At MASHS we were discussing additional back of the head protection for our fencing masks. I found this website today and will probably order one since it adapts to industry standard masks. Has anyone else tried these? :-\

I've seen something similar. It looks like it'll be useful. It's a lot cheaper than ordering a Terry Tindill helmet. :)
-
Yeah but Terry's helmets are so worth the extra money! :)
...it's the year long waiting list that's a deal breaker for me! :(

Awfully little you get for $50. hat's your results with the Pakistani helms and perf plate?

Well it is suppose to be hardened leather and is approximately the same amount of leather as what I paid for a cuir bouilli gorget at the same cost. I am a little confused by your question though, do you have a link to some Pakistani helms or perf plate that you referred to? ???

Why are you worried about the back of your head? You wouldn't run.
-
Most assuredly not Sir William! ;)
However it is a very potential danger especially when the attacker executes a zwerchau and then follows it up with another zwerchau to the opposite side of the head which can land on the backside of the skull. There is also the danger of your opponent throwing a blind cut behind and over their own heads if you have enveloped them…which had happened to me a few weeks ago and we had to warn the guy to be more careful as his cut landed on the back of my neck! :-\

ya u gotta be careful, sir brian may put his hand back behind his head hehehe
-
That looks like a great option, especially since you already have the fencing mask and it doesn't require buying a whole extra helmet. Hardened leather should be sufficient; if someone has such a flailing blow at the back of your head as to cause injury through a beefy hardened leather shell, something has gone horribly wrong. And $50 doesn't seem high, the leather looks fairly thick. It's probably $25 in materials alone, between the leather and beeswax.

I wear one of these over my mask:

It's very good, but it's also quite expensive to get in the US. (about $100)

I wrote that I enveloped him! - not gave him a reach-around! ;)

Those look good as well! :) It's great we have a few options. I think I'll go with the hardened leather to see how that works and keep your suggestion as an alternate in case it doesn't work out. I'll be sure to pass on both options to my fellow students @ MASHS!

FYI, Terry will also make just the back part to put on your fencing mask (that's how he originally got started). It's much cheaper, and the turn around time is much faster than his full mask.
-
Didn't know that! Thanks! I'll have to contact him and find out how long the turn around is and how much. :)
-
LOL @ that reacharound
And thank you, Sir Brian, for the lesson...it makes sense now.
