Title: My project this month (Warning bad drawing here)
Post by: Leganoth on 2011-09-01, 05:17:21
This is my project this month, I will be using paper mache to do the curved parts then somthing for the feather looking items at michaels i find friday. Anyone know a good magnet to use to attatch it to the helmet that wont let it move alot but able to remove

Ideas? Suggestions?

earth magnets come in various sizes, shapes and strengths.

...however I think the most difficult aspect of your project maybe finding a reliable method of securing the magnets to the 'wings'.  :-\

Yep, if you're going with magnets instead of bolting it on, you absolutely will want "Rare Earth" magnets, for the strength. Just be aware that physically they're easy to break, so be gentle with them while assembling (which can be hard when they're sticking to the side of the helmet, or each other, very strongly).

You can use all sorts of material to make your crest. Feathers could work. Leather, paper mache, and wood are all options too. The nice thing about paper mache is that if done right, you can sand it, glue it, build the magnets right into it, polyurethane it, paint it, and have the end result not obvious that it was paper mache (for that I'd use newspaper for the base structure and something soft and textured like Viva paper towels for the surface).

Historically they were most often leather or wood, (such as "cuir bouilli (http://www.personal.utulsa.edu/~marc-carlson/leather/hl.html)", which is boiled leather and is very hard), but if you plan to make it yourself, the paper mache route might be easiest, or otherwise stitch something together with stiff leather.

I've always liked the winged crests depicted in some of the historical artwork. It has me wanting to make a new crest for my helm. I probably won't have time this season though. It might be a better off-season project for me.

But they must be DRAGON wings Sir Edward!  :)

Oh yes, indeed so. I'm envisioning upright dragon wings (like that photo) on my great helm.

It’s been a while since I read the stories but in the second book I believe, it described how the wings of his dragon helm could be pulled down and tied together to enclose his face! (I always visualized that to resemble a Corinthian Helmet.)  :)

Yeah i was thinking that too, but anyways what magnets do you suggest or any other ways of holding the wings to the helm

I've only seen them in round.  They come in various strengths.  I got mine at Hobby Lobby.  I used four 1/2 inch #10 strength ones to secure my griffen crest.  I drilled some 1/2 inch holes into the underside of the crest, packed in a little plumbers epoxy putty, and then shoved the magnets in the holes.  Haven't had any trouble with them pulling off the crest.  For wings, I'd try two 1/4 inch magnets per side (since the helm is curved).  As for stability, with #10 rare earth magnets, I practically have to pry my crest off!

So this would be good? http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=DX04 (http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=DX04)

Each of these discs has a pull force of over 25 lbs.

Holy magnetic force Batman!

Hmm i see, how strong are they? Do they hold well?

Very strong.  I literally have to pry my crest off the helm.

At the risk of seeming too obtuse, the helm you intend to use the magnets on isn't stainless steel right?  ???

That is an excellent question...and a valid one at that.  No matter how strong the magnet, if the helm is stainless you won't get any sticking going on.

A second magnet glued inside the helmet *might* take care of that; seems like the magnetic force that strong could work through steel, but I'm sure at a cost to it's potency. Great point, Sir Brian.

That could work, but the adhesive holding the inner magnet would become the weakest point but worth trying. :)

My helm is carbon steel with a brass cross
