Title: MASHS March Free Play Sunday
Post by: Sir Brian on 2012-03-12, 16:46:09
Well another month and another free play Sunday for MASHS at the Annapolis venue starting @ 2:30 PM this Sunday on March 18th. All are welcome no matter what your skill level as there should be enough present to provide training. Come out and play!

I may actually try to make it on Sunday. I need my periodic dose of hitting people. :)

Yes! Also I wouldn't want you to suffer from an 'Iron' imbalance so I'll do my best to hit you!  :P

Today's free play after the VARF auditions was more potent than I first thought. I changed my shirt and thought (in my best Takei voice) "oh my".

Guess which arm I get hit in the most?

Trick question. Both!

Awesome, you've been successfully initiated. :)

Some of that might be bites from the jacket. I'm not sure.

They're very crisp, clean, sword-sized lines. If I can just try to break myself of the habit of catching swords with my armpits, I believe it won't happen as much. :) It's motivation to finish up with my gambeson. Have fun at free play tomorrow, gentlemen!

Excellent and worthy wounds Sir James! It was a lot of fun and both you and Sir Nathan are naturals with a good sense of timing and measure already which is something many fighters struggle with. :)

Yeah, I think they still look like bites to me, I could be wrong of course. I get marks just like that when I wear the globose breastplate, or a fencing jacket that is too small. The upper arm gets them where they squeeze in on it. If that's the case, it's even better reason to get a properly fitting gambeson! :)

BTW, here's a possibility for a starting mask:

And a chest protector is a nice cheap and easy thing to get that helps a lot:

And this is basically what I was using for gloves:

Here is the one I use. One of the best features is the removable liner so it is easy to keep clean and it holds up well. Best part is they have it on sale! :)

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but they're towards the front of my arm and even when I cross my arms in front of me, the marks are still 90% visible. I used to get bruising from a breastplate that was too wide back when I did SCA heavy, and these are in a different spot. It might be from the jacket, since I've never worn a fencing jacket before yesterday, but either way I am just going to call them marks of bravery, and cut the sleeves off my shirt so I can proudly display them. :)

Now for the difficult question .... what size do I need for chest protector / gloves / mask? I hate when they list abstract sizes like small / medium / large. I have a medium arming coat from revival, yet my gambeson from IceFalcon is XXL. I need a "test fitting". :D

I know the mask I wore yesterday was a bit too big, and in some of the photos you can see it tilted back. It wasn't snug under my chin at all, but it kept my brain intact while Sir Edward got in many head shots, serving it's purpose well. I may postpone ordering until our next session and hopefully try on the items Sir Brian and Sir Edward have so I can gauge if it's the right size or too small / large, then order accordingly.

Yep, smart way to go I think. The abstract sizing is a pain. The chest protector at least is somewhat flexible, so the size doesn't have to be precise. You can try mine and see how it fits. I think it's a Large.

Well if you was wearing my spare mask, the same one Sir Nathan was wearing, it is a little big for me as well and I don't use it for longsword. I use the blue gauntlet one for longsword because it is a more snug fit.

Yep, basically what happens with the fencing jacket is that it if it's too small, it binds up around the upper arm when you reach your arms forward, and tends to cause those nice little crease-shaped bruises on the upper arm, around the bicep area.

Well earned marks of fighting though, in any case! :)
