i stared patterning out my armour. i currently have a Merc Tailer set of knees and a pair of GDFB padded chausis w/ attached mail on the lower legs. I also already have fanless elbow cops. (they need a good cleaning but I have them.)
i am still on the fence about helmets. i am thinking either the GDFB:
klappvisor and leaving the visor off
(bascinet) http://www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=AB0427&name=Klappvisier+Bascinet+Helmet
or the
secret helmet, making the aventail come up higher.
http://www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=AB0371&name=14th+Century+Secret+Helmet
I plan on getting a (coif) http://www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=AB2550&name=Chain+Mail+Coif+-+Wedge+Riveted-Solid+Ring+-+Flattened+ring+-+Mild+Steel coif and making it into an aventail due to price and I like the alt row riveted and solid ring construction. it matches my hauberk.
also i will be wearing my new GDFB gauntlets.
hmmmmm a new surcoat is needed... sigh.
-
I will be watching this one with great interest! Am I to assume from the patterns that you're going to make your own arms? Can't wait for pics! BTW, I vote for the secret helm with bigger aventail.
EDIT: Of course you're making your own plates, that's what the pattern's for! I can't see a thing in this helmet....
-
Sweet! It would be great if you could still wear your great helm over your secret helm! :)
-
That is not a secret or half helm it is a form of bascinet. They are really common in the Romance of Alexander manuscript from 1338-1347 and there are several extant ones that only cover that much of the head too; you could wear a great helm over it but often men went open faced in artwork. My SCA armor is based on armor from that era.
Technically the legs should be all maille with the padded cuisses, demi greave, and knees over them.
-
yaya i know James. I'm cheatin till I can afford a full mail chausis from icefalcon.
i think i will trim back the greave a bit. the way i have it looks too wide and not scalloped on the sides like in the effiegy.
i jsut called it a secret helemt cause thats what GDFB listed it as. the sides really should be about an inch or so longer but i think it will work for what i need it for.
i think i will punch out the brow rivets,
put on the coif.
put on the helmet.
slidesmaller bolts from inside to outside and put washers on them to hold in place.
then mark and cut the top of the coif out.
and that should do it. may have to get the wife's help a bit.
-
Woo hoo, I like it...as I'm about to embark on a similar quest, albeit a slightly later period.
-
I am likely to be updating my kit to be full on living history quality next year for a special secret project.
I have the maille I need to make a new COP, greaves, and hand quilded arming cote and cuisses.
-
That helm from GDFB is actually a secret helm, it`s origional name is a cervelliere" if you need to look it up. The cervelliere developed into the bascinet during the early 14th century.
Possibly the one you`re after, Sir Wolf, is an open faced bascinet like this one;

I have both of the above helms and the cervelliere is made to fit tight to the maille coif and also under the great helm or "Pembridge helm"

That's a Windlass offering...do you find it suitable for the purpose, Sir Gerard? I do like the look of it.
-
Sir Edward has the same one too
-
So he does...at least, I noticed it in one of his pics. Sir Edward, do you like yours? I'm thinking of getting one...
-
Sir William, the combination of arming cap, maille coif, cervelliere and great helm is something I think I might have tried once for combat, never again, the weight is unbearable lol.
I do put them together for show and tell now and agai, when I have the room in my arming chest to transport it all. ;)
The open faced bascinet with aventail is very nice to wear if not a little weighty on the neck at first. A chin strap is a must as the bascinet can ride down and cut at the bridge of the nose. :P

I actually tried Sir Edward's set on shortly after he received it and found it fairly comfortable but a bit heavy. :)
-
Is it that much heavier than your greathelm?
-
It's doubly heavy since they made the aventail pretty weighty too. But it's pretty comfortable and surprisingly good for an MRL offering (which explains why they had put it on clearance).
-
Don't they always? The good stuff always gets put on clearance and then subsequently discontinued.

You are a machine, Sir Wolf! What kind of steel did you use?
-
18 gauge mild steel
-
Looking good, Sir Wolf!
-
thanks. i am hoping to have more done by tomorrow night. didn't get anything done today cause of work, then a family Reunion and then i helped Sir ace work on his library
-
18ga? Do you fight in your rig? How well does 18ga stand up to full-tilt waster fighting?
-
ive not fought in it. theres no one near me that even knows what "medieval" is hehehhe

Nice! Looking good so far!
-
Great work, Sir Wolf!
-
Wow! That's coming along really good! What color is your surcoat going to be or are you not going to wear one?
-
thanks!
i am hoping to make a grey/black split to match my shield. although i am uncertain that splits are period during the 1340s so i need to do some research. (anyone got pictures of a split color?) if not it will be black. maybe i can try to find a lion to apllieca on the front of it. (Sir John how did you do your gold lion?) the surcoat will be shorter in teh front and knee length in the back as effigies show, with splits under the armpits that can tie up.
-
Once the surcoats started getting really short, it became more common to put your heraldry on them. So you can pattern it after your arms if you want, I think.
-
Looks good Sir Wolf..although I do not recall your arms being so long! ;)
-
HAH hehehe. they fit pretty well. although i may need to cut down the upper cannon a little bit. i had originally made them with the idea of using a round spaulder but instead I used a set that i had previously made out of laziness ;)
i need to point and strap the stuff yet and then show it on the arming coat.

Wolf
Do you have a copy of Osprey's Crecy book? I got a copy in the mail yesterday and the illustration are really good. I snagged if for $5 on abe books.
Also if you want to go with a plain cerveliere Mad Matt sells a good one for SCA use for $150, I bet you could bet him to knock a few bucks off buy just getting the top without slats and a bar grill. You can either wear it over a coif or add and aventail:

-
Just a note on Mad Matt's Armory, when I last spoke w/him he had told me he wasn't taking any more commissions. After some discourse he agreed to fit me up an arm and leg harness, or whatever it was I wanted, but it had to come out to about $500 before he would consider it. Since you might know him personally, he may waive that for you.
All I originally wanted was some leg armor. LOL
-
I like it so far Sir Wolf, you have the patience of a saint and more time than one too by the looks of it lol.

-
Sir Wolf, you have made very nice progress thus far! Could you please share some insight into your edge curls and rolls? Are you using special tools and/or techniques for them as they look very well executed? 8)
-
So where we at with this, Sir Wolf. Will you be getting knighted in this rig?
-
i haven't gotten any further to be honest. we'll see if i get anything at this military antique show saturday, if not maybe I'll pick up the bassinet and aventail

Quite the babyface, Sir wolf, quite the babyface...

-

Make one of each so you can wear whatever you're in the mood for, of course!
-
but yeah i was thinking that, but i dont have a basenet or gdfb secret helm. so the 1340s would be off. :(

I know! My goal is to invent time travel and switch me and his baby strollers in the hospital... ;D
-
I like the way you think, Sir Nathan- be the source! ;)
