Version 2.0 of the SMF forum software has been released, so I'm considering upgrading to it in the near future. One downside is that the theme we're using probably won't work with it, so we may be stuck with a generic theme or I may have to quickly pick out a new one. I didn't build the theme myself, I took one from the SMF site and modified it a little.
I'm currently investigating how the upgrade process works. Supposedly I just upload the files and run a script, and it converts the forum data and code.
-
WOW thats a huge difference in forum software
-
I'm still working on it. The theme is one I downloaded. It started out based around red, so I'm shifting it back to blue, etc. Some features may not be working yet either. I need to re-add the dictionary, for instance.
-
The Knight Pages broke with the upgrade as well. I have it working again, as far as displaying is concerned. However the SSO stuff is still broken, so you can't make updates until I get that straightened out.
Also, if you guys have any recommendations, let me know. I'm still messing with the overall look, making sure things work, etc.
-
Embedded youtube videos are still broken too. Lots to fix.
-
The new software format is amazing! You did a fine job Sir Edward!
-
Embedded youtube videos are still broken too. Lots to fix.
OK, embedding youtube works, but only with a raw URL. All the stuff we already posted with youtube tags aren't embedding.
-
Wow, we had like half a dozen spammers try to sign up while I've been working on this stuff. I got the verification questions and CAPTCHAs reconfigured now.
-
Still on the to-do list:
- Do something about the youtube-tagged links in existing messages, so they can embed again, hopefully. If not, then we'll fix some by hand here and there.
- Get the mouse-hover dictionary working.
- Fix the Knight Pages SSO, so people can update again.
- Re-add all the links we used to have to the links page, Knight Pages, etc.
- Move the search box so it doesn't overlap your photo.
As an aside, the new video embedding will work with more than just youtube. All you need to do is paste the URL. It's automatic.
Anything else you've noticed that's broken, missing, or out of place?
-
I like this *so* much better, and it works in Chrome, too. Well done, Sir Edward!
My PHP/MySQL is piff, but I can probably come up with some update statements to update the old posts to fix the {youtube} embed code.
My CSS and HTML are pretty strong. I can give a go at the search box and adding the links page content back in (if you give me the old content), shouldn't be too tough.
-
Actually the video embedding mod came with a script to auto-update the content, but I'm not sure I trust it. I'm nervous about sweeping changes across the content. I can always code something myself. I do perl/mysql coding every day.
I may tweak some of the images that the forum uses. Some parts are darker in color than I intended. Otherwise it looks pretty good.
Anyway, the CSS/HTML is very much a trial-and-error thing for me. :)
I'm thinking a separate nav-bar for the older links would look good. The problem with how I had it before was that I really couldn't add much before all the buttons would collide if you had a smaller browser window.
These are the links:
The Code: /code.html
Links: /links.html
Knight Info: /introduction.html
Knight Pages: /knights

Knight pages should be working now. They changed the names of all the variables in the forum database. Hopefully I caught them all in my script.

OK, this one is actually fixed now too. I had to resolve a conflict, but got both mods working. So the youtube tags work, and so do raw URLs.
-
Get the mouse-hover dictionary working.
OK, this is working now too. The mod that's available is for one of the earlier release candidates for SMF 2.0, so it didn't apply cleanly. The installer also didn't add the database table-name prefix that the forum uses. But I've manually fixed these things, and wrote a script to copy all of the old definitions I added into the database.

I'm liking the new version! Thanks Sir Edward for all the hard work!
btw at some point our order page needs our newly chosen motto depicted.
;)

Hear, hear, Sir Brian!

That's still on the "to do list".

It's easier than that. The link is all the way up in the upper-right, next to your avatar photo. I'm also planning on moving/adding a link for that in a more obvious place.
The "unread posts" buttons on the right side only show you new posts in each section. The one up next to your avatar shows you new posts for the whole forum.
-
and so it is! i didnt see it up there.
-
I see it now, thanks!
-
So I go camping in the woods with my family and upon my return everything has changed! I swear I was only gone a few days. Well done! Thank you for the time and effort it must have taken for this conversion.
-
Great work Sir Ed.

OK, I moved the "show unread" links (duplicate copy, actually), moved the search box, re-added the links bar up top.
In addition to getting the glossary and youtube embedding working again, as well as the new registration anti-spam stuff.
Anything else you can think of? I think we're basically all set.
-
I think we are good to go now, Knight Commander.
-
Better than ever, Sir Edward! I used to have to turn on my windows computer just to check PMs. With the new interface, it all works right in Chrome, and looks more "polished" too. :D
-
I turned on the calendar, in case anyone wants to use it.
Also, the new forum has web-spider tracking. So the list of online users should show when one of the major search engines is accessing stuff, instead of just showing up as a guest.

We are going to have throw you a fete, Sir Edward- for advancing us further into the technological terror that is the World Wide Web. Or was that the Death Star?
