Title: New guy
Post by: John VII on 2014-06-16, 01:13:54
Heyo everyone. I'm badapple, 14, going into highschool. I took an interest a while back in swordsmanship and decided to pursue it. I bought a training hand and a half sword from  cold steel, and am waiting for it to come in, so I can begin training and learning.

Also, my grandfather has a sword which I would like to be identified if anyone knows anything about it. Pictures below.

Ah! Another young member on the forum :) I'm going into Junior year of highschool after this summer. Your going to love highschool, so much more freedom, freshman year is difficult, but a great experience.

So welcome to the forum young master!

As for the sword, I am not familiar with it. If I were to guess, that is does not look like one for combat, yet a more decorative piece or ceremonial one. For it looks very unbalanced seeing how there really is no pommel. It may also be based off the sword from Conan.

I'd recognize that sword hilt and pommel anywhere. 5 to 1 Starfire Forge made it. That handle is unique to them. Of course it looks quite aged and the blade is not typical of their work.

Thanks, but I went to their website and I'm not finding anything that looks like the sword. Stopped making them?

Might be a custom order or reproduction but it looks nothing like their stage combat blades today. You could contact them with pics to see if it is one of theirs.

Does your grandfather know anything about it? Did he order it or was it a gift?

He picked it up from a sword collector some time. Thats's about as much information as I have.

Hail and well met!  Are there any stamps/marks on the blade?  Looks like a Conan replica to me. Might be a Marto sword as I believe they made the officially licensed ones back in the 80s.

Nothing on the blade, but it sure does look like a conan replica! Thanks for pointing that out, probably what it is.

Hail and welcome. Very conan inspired sword. Looks aged. Possibly early Starfire, if it's Marto I think they had a pommel? Is the grip carved wood or leather?

Can't quite remember the grip material, but it wasn't leather. Thanks for all the responses!

Welcome to the forums.  I agree with the assessment that this is a Conan-inspired sword.  With the exception of the lack of pommel, the silhouette is very similar.  Naturally the sword posted by the OP doesn't have the decorative aspects like this one, but you see what I'm referring to.

Welcome!

Few questions: Did you know Arnie added an inch to his arms using that sword (it weighed near to 10 lbs)? Have you seen Conan the Musical? What, if anything, do you plan to do sword arts wise?
