To split, or not to split? Not being able to test, I have no idea! I'm trying to find a pair of bifurcated gauntlets so that I can finally have some hand protection. Not a big fan of mittens, as they tend to be too loose on me, yet individually fingered gauntlets tend to get too wound up on my hands, hence why I'm thinking bifurcated. Does anyone have any experience with them/know where to find some?

Sadly, I haven't had a chance to try them. I don't know of anyone who makes them either.
But now I'm thinking we need to convince Bill to get a pair, so he'll look more like a Velociraptor. :)

wow those look wild, wonder how they are while handling a blade? :-\

Positively demonic they look- I like them! Maybe Allan could help - MT I mean?
-
I've seen a set on ArmourArchive for sale before, though I don't remember who made them. They were called the "ninja turtle gauntlets", and growing up watching TMNT as a teenager, that's exactly what they remind me of.

Have you asked Eric of Zweihammer armoury or Jackie of Shamrock armoury? What about Icefalcon?

These look like a great compromise between fingered and mitten gauntlets.......Is there any historical reference to their use??

Talk about obscure! Doing a search for Bifurcated Gauntlets pulls up this very thread as the third result!
As for historical context, they were apparently used around the 15th century, most notably by Charles V (http://www.myarmoury.com/feature_ana_charlesv.html) of Spain.

Have you tried posting on the Armour Archive? There's lots of SCAdians over there and some of them may have combat experience with bifurcated gauntlets.
(edit to add)
I would also try the myArmoury forum. Many very experienced and knowledgeable people post there.

Jiří Klepač made a pair and his work is fantastic. I don't screw around when it comes to hand protection and I would trust his work:

If I was going to buy a pair this is who I would go to.

Those look like they could deliver a fierce blow...I like'm.
James, that link...WOW.

I've heard many, many good things about Jiri. And nothing bad. He makes some VERY droolworthy gear.

I've added him to the links page.
