Title: not armour but what i made this weekend.
Post by: Sir Wolf on 2012-02-27, 02:44:08
cleaned up my shop a while back. it's been nice to get in there and play around. this weekend I made a K ration box. problem is I don't have a wood plainer so I had to cheat the boards where they are shown to be period. (there like 5/8ths and 3/4s :) mine is on the right and on the bottom. the other is a bought version.

What do K-rations look like?  I've often wondered about them and C-rations.  The word 'ration' seems to mean 'unpalatable' to me.  Although I'll admit, I've been known to eat the odd MRE just because I think they're so cool.

Time to start stocking up on that stuff is now though...the world may not end Dec 21, 2012, but even so- the Zombie Apocalypse will begin and it'll be too late to be worrying about foodstuffs then...you'll be more worried about not getting lower on the food chain than is absolutely necessary!

I'd say a step up from doggie biscuits...a short step up.  On the other hand, I've eaten MREs before and enjoyed them.  In fact, I need to acquire a few cases of them for the impending Zombie Apocalypse, December 21, 2012.  Oh, it is going to happen gents...ready thyselves!

This Wikipedia article states that MRE’s replaced the C-rations in 1981 but were still issued until depleted actually turned out to be early 1984 because I wasn’t issued MREs until my last field deployment in Germany around late April 1984.

The C-rations were a lot better than the K-rations but still not great. About the best was the pork ‘n beans, spaghetti ‘n meatballs and the highly sought after pound cake. – You could get some serious trade offers with a pound cake since there was usually only one in an entire case of C-rations. Only newbie’s scoffed down the chocolate ‘n toffee disks which we called ‘John Wayne Bars’ because they didn’t know they caused severe constipation. – Good for trading with the indigenous population though. ;)

Zombie Apocalypse? - I’m ready for it! – Although I would prefer if it held off until AFTER I got my Crecy from Albion in a year or two!  ;D

I hear you, Sir Brian...on both counts.  In reading up on these rations, at least they understood they were meant as a temporary fix to the ages-old ongoing problem that is an army marches on its belly.  Certainly better than nothing, as I've had cause to have that and can tell you- almost everything is better than nothing.  Except for offal, that's no good for anyone, only beasts.

I've been fortunate enough to only have to deal with MREs.  Some are not as good as others, but they're all edible once you dump that whole mini-bottle of tabasco sauce they all come with.
