Title: The "Albion" sword, by Albion
Post by: Sir Edward on 2011-09-12, 14:32:54

*drool*

Anyone else here remember the old Robin of Sherwood TV series from back in the 80's? The sword that Robin used was called "Albion", and is sort of the unofficial namesake for Albion Swords. It's also what inspired my love for disc pommels and encouraged me to save up my money all year for my first "functional" sword when I was a teen.

The fact that Albion is now making Albion is blowing my mind. I couldn't pass it up. I'll have one before the year is out. :)

That would make a wonderful wedding present for Kat...who could then use it on you first anniversary to cut the saved wedding cake.  ;D

It's a beauty. I don't know where, but I thought I saw an estimated price tag of $2,000 for it; at the intro price it seems like a steal.

There's always that Albion booth at WMAW ... where you'll be for *4* days ... can you resist the temptation for *that* long? ;)

Sir Wolf, can we keep the subjects to edged weapons, please?  I don't own a gun...yet.

Sir James, $940 is an excellent intro price on a piece that's gonna eventually retail for $2k...but that's more than I can afford atm.  Been lookin at Atrims lately.

This thread reminds me...Sir Edward, you mentioned the BBC show Robin Hood...I happened to catch four or five episodes over the weekend, I genuinely liked it.  So much so my wife had to beg me to change the channel (we watched them all in a row lol)...put me to mind of the Merlin series on BBC, had the same feel to it almost.

You don't own guns. Guns own you.

lol, not really. For some reason it just felt right to reply with one of those "in soviet russia..." type responses. :)

Did you catch the newer one or the series from the 80's (with Michael Praed and/or Jason Connery)? I never got into the newer one. The one from the 80's was pure magic.

It was the newer one...think we talked about it in another topic, how he as a recurve horseman's bow and uses a tulwar or some other curved sword (didn't get a good look at it).  I've not seen the one with Jason Connery...pure magic you say?  I'll have to check that out.

Yeah, the first two seasons (fairly short seasons) had Michael Praed as Robin Hood. He was excellent. Jason Connery was brought in for the third season (about the length of the previous two combined) after Michael Praed moved on to other acting opportunities. His portrayal was a bit different. A more quiet reserved version of the character. And they made the switch work pretty well by using two different stories of who he was and where he came from. So it really is a different Robin.

It'll feel a bit slow, after being accustomed to the pace of modern shows, so it takes a few episodes to get hooked. But it's excellent.

Ok, on the list of things to watch...eventually.  Speaking of switching actors, Andy Whitfield, the first Spartacus, passed away on Sunday, succumbing to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma after an 18 month battle.  God grant him peace.

The 'new' Spartacus is shaping up to be underwhelming, in a word.  Saw some prelim clips of him and I am so unimpressed right now...

Sir Wolf, you may be my brother but right now, you are not my friend...why suggest such...I'm dangerous enough as it is...put a gun in my hands...and everyone had better worry just a little bit.  LOL

Man that would be an awesome sword to either put on a wall or hang it up on the door.   :D

When they finally brought it, they didn't even knock. I looked outside and there it was... but sure enough it took all day.

Pictures soon to come.

Nothing is forgotten. Nothing is ever forgotten.

"It is Albion. One of the Seven Swords of Wayland the Smith. Charged by him with the powers of light and darkness."

What's amusing is that I'm totally geeking out over this, but I don't know how many folks were fans of the same show. Most of the people I talk to never saw Robin of Sherwood back in the '80s. Some of the younger crowd wasn't alive yet or old enough.

For me, it was highly influential in my early sword collecting. I was a teen when it was on. And of course "Albion" was at the center stage, since it was Robin's sword, given to him to fight evil. Something that was unique about this particular version of Robin Hood was that while it did throw in some magic/fantasy, it was extremely light and infrequent, and held true to some of the less commonly know (today) mythology from that part of the world. The sword was supposedly made by Wayland the Smith (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayland_the_smith) as one of the seven swords of Wayland, charged with both the powers of light and darkness (thus it's up to the person who uses it). It was given to Robin by Herne the Hunter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herne_the_Hunter), or rather a man who embodies that persona.

Like I said, there's not a lot of fantasy magic type stuff, but there's some. The first episode's villain is a sorcerer. In the third season they find camelot, and there's an episode with some devil worshippers who reunite all seven swords and attempt to bring Lucifer into the world with them. And that's about it, other than the more mystical scenes with Herne giving advice to Robin. Otherwise most episodes deal with the typical sorts of things, the villainy of the sheriff, Richard the Lionheart coming through town, visits from prince/king John, a run-in with some Templars, and so on.

By today's standards it's a bit dated, of course. But it had its own unique style, and didn't fall into the trap of making everyone look like they stepped out of Lord of the Rings or other fantasy movies. It was more convincing of being a period reproduction, even with its costume armor. :)

Anyway, here are the stats:

Overall Length = 38 ¾ inches  (98.42 cm)
Blade Length = 31 inches  (78.74 cm)
Hilt Length = 7 ¾ inches  (19.68 cm)
Grip Length = 5 inches  (12.7 cm)
Blade Thickness at base = 0.24 inches  (0.61 cm)
Blade Width at base = 2 inches  (5.08 cm)
Guard Width  = 7 ¼ inches  (18.41 cm)
Weight = 3.28 lbs  (1.49 kg)
Center of Gravity = 2 ¾ inches from guard  (7 cm)

Wow, that is much more bronze/brass than the other pictures look. Very nice! The classic black wire wrap w/bronze fittings reminds me of the 'classic' excalibur.

I think that can be arranged. :)

It handles surprisingly well for being a "movie sword", but it's definitely on the heavy side. The blade is fairly thick at the base, and there's no fuller. The heavy pommel and a good distal taper do help to keep it balanced, and the center of gravity is actually fairly close to the guard. So you don' t notice the weight until you start swinging it.

Very interesting, I sort of figured that would be the case given with the specification you gave.  But I am surprised none the less.   :)

That is a good look on you, Sir Edward.  What material are your pants made of?  Is that leather?  Love the sword, but you'd known that would happen.

At the faire, those tights were referred to as "dragon skin". As to what it really is, I'm not sure. It's a stretchy, patterned fabric with a rough leather-like appearance. Unfortunately the vendor at MDRF can't get it anymore, so I'm lucky I got it when I did. If I didn't have those, I'd probably have looked into some brown wool chausses, or joined hose, or something like that. Or leather chausses. :)

This is the "woodsman" outfit I put together a number of years ago, with a Robin Hood sort of look in mind. As soon as I ordered "Albion", I knew I'd be doing a photo-shoot like this as soon as it arrived.

On Saturday I was watching another episode of the show, which had some more close-ups, including one of those shots where they intentionally reflect the lights back at the camera to make the sword glowy. So I went and took this picture, and of course enhanced it a little in photoshop. The quote below is from the scene in question:

"Herne's son is my master. I can not slay him."
