Sir Brian has just placed third in the synthetic longsword event at Longpoint 2014!!! Congratulations!!
-
Huzzah!!
-
Sweet bananas!
Well done Sir Brian. :)
-
So that explains Richard Marsden being all beat up. ;)
Congrats Brian! :)
-
Thank you all! It was an awesome event and I witnessed some of the most incredible fighters. It was truly an honor to be among such folks dedicated to resurrecting these lost martial arts, in fact I dare say those arts are no longer lost and is well on its way to becoming more renowned. :)

all finger nails intact?
-
oooo nice! You probably fought some of my group from Triange Sword Guild...Ben I think was in the finals for steel and Casper did synthetic I think...hope you guys had a blast!
-
all finger nails intact?
Yes right up to this mornings coaching/dueling class with the Live steel champion Axel Petterson. In the last duel the same kid that gave me my only defeat in the first round pool got my index finger pretty good but otherwise I dominated him...had to get my 'backs' on the kid. In the next year or so he'll likely mop the floor with me! ;)
-
Awesome! Congratulations, Sir Brian! ;D
-
Congratulations Sir Brian! Sorry I missed it. :o
-
The video of all the finals are suppose to be uploaded in a week or two.
I can't wait because Sir Edward and I missed most of the finals since we were
squires for Jess Finley and Sean Hayes getting armored up for their harnischfechten
demonstration at the awards dinner. :)
-
Huzzah Sir Brian!! :) Did you leave a green trademark upon the fallen??

Huzzah Sir Brian!! :) Did you leave a green trademark upon the fallen??
No but I did get some compliments on my kit in that I was very 'green' which convinced me they really should have a best dressed category at these events as I may be a serious contender! ;)

Here is a picture of my first match in the elimination round against an awesome fighter Michaelangelo Reina, I'm still not exactly sure if he had made an attack against my blade while I was preparing my own attack or what but it was a beautiful disarm. If I recall I actually grabbed his blade in a futile attempt to stop him from giving me the coup de grace. :)
** update **
Angel posted a youtube video on his FB page.

I really got a break when he accidentially trip. I would have definitely lost if he didn't have that mishap.
-
Wow great bout - sorry I missed that. Congrats again, Sir Brian.
Hope to make it next year for sure.
-
Congratulations Sir Brian...well played...makes me want to do some live steel stuff and maybe get back into armor!!!

Wow, I remember the disarm, but I didn't see what happened. Looking at the video, it looks like he just was trying to wind around it quickly, so it was probably just very unexpected, resulting in lost grip.
BTW, Brian's "best 2 out of 3" fights for 3rd place start 1:52:20 in the video (link below will go to the right time index). It looks like the audio is horribly out of sync. Plus the video gets jerky at time. Hopefully we'll see more individual-fight videos get posted as well.

Edit: FYI-- As I stated above, the fights were "2 out of 3", so when you see Brian win the first bout, keep watching. It gets really intense, down to the end of the final bout with tied score, and multiple "sudden deaths". :) (that's not a spoiler, anymore than the thread's title is... lol)

Edelson looks like he should be waiting my table in that bowtie.

Congrats Sir Brian, it is no surprise to me to see your skill recognized. :)

Michael Forrest, Brian's opponent in one of the matches, used to run the HEMA group out here btw.
Noble Science Academy: Michael-Forrest (red) vs Sean (white)- 2011 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWexmx_nLpM#)
He seems to have improved quite a bit in the last 3 years. :)
-
Sir Brian, Congratulations indeed.
I just have one thought though, "Three cheers for Sir Thumbs!!! " now that nickname is going to stick unless changed to the more accurate "Sir Green Thumbs".
Again Congratulations
Timothy

On that note ... Sir Brian deserves to be honored in song. I shall use the melody of Greensleeves with a little more upbeat tempo and rename it "Green-thumbs". ;D

Yeah Sir Edward and I had a chance to talk with Mike the next day and he is really a super nice guy. What was cool at the awards dinner was Mike Edelson announcing Mike Forrest’s completion of the HEMA Alliance’s Instructor Certification, so definitely congratulations to Mike for being one of the first few instructors in obtaining this new certification. :)

They posted the statistics from Longpoint 2014. The stats clearly show that you dont have to win EVERY match to advance or place, just win the RIGHT matches. ;)

What I find interesting is how the indicator scoring is calculated. It's weighted quite a bit on wins/losses of course, but takes a lot of other things into account.
I came in last in my pool, and my indicator score looks awful. I was rusty, no denying that. But I also tied for second place in my pool for points scored, and came in second for blows delivered, and had the highest exchanges. My problem was that all my points were getting countered (lots of doubles and afterblows in both directions), and I was getting a lot of low-score hits (arms and legs, frequently).
In most of the other pools, there was someone who got utterly destroyed. I think my pool was probably a little more balanced in skill levels (with one somewhat more advanced combatant, of course, who went on to be defeated by Brian later). :)

Sir Brian and Sir Edward scored 8 points on the team score.
Body & Blade scored none.
Sir Brian referred me to Body & Blade, as they are near me.
Conclusion: Even if I take classes, Sir Brian will continue to trounce me soundly. :)

Not necessarily so Sir James! I believe Jake from Body & Blade was the only representative from his club and he only competed in the steel LS which had some seriously skilled competitors. He is actually quite skilled and knowledgeable. :)
