It turns out we're doing birthday stuff for me on Saturday. I keep forgetting about this one since I've never actually made it to one of the VAF tournaments. :) If it weren't so late in the day, I could probably do both.

I wouldn't be participating, but might be able to go as a spectator, if they allow that?

I think that's OK. They have seating up at the front of the facility.

Well, my birthday thing isn't starting til 7, but it's an hour away from there. Maybe if I just make a point of leaving at 6, I could still go? Let me think on this.

They've got more than a couple seats- I'd say at least 20, at the front.  I might be able to slide through as a spectator.

OK, I talked to Bill tonight, and it looks like I should be able to go. He said he'd be surprised if it went beyond 2 hours, so I think I can squeeze it in.

I also asked about spectators, and he said that plenty of seating will be available all over the place. They're setting up two rings, but will have seating near both.

Excellent, thank you. I showed up at Longpoint to watch and there was no spectating, so I wanted to make sure I don't have the same thing happen since VAF is ~ 1 1/2 hours each way for me. :)

Huh...thinking I should go too, since it'd be an opportunity to see my knight brothers whom I have not set eyes on since before the year passed!

Yep, I'm all signed up. I expect to get destroyed by some of the MD folks. :)

I plan to show up in full harness, walk into the combat ring, and just shout out "okay, who wants some of this!?" 8)

Err, maybe not. But I do hope to show up. Putting it on my calendar before I forget.

Well I don't know about that but I will try and give you a good fight! ;)

Btw will visiting fencers have access to a locker room, i.e. shower facilities?
 ???

Just found out Squire Chris will be at the tournament too. Huzzah!

There are no lockers that I'm aware of, but there is a changing area attached to the bathroom with a shower. Folks will have to take turns on the shower.

BTW, it's good to get there a little early since they want to start the fights at 3:30, and it takes time to sign in and gear up and the like, of course.

Yeah I'm all packed up and didn't plan on bringing any blades since we will be using theirs. I hope to get there between 2:00 - 2:30 PM. What time do you think you'll get there?

Aiming for about the same time range. I do need to think about offloading a few things out of my bag first, since we won't be using steel or anything like that.

Nobody bringing swords? I suppose impromptu battles was just crossed off the list. :)

Here is a video of one of the matches I lost, although it was very close! Alas judges see what they see and don't always see what you hope they should see. - Ya see? ;)

Oh and I am on the left wearing the green gambeson and steel shoulder cops designated as the blue fencer. ;)

Wow, long fight. Good one though. Yeah, it looked like there were a lot of afterblows in the scoring, so you were getting just one point at a time, til he got a 3-point hit.

Yeah that last exchange was bizarre because when I slow the video down I can see it was actually a double where my follow up Unterhau took him in the forearms less than ½ a tempo behind his thrust; in fact my cut actually lifted his blade off my chest. I had become a bit impetuous anyways by that last exchange because my clean Oberhau to his head wasn’t seen by the judges in the previous exchange and if it had been called I would have won the match then or at the very least if my Unterhau was seen in that last exchange the match would have ended as a loss for both of us which was all I was going for at that point since I had thought I was way behind in the scoring. :-\

Wow, that is awesome stuff going on over there!  I'm hoping some of that bleeds westward.  My friend and I tried starting something five years back (wow, five years ago) but people didn't enjoy the classes as they were "too serious"...  umm... yeah... I'm really hoping WMA starts to take off out here.  I know the Adrian Empire guys out here are way excited to have me, so here's hoping that's a start.

Aren't you located in Southern California? There are a several clubs that have the Italian and Liechtenauer traditions in both the San Diego and L.A. areas.  ;)

Thanks for the info Sir Brian.  8)

Now I live out in the boonies of Mohave County, Az.  There's not much out here cept SCA and Adrian Empire.  The problem we're having with those is our work schedules, we aren't free Saturdays (lady works til 6pm:( ) so in a way we're on our own.  It's alright though, I have over 20 years of personal experience in WMA before it was even remotely popular or called that ;)  and I've been working on Destreza and I:33 with her on our own.  Basically when we can get a Saturday off (she has vacation days) we'll be all set.  We tried to make the last Adrian Empire event, since it was a crowning and everything, but we missed it.  Her weird work schedule that week combined with my lack of sleep because of that schedule and the little one needing her normal schedule basically ran me out at both ends.  By Saturday morning I was exhausted.

Right now we're looking at different rebated steel blades, I'm waiting for Darksword to come out with theirs, to compare to the I:33 Albion makes.  That and I have plenty of maille to work on until then ;)

As soon as our camera SNAFU is all cleared up, I'll start posting pics and videos of what we've been working on.

Well in that case you can always start your own study group! Just need some reference material and some decent dowels to get someone started on the basics! :)

I've pretty much come to that conclusion Sir Brian.  I have access to some epic resources thanks to ARMA, youtube, even here.  And I have me and my lady at the moment.  I'm hoping I can get others to join in as well.  I really think WMA/HEMA and Adrian Empire should really get along.  I'm hoping to find some "recruits" through them.  Unfortunately everyone here in the SCA is content with beating each other up with basically a club.

Thanks for the words of encouragement Sir Brian too, it does really help.  It's always nice to know someone else feels or thinks the same way I do sometimes.

YIS

I posted another one of my matches from this tournament on YouTube. This is a quick match where I beat Alex who also trains at MASHS. I was a bit pleasantly surprised when they still called a contact and awarded me the point at the .18 second mark when I pulled my cut short as I saw the potential hazard of it landing on the back of Alex's neck and it only grazed off the top and back tongue piece of his fencing mask.  :)

Here is another one of my matches this time against Ben Jarashow who is always a blast to fight because his attacks can be very aggressive and unpredictable! :)

What do you think about posting the videos on the Order site? We could create a new page for each event we attend that has any pics/videos and post them there.
