what would people think about putting together thoughts, resources etc about making each of our kits all match the same year. could have wiggle room etc for personal tastes, regions etc but same major details. the talks on Days of Knights have really got my brain working on a fully detailed historical kit.... but what year? hehehe
-
As cool as it is, I don't know if we could all agree on a single year. Every time you add or remove something, or upgrade a component, you can end up shifting your year by a decade in one direction or the other.
Heh, on the DoK thread on facebook, someone was pointing out narrowing the Hospitaller kit in one of the pics to a specific decade because of a combination of the armor and the black surcoat. :)
I'm trying to get myself together enough that I can have reasonably period mail that will work with my usual circa-1300 kit, but also work convincingly as a 1250-1300 sort of thing, as a Teutonic knight perhaps (I have the surcoat and cloak on the way now, I decided to try the GDFB versions).
Sometimes getting everyone into the same century is hard enough. :)
-
I'm 200-700 years behind all the rest of you.

I'm quite heavily invested in the 2nd half of the 14th century myself.... and still not quite finished with my kit (waiting to hear back from HE on a proper bascinet). So unless that year is say 1356-1400 I'd have a hard time financially justifying it, at least for the next couple of years...
Although I'd love to get involved with some sort of serious living history. We could do a time progression if people's kits are temporally spaced out though... I lurk on the DoK Facebook group since I'm not a member, but it looks really awesome.
-
I'm hoping to start work on the much talked about Teutonic Kit I've been planning next winter. I'm shooting for mid-14th century, say 1340-1360s. With my involvment in 16/17th century reenacting it's hard to pull together the financial resources to work on the other kits I want to do. It would be cool for all of us to have kits in roughly the same time period, though.
-
I think a lot of the DoK guys are going for 13th century roughly, since it's relatively easy to do, and you still have all three of the main crusading orders to work with.

Of course this is my preference! ;)
Seriously though I know Sir Edward has a mid 14th which really seems the most viable and versatile considering the diversity of kits we all currently possess. :-\
-
Yeah, my mid-14th is my least complete so far. I still have tailoring to do on the mail, get a nicer jupon/surcoat made, etc. I still haven't decided on a helm, greaves, gauntlets, etc.
-
I truly think that this would take years upon years and a lot of money to truly make happen. However, we could very well use everyone's kits as a cumulative effort. When you think of the first question posed, the question begs being answered... "why?"
Since everyone has already invested what they could into their kits so far. We could discuss how and for what reason we would create a purpose. Such as a program to put on for a school, battle ethics of Knights. and i am not talking about the modern ideal that chivalry means being a gentlemen, rather the reality of chivalry in the past, chivalry being that of prowess and honor. That knights would wage a war against his neighbor and equally wage a war against an invading army.
Just have to open the door and find out ultimately "why?"
-
just cause ;) plus it may give me a new kit to work on hehehe
-
Here's a new kit idea.
Come, join the (mostly) pre-christian Norse, we have.... cookies.

Everyone should do mac-bible (c.1250) crusader knights. There, solved. :)
-
The Knight Commander has spoken; c.1250 Crusader knights all! :)
I am really liking the look of the Varangian Guard...the earlier one reminds me of the Uhtred Ragnarson books by Cornwell- even though it is 2-300 years before 1066. I like it alot.
Sir Wolf...where'd you get your winningas from?
-
All these Norse pics almost make me want to work on a Viking kit ;) but I have enough pokers in the fire so to speak, so I'll finish up what I have planned first.
-
i made them outta wool. i think there like 4 inches wide and 3 yards long? have to measure them
-
You made them...of course. I wanna borrow yours or James' hands then. lol
-
well now, that'll cost ya ;) hahahhahahah
-
Wolf:
What kind of weave & at what weight did you make them from?
Debating on making my own like that, perhaps out of Linen, or buying from H.E.
$40 is a bit much for something I'm only using as decoration while fighting.
-
dont do linen. it doesnt stretch like wool does. i wear mine like the germans wore the putties in ww1. wrap once around the ankle, then go up the leg at an angle and wrap once under the knee then X back down the leg at an angle then wrap the entire leg upwards and tie or what have you at the top.
shouldnt be a decoration. sometimes these wear the socks of the time (like a sturup on pants) or a brush guard etc.
i think two of them are just a wool melton or something. and i have 2 that are a herringbone weave.
-
1250? dang it. not i have to make a Mac Bible helmet and buy the chausis. crap. anyone know if ice falcon is gonna have a sale again? i would think it rude to just out and ask him heheheh

Tailoring mail?? Nooooooooooo........... :D
-
I think the most viable years are 1330-1370.
We could cover anything from full maille and great helm to full plate. Noone would really need to go out and buy a whole new kit.

Except me, I'm still 150-200 years ahead of you guys.

Wait, I missed this, what I am doing? I'm worried. :D
-
We're reenacting the battle between Anakin and Count Dooku during the beginning of Episode III. You're standing in for Christopher Lee.
-
Mac Bible c.1250 impressions? The Knight Commander has spoken! I'm game...so long as I'm not required to have riveted mail. lol
LOL @ Nathan - good one!
-
then you'd be reenacting 20th century butted mail :P hahahha
-
You mean Sir James, I'm not re-enacting that duel...I already know what happens to Count Dook-ie. lol
-
OK so I move say 500 years up. I am still left with this question:
Why would a mench like me hang out with a bunch of meshugah goyim near Moshe's place in Tel Aviv? ;)
