I readily agree that you are onto a most excellent start. Love your choice in great helms as well!  :)
- It is exactly like mine. Have you made your liner yet?

Your helm lined? Or did you use an arming cap? In any case what are you wearing under the maille?

I have not but I am buying an arming cap made for great helms at begining of the new month and if i get that should i make lining inside of the helm also?

Only if the helm still feels loose on your head. I take it you'll wear your coif as well so there may not be a need for a liner at all. :)
Let us know how the new arming cap + coif works as I like having options with my kit as well and I made my liner easily removable. :)

Well last night while wearing my poor mans arming cap (ski mask and a ushanka hat over the coif) my helm was still bobbling a little and my nose was touching the front, I dont have a big nose but either way. When wearing a arming cap should your nose touch and or should the helm wobble at all or should it be snug

It should be snug enough that he doesn't bobble around on your head when moving it side to side or up and down. Mine is also a bit "close" on my nose, so much so that I made a special cushion for my nose that runs between the oculars but narrow enough that it doesn't obstruct my vision. I secure it with the magical medieval velco! ;)

Hmm i was thinking on making some padding on the side of your head above ears incase you get struck in the head and infront like nose and back off head to absorb inpact

I can bring my arming cap and coif to MDRF next time if you want to try it; I'm hoping to armor up if I can get a few tweaks done and the weather cooperates so I will have them with me.

Leganoth, as Sir Brian said, whatever gets it "snug" is what you'll probably want to go with. You can attach padding directly to the helmet if necessary. The "blue cell camping mat" is/was available at Walmart/Outdoor shops and is about $10 for enough to do an entire set of armor with leftovers. It's not period, and it doesn't breathe well at all, but it's a cheap, stable option to start with.

Sounds good to me! :)

Also how would one go about getting dirt/hand prints etc off the helm? I need a new clean, I'm not sure what ive used before, my dad just gave me some metal polisher but it needs proper cleaning

You're gonna need a snug fit with a helm, I fought with a loose fitting helm and it kept sliding around and got annoying, especially when the brim kept blocking my vision. Using an arming cap was the best solution.

For most stuff I use steel wool. Heavy rust gets the buffer  8)

Good start! Have you thought about tailoring your maille? The butted stuff is super-easy to work with, and it's good experience for if you want to modify nicer riveted maille in the future.

You could just cut out a small amount and but the rest together, or just wear some bracers over it to fix the bingo wing problem. They sell metal bracers really cheaply at mercenary's tailor but i'm not sure if they'd be period except maybe for the LATE 13th early 14th century. I plan to do the bracer fix myself till I get icefalcon rings and rivets to tailor my own maille.

Well the only tools you'll need for working with butted maille is a couple of pliers, the patience comes only with practice and fortitude, after all "dealing" with armor is the penance we must all pay for this infatuation of ours.  ;)

Agreed, Sir Brian.  I need to tailor my hauberk to remove the bingo wings...just finding time AND inclination is the issue.

Ulrich, if you're going to try to use bracers as a way of keeping your mail in check, might I suggest some ties - Sir Brian showed me a way to do so, which will bring the mail closer in to your arm and may help with the bracers.  The bracers themselves look as if they should do a good job of keeping the mail down but it doesn't, at least mine did not.  In the course of the day, moving around, lifting your ale the mail just finds a way to slip out.  Plus, with having to wear the bracer looser than normal the weight of it sits on the wrist rather than distributing over the arm that's covered which can get painful as time wears on.

You can get away with 1 pair of pliers, but 2 is better. They can be found at Home Depot for about $3. If you can grind down the rough edge of the face, it will help prevent it from scratching the mail. Butted mail is quick and easy once you get the hang of it. Riveted is a whole other beast.

Try just running a length of lace through the sleeve to tighten it down. If you can still move your arm around in all directions like that, clip the rings the lace went through and just close it back up; you could lace it closed as you slowly close it up with rings. Doesn't have to be done in a day. :)

My maille projects were often done over the course of several days. There's my basic method and tutorial in a post in the Workshop part of the forum. Same method should apply to butted as well.
