pictures to come after work.
when i opened the box, and opened the 100s of yards of plastic and paper i was like oooooooooo then hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
they are not bad for the price (under 100 at kult of athena) and even better for me FREE!! but they do have some aesthetic issues. the fingers are not rolled or dished enough. the knuckle area isn't as well. the fingers are sewn to the leather gauntlet liners but there is a whole lot of excess that needs to be trimmed. they will work well for my kit and would encourage others that can't afford 500 dollar pair of gauntlets to get a set. i am thinking of removing the brass work but not 100% sold on that idea.
they fit my smaller hands well and the fingers move pretty good. i can grip a sword a lot better than i can in the mail mittens that's for sure. :) they are also cut in a way that allows for a lot of wrist movement. Hal from Therion was great to deal with and the shipping from him was done very professionally. he even sent me a Spanish coin that looks like a remake of a doubloon.

Huh...might have to keep these in mind should I decide to go this route. I probably will, eventually.
-
Would they be worthy to fight with Sir Wolf?
-
Sir Brian, if I may - I wouldn't trust my fingers to them - especially with your record thus far. ;) The gauntlets I wore at VARF with my kit were the same ones Sir Wolf just received. I had one finger break the thread sewn to the leather tab, and my total time wearing them is maybe 2 hours. Maybe with reworked (or replaced) fingers they would be good for combat, but not as they come. Or maybe if your last name is "Knievil" and broken bones are normal.
They are certainly nice as costume armor for the price, though.
Congrats, Sir Wolf.

Thanks Sir James! I suppose it would be best to stick with my leather clamshell gaunts when practicing WMA! ;)

They do look great! Are you done stitching the gloves on yet? ;)
-
but but nooooooooooo i just got DUKE NUKEM FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!
-
Oh no...not Duke. I got so tired of waiting that I am no longer a fan. LOL
Let us know how it is, Wolf. Me, I'm finishing up Dragon Age: Awakening and debating on AC: Brotherhood or Dragon Age II (the first iteration and expansion are well written and a lot of fun to play).
Then there's the new Escalation pack just put out for CoD...

heehheeh

I must agree with Sir Wolf and James. One of my comrades in arms, Sir David de Jarponville used a pair of these for a few events and really was never happy with them. The fit seemed uncomfortable and the fingers gave way quite early into their life.
They look fantastic though ;)

Sir Wolf, lets see you fully dressed to kill, brother!
Sir Gerard, I just saw your comrade, Sir David, undergo a medieval divorce? That was hilarious!

Has anyone fought with these? Reason I ask is my leather clamshell gauntlets are irritating me. They are either losing pop rivets or the few solid rivets are causing me blisters on my knuckles (better padded insert gloves seem to have remedied that issue though). I lost another rivet last night forcing me to use by worn out lacrosse gloves and wouldnt you know it I took a hit on the thumb, so now I have a Toton thumbnail.
I noticed that the prices on these are really tempting the only differences I can tell with these is the Milanese is $20.00 more and has a palm strap, for twenty bucks I can add my own palm strap! ;)

Sir Brian, I have a pair of early mitten gauntlets similar to those. The only main difference is that the "hourglass" cuff doesn`t go all the way round the inside of the wrist, this seems to give good flexability. I swear by my mittens for comfort, fit, protection and low maintainence.
This isn`t a bad photograph of them

Thank you for your timely endorsement Sir Gerard! I think I'll buy them while they are still in stock and on sale! :)
-
I've seen some like those before, think they were called demi's because they didn't go all the way around. Can't hurt flexibility, that's for sure and the protection's there, unless you go around with your arms fixed as if you're constantly confused or sheepish. LOL
-
demi gauntlets only cover the back of the hand and the wrist. they have no fingers. most of the times they are 2 piece but some times they are 1 piece.

Woohoo! I got the e-mail this morning that my new steel mitten gauntlets are on the way and will be delivered tomorrow! I hope it's delivered early enough for me to add an additional palm strap if it needs it so I can wear them to WMA training tomorrow night! ;D

Sorry, I only just saw this now. I have these as "loaner" gauntlets, and they are only a step above worthless for any kind of blossfechten. They have poor mobility and the rivits constantly pop out with pieces falling off. The only reason I haven't just thrown them away is because they will work for newer students to start learning harnisfechten, where they remain in the half-sword position and don't need much finger dexterity. Even there, these are not great for that, but they are better than nothing... and they encourage the students to buy their own. ;)
If you're looking for gauntlets for WMA training, the sad fact of the matter is that you simply have to spend the money. The reason gauntlets like these are cheap is because someone didn't put the time and effort into making them worthwhile. If you don't want to spend the money, then you need to go with something like lacrosse glove. But there's no such thing as cheap but good gauntlets.
-
i am wondering if we could fix them for you Das Bill. putting in solid rivets with washers and making "sliding room" in the rivet hole if needed for better articulation.
-
Well one favorable endorsement and one unfavorable endorsement. ??? Since they are already purchased and in route I might as well try them out and see if they offer any better protection than my lacrosse gloves which is what I’ve been wearing the times I sustained notable hand injuries. I’ve found the leather clamshell gauntlets I have offers enough mobility but the shoddy pop rivet construction are insufficient to withstand much punishment. Yet for the expensive gauntlets I just repaired a friend’s pair of these MT fingered gauntlets, (http://http://www.merctailor.com/catalog/images/fingered%20gauntlets%20thumb.jpg)
And then tried them out on my pell and found them no more advantageous in mobility. They were comfortable and the articulation was excellent but not worth the extra expenditure at this juncture of my financial standing IMO. Perhaps someday my situation will improve and I would be able to afford the luxury of what would be deemed adequate gauntlets for WMA, then again I could also awaken from my stupor and abandon such frivolous pursuits altogether. :-\
-
Wake up from the stupor? Heaven forbid! W/out this, life is most mundane for me...I won't say joyless, but definitely mundane.
-
I suppose the answer is that unless you can afford to have a pair of gauntlets tailor made to your specifications, then there is a certain amount of pot luck with ordering off the peg on the net. Ideally you should try before you buy.

I thought he said he had similar ones, but not the same ones? I assumed that meant gauntlets with the same design, but not the GDFB ones?

I think you'll find these to only be slightly better in that regard, sadly.

Well, my friend Jorg has a saying: "I'm too poor to buy cheap safety equipment." If you spend a hundred here, a hundred there, you end up in the long run spending the same as if you'd bought nice ones in the first place. Now, having said that, I fully appreciate just how expensive armor is, which is why things like lacrosse gloves are a great intermediary device. You might also want to look into plastic gauntlets, which are much cheaper than steel. (such as the ones made by Egg Armory) But if you want steel specifically, there's simply no choice besides expensive.
-
Or just get the hit that Zweihammer Armoury sells, or the gauntlets from Bokalo Armourys.
