Title: Greetings to All
Post by: Michael de Faifaix on 2014-01-05, 21:53:50
Hello everyone and warm welcomes to all as well!!

My name is Michael and I am currently in El Paso TX. I happened to come across the MC page as I was looking to find new ideas for a rig I am wanting to make / buy for the SCA....I have been in loaner gear for far to long.... I am currently working on a 14th century persona from England who would / could have participated in the combat of the thirty. I have already picked out my name (Mighell de Fairfax) and my Device as well. (Gules, A Pale Or between two foxes sejant respectant) I just now need to register them within the college of heralds as they have already passed the local barony here, which is the citadel of the southern pass btw. What I am looking to do for a rig is a wisby CoP or a cherburge style chest piece with full legs and arms...I know splinted arms and legs were the go to back then, but full sets were making they're way into the fray as well... but im always up for sugestions though on how to put the hard kit together for a more historic look as well as soft kit....I have no idea what im going to do for this...

I am somewhat well versed in heraldy, but there is always room for improvement in that area, as it can get confusing at times lol. I also have around 3 years time with heavy combat within the SCA and around 6 years with Belegarth...think Amtguard with shield bashing...but I have saddly yet been able to attend a major event or war here in the outlands and neighboring kingdoms though.

(EDIT: Fixed title spelling -Ed)

Welcome to the Modern Chiv forums, and welcome to the one true Century!  You can see my kit in my avatar... ;-)

If you're not already familiar with it, this is an excellent resource for the 14th in to early 15th century.  Dr. Doug Strong did an analysis of 1,300 effigies from England, France and Germany and isolated different features of the harnesses vs decades.  It's a great way to get a quick feel for what's appropriate when and in which country:

I'd recommend starting a thread in the Armoury subsection of the forum to really geek out on harness ideas if you want.

Hail and welcome! We have a couple SCA folks on here, and if you want to go down the more historical route but still passing SCA standards we can help with that too.

Feel free to post a "kit" thread and we'll give you some feedback and ideas. :)

Hail and well met!

In the blazon of your heraldry what color are the foxes? If no color is mentioned is it assumed they are 'proper'?  ???

Welcome! I am new to the SCA and am making a 14th century kit for CotT too! Check out my thread on the armory for the great feedback given to me as I figure out what type of armor to have commissioned. It is great fun to learn more about armor and how it is built and what is appropriate for the centuries etc...

Hail & well-met. What I think Sir Patrick is implying that we can help you spend your money on many over-priced medieval time-period toys that are just as much to our liking. :) :)
