Title: GARF
Post by: Sir Brian on 2011-04-01, 13:32:23
Well it looks like a change of plans for the wife and me concerning our first Renfaire of the season. Rosemary has been following some of the discussions on some other renfaire forums and the general consensus is an adamant refusal to support that faire this year as a way of protest for the way nearly all the performers had been ripped off the previous year by the faire owners. They are also supposed to be at a new location this year which is reputedly lacking in running water and electricity. It is all a bit tragic really because that faire had a lot of promise and is one of the primary events that those noble members of the Knightly Order of the Fiat Lux are/were a big attraction. I do not know if they will be attending NCRF this year or not.  :-\

So we decided that since we’ll be going through the expense of traveling and hotels we might as well go to a faire we know will be happening with a good turnout. Besides we missed it last year!  ;)

That is a shame to hear...you'd think the faire owners would know a bit more about chivalrous and just behaviour than their modern day counterparts, but I should not be surprised I guess.

It is even worse than we’ve “heard” about. My wife’s FB friend who is working the beer tent sent her pictures and it is so sad. They have like only five vendors besides the food and beer tents. They do have a jousting troop there but not much of anything else. I had such high hopes for that fair when they changed their venue to the larger area of the golf course, it is such a shame really.  :(

That sounds like it might be on its way out of the circuit, then.  THAT would also be a shame.

Yep, NCRF's problems run deep. They recently auctioned off a bunch of physical assets (tables, benches, etc), and attempted to sell items from their storage that belonged to some of the hired acts, as well as tables that belonged to the fairgrounds.

I don't know how much of it is unscrupulous, versus just being clueless. Either way, it's really a shame.

Eek! I hope none of the vendors or performers lose their personal property because of that. :(

Kinda reminds me that 2 local Faire's went bad due to poor management & decisions.

The Reno Celtic Faire was held in downtown Reno for years in July as part of the City of Reno's ARTown. Then they got in a huff with the ARTown folks, and moved the Faire to a hard to get to location some 5 miles away & changed the date to 1st weekend in October. Which is the same weekend as many other events including a few tourney's and a bigger Fair in Grass Valley, CA. So they ended up losing like half of their vendors, and performers (like the SCA).

Valhalla Ren Faire is slowly coming back. It has the advantage of happening in South Lake Tahoe in June, so there are plenty of tourists & foot traffic, but the made many, many mistakes in the past like charging performers for tickets and saying that no one could sleep on site.

NCRF or GARF...or both?

Assuming I haven't misunderstood, I believe Sir Brian was saying they were going to go to GARF instead of NCRF, because of NCRF's problems. I haven't heard of any issues about GARF.

I misread then... I thought he was saying the GARF was going under...missed the NCRF reference.

Yes it is NCRF that's dying a slow and painful death. GARF is our destination for their opening weekend, which is when I'll debut my overhauled kit. Hopefully I'll have those last remaining pieces before then! The 1/2 gauntlets are going to be very close!  :-\

Oh yes, and be sure to get lots of pictures of your kit. We have to update your photoshop poster. :)

For some strange reason I’m reading a veiled threat in that comment!

(or else I’ll just update the photoshop poster with you in the mumu!)   :D

Why not?  I thought you looked smashing, Sir Brian!  Stand you an ale I would!  lol

I think we should compile a list of "Good" renn faires to circuit.  You know?
Title: Re: GARF
Post by: Sir William on 2011-04-15, 16:13:16
That's a good idea...maybe a quick synopsis of what each offers, weapon/no-weapon, pets/no pets, booze/no booze, that sorta thing, the important stuff.  I'd put in a 'percentage of cleavage'  but umm...that wouldn't be very chivalrous would it?

Compile one complete list and sticky it to the appropriate subforum would be swell.

That reminds me, I didn't compile the faires dates list I usually do each spring. Does anyone find those useful?

Such would be useful....
Title: Re: GARF

They would definitely be useful.

If it's worth the time, I could set up a database-based page on the Order site that shows the faires in a table, that you could filter by weapon/no weapon, dates, acts, etc, if someone is willing to compile a list and send it to me.

Yes that would be very cool!

I haven't looked for this year's starting dates, but here's the thread with the list I compiled last year, if that would be useful as a starting point:

http://modernchivalry.org/forum/index.php/topic,520.0.html (http://modernchivalry.org/forum/index.php/topic,520.0.html)

As an aside, it looks like the dictionary feature interferes with clicky URLs there. Might have to look into that.

Sir Brian,

You appear to be at GARF in your updated kit photographs.  Is it true the fair season has begun down south?! :o

We are expecting snow later today in central Minnesota. :(  Good thing my first event is indoors this comming weekend!

I think it would be eminently useful to have such a database...and especially with weapon/no-weapon policies.

Yes this past weekend was opening weekend for GARF and they not only had perfect weather they had an excellent turn out! There was even a 15 minute backup on Sunday prior to the opening gate! Saturday (armor day for me) was partially cloudy with temperatures in the mid to high 60’s with a very refreshing breeze. Sunday was about 10 – 15 degrees warmer with less breeze. I did meet another armored knight on Sunday who had an excellent harness from MT. I told him about our little but growing forum so hopefully he will stop by and join us!  :)

I've got a rough one going that I started on my personal site, but I need some help filling in the info. I'll show the same info on the Order site when I get a chance, and it all comes from the same database so they'll both be updated in one spot but viewable from two.

Shoot me a PM if you can fill in some of the blanks or have more to add - I haven't had time to click through a lot of links to check for info.

I made a small tweak to the dictionary code so that other thread's links are clickable now.
