Title: three musketeers
Post by: ECOX on 2011-11-06, 04:25:32
I went to see Three Musketeers today. I am glad I went to the discount theater. It had a very steampunk, wild wild west, kung fu movie feel to it. It was a last minute decision to go, so I didn't watch any trailers.  Once I changed my mind set, it wasn't too bad of a film. Would make a good Dollar rental.

Or a bootleg, eh?

Yeah, I could tell from the trailers that it's more steampunk, and not at all meant to be historical. If you go in with that mindset, is it still a fun film? We're tempted to see it.

I believe if I had had a different mindset it would have been enjoyable. Still not sure if I would want to pay full price to see it. But, I am tight. I will be interested to read others thought on it once they have seen it.

I went opening night with the guys in my reenacting unit. General consesus was it was awesome. The steampunk element was nicely done and not too over the top, in my opinion. The action was outstanding and the fight scenes very well done. I will be buying it when it hits dvd.

I concur with Sir Matthew! I did see the previews and the steampunk aspect appealed to my wife and me very much. It turned out to be an interesting and entertaining deviation from the original tried and true story which gave it the proper balance of familiarity and uniqueness.  :)

Worth a viewing then, it sounds like.  I'm not a fan of steampunk but I did enjoy Sky Captain so who knows, I might like this as well.

Not many reasons to pay $20 to watch the same movie that can be seen at the same theater for $14 or so on a matinee day. :)

I'm planning to see this. I've long abandoned any notion of watching a movie and seeing historically accurate stuff - Hollywood wants ratings and viewers, not praise from a small subset of people who like the historical accuracy. "Movie" mindset is different from "documentary" mindset for me; it seems to ease the mental anguish.

Sir Ed, looks like I am in the minority and it is probably worth the watch for you.
Sir James, I never go in looking for H.A., Like you said it does not appeal to the masses.
It didn't help that I was bummed because I started to see Puss in Boots but opted for a more mature film. lol.

Indeed, same for me. I saw him in the Shrek movies before.

Found this pic and had to manipulate it. The cocke being my name sake. Added boots, shield and my colors.

Well I am back from college and I have a lot to post!

I lieu of this post, I have seen Three Musketeers and I thought that the producers have destroyed the film with Steampunk, kung- film style filming and with visual effects.  Thsi spurned me to read the book itself.  But I couldn't afford the time to read a  64 chapter book.  So I decided to donwload the audiobook from this website which does have some meideval and renaissance literature for free.

http://www.audiobooksforfree.com/home (http://www.audiobooksforfree.com/home)

I listened to the entire audiobook and I am shocked at how in the book, there is plenty of action, suspense and history interwoven into the story that the film producers overlooked.  I understand that this is their attempt to revive interest in the book (which in reality is the first of three books called the D'Artagnan Romances), but I believe this attempt is feeble and does great injustice to the film.

Is it entertaining? Yes.

Is it close to the original story? No, you must read the book or cheat by listening to the audiobook to understand it.

(On a final note, the swordplay in the film with our Das Bill in agreement is atrocious)
