubands sometimes in place of my full-arm plated harness. You can see in my pics on my knight page for reference. Easier on & off. Splinted armor was made for leather vambraces & plated elbow guards. I would go with the valsgarde splint myself but for helmets... I personally like the Anglo-Coppergate Helm with just the nasal guard better because the full-face place plate guard on a valsgarde style brushes against my face. Very uncomfortable. Also, it looks better I think for the 9th century warrior.

Bazubands & plate are inappropriately early IIRC.
Would Vendel style arms still be around.
When did the arms below come into play?

I would love to go without vambraces but I field against guys like Duke Uther & I have no insurance. :)

Sounds like you have a dilemma. Hope you are only using foam because rattan is gonna hurt. lol

Rattan man! :D
Duke Uther is the 6'6" man on BOTN Team USA & the 9 time Crown winning Squire of Duke Jade of Starfall (SCA record holder for most Crowns won with 16 to his name).
While my skill went to hell in this fight I share it to let you know this fact: I'm 6' & 245lbs in this vid.
