Title: Rob Roy 'Honor'
Post by: Sir Edward on 2012-06-06, 13:23:58

Sir Brian was kind enough to share this on facebook. I thought I'd pass it along here as well.

You know, as time passes I realize how good that movie is.  I picked up a copy on ebaY because I'd seen the last fight scene on YT and wanted to see what the rest of the movie was like.  I thought it well written and well cast...and I'd forgotten about this scene, but it says it so well nothing need be added.  Thanks for sharing, Sirs Brian and Edward.

YES!  One of the best movie quotes!  This move scene puts a smile on my face.   ;D

I agree that Honor is something that not only can a man give to himself but it is earned as well.  No one can ever take away the honor of being Knighted or take away the fact I live by a Code tried and true even though society says "its dead and who cares anymore".  No one will ever take away the Honor of being in the company of Chivalrous Brethren like you all and no one will ever take away the Honor of me being Knighted (when that time comes).

One can argue that Honor is a form of Virtuous Courage, abiding by Honor takes Courage to stand for what you believe, what you know is the right thing to do and acting on your word.  Even though you loose a lot of acquaintances, you may be unpopular with the girls and even mocked or made fun of because you "act like a do gooder", "wussy for not being a man" (according to the world's viewpoint), you taking a stand for doing the right thing takes Courage and Honor.

But in the end, the friends worth having would not only admire you for that, they will respect you further and friendships become stronger.  The one woman who will become the Mrs. would not only appreciate that you act with Honor, she will do the same in regards to the relationship/marriage and Trust is never broken.

This is why Honor is essential in living by the Code of Chivalry.  Still I enjoyed this clip, thank you for sharing Sir Edward.

That would be a Transitional Baroque Rapier.

Smallswords do not appear until the mid 1700's.  Plus don't think about starting the infamous Rapier/Broadsword effectiveness debate started by Mr. Silver.   ;)

Ah, thank you, Sir Joshua, but I was not using it as a name, but as a description because it is, in fact, a 'small' sword, as opposed to Roy's much larger broadsword.

I understand Sir William.  Different swords will always have different lengths, widths and shapes thus creating their unique purposes.

Love Liam Neeson flicks. "Rob Roy" has a classic scene where his wife gets it in the most medieval fashion.... "Just think of yourself as the scabbard & me as the sword."  So much for that redhead's honor.

No one can take away your honor. Only you can do that via your actions. Being the victim of an assault is not the same as being a willing participant of a dishonorable act. Admittedly,in period a lady's honor was not defined the same as a man's (the former being tied up more with sexuality than anything else). In modern times this is obviously not the case.

Tis true. Was disgraceful & noone can take pride in such a dishonorable depiction of degradation & depravity to such a fine, fiery redhead ... :P Now that I think about it... it was just a movie & that redhead was pretty hot... Where was I when they were casting?????

I think, when they were casting for the part of Archibald, they were looking for an actor who could portray an immoral misogynist, not a person who seems to evince those sorts of tendencies.  ;)

His character was a classic bad-ass (the kind you want to kill by the end of the story). Imperial-like sarcasm in perfect colonial overtone with heavy emphasis on immorality from a resentful bastard's upbringing taking pride in every indecent act & evil depravity in which he engages without any sort of conscience. Loved hating him!! :) Was like watching Christopher Walken who remains my #1 best played bad guy. Excellent protrayal !!

An excellent clip that is.

I was only recently discussing the subject of honor with my 11 year old daughter as a matter of fact. She was asking me why it seemed to her that the people who had the least worthiness went around using the word honor the most. She was referring to various politicians who take titles such as the right honorable, or honorable, etc.

It is important that we teach the young ones about such things early on because, sadly, very few folk these days are truly acquainted with the real meaning of terms like honor or humility.

Truly your 11 year old is very astute to make such a subtle distinction when many so called adults miss it entirely! You good sir are greatly blessed.  :)

Thank you for the compliment, Sir Brian.

Yes indeed, I am quite proud of my daughter. She has been raised close to my tradition and she already has an enlightened view of the world I wish I had possessed at her young age. I think she will make a fine Warrior or healer one day - as she seems already to possess the spirit of both those things.

This movie had a PROFOUND effect on my life growing up.  It is a beautiful, underrated film.  Far better than others.

that's awesome Covus.

It's like how I was talking with some of my friends from school, all about 10 years my junior about what the media is "feeding" them.  Not to go into politics at all, but it is interesting how often they are related as our "leaders" rather than our "elected officials."

In any regards, honor is definitely one of those very sentiment of virtues.  It's so easy to stray from the path when one is fighting for it.

Indeed. I hear that. In my province we have our provincial elections coming up and thus everyone gets all worked up about his party or that. When the candidates in my area come up to attempt to garner votes from me I ask direct questions - and these questions are devised to get an idea about the attitude of the candidate among other things. Those who seek office to serve are exceptionally rare as I am sure you know.

At times like this I am always reminded of something the science fiction author, David Brin said with regard to power and corruption: "It is said that power corrupts, but actually it's more true that power attracts the corruptible. The sane are usually attracted by other things than power."
