Title: Heraldic Heater shield.
Post by: SirNathanQ on 2012-05-16, 03:04:17
Here's my heraldic heater shield. (late 13th through mid 14th cent.) This I also mde myself, with the same process as the Teutonic Heater sheild (I would be happy to explain in detail on either thread). Altogether, it's 1/2 inch Birch with thick canvas facing. This shield is wickedly fast and maneuverable.

Here's the link to the facebook album. http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.442564092421792.105116.100000046165415&type=3 (http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.442564092421792.105116.100000046165415&type=3)

Credits to my Dad, Sir James and Milady Rachel, who I can thank for the incredible painting :)

Good job!

That's about the same shape & proportion shield Count Syr Gemini de Grendel (http://www.meowzettes.com/movies.htm#Gemini) favors.

Nice, I bet painting that heraldry was a test of patience. :)

Sir James, it was, though milady's expertice made it much quicker and a better result :)

Ivan, I would seem to be in good company asofar as taste in shield size. I will say, it would probably be my single combat choice.

I'm going to guess he means something like polyurethane, or a spray-on clear-coat. The problem with the former is that it's usually glossy. The latter comes in a variety of finishes, from flat/matte through glossy.

Where would I get one of the flat clear coats?

You should be able to get it at any local Lowe's or Home Depot...some hardware stores that carry paint supplies should have it as well.

If you use a spray, my advice is just to be careful about getting it on evenly. Since it's clear, it's hard to tell where you sprayed and where you didn't, especially since it dries pretty quickly.

Please do explain your process in The Workshop.  There is no such thing as too much knowledge.  (And I, for one, would like to know your process  :) ).

I can't speak for Sir Nathan, but here's how I made mine.  I'm betting the technique he used is similar.

Do it indoors, uniform sweeps with a steady hand.  I've seen what happens when one attempts to spray paint in high winds...my brother's first car; his best friend swore he could give him a new paintjob for next to nothing- set up a stall in his backyard with unanchored plastic walls.  Yea...that worked out GREAT.  lol

A mistake and a lesson in one event.
