Title: Baltimore Arms Fair March 16 and 17, 2013, Timonium, MD
Post by: Sir William on 2013-02-28, 17:54:18
From Wade Allen, master armorer over at AA:

Quote
Once again, this time of the year comes around. I will be at table J-29 at the Baltimore Arms Fair March 16 and 17.
It is held at the Maryland State Fair Grounds in Timonium MD.

Come by, say hi. Visit the other tables. Most of the stuff there is guns, but they are generally older and this isn't a modern camo-crowd.
There is usually armour on my table and on several other tables. Swords are around, some polearms, etc.

I am usually willing to bring a few bits for people to play with while we talk.

Come by, say hi.

Wade

Has anyone been to this event before?

Yep, I've gone a few times. It's very heavy on the civil-war era stuff.

BUT... There are always a few tables with medieval and renaissance era stuff. One of the booths in particular focuses on medieval, and he's very cool about letting you handle the swords. This can make the trip worth it. If you have a spare $5k or $10k, you could even take one home. :)  Polearms are cheaper though, sometimes under $2k.

Might even be Wade's table you're talking about as he goes every year (at least that was the impression I got).

Sounds like fun. I can't wait for Ren-Faire to start around here. :) :) SCA has a medieval ball in Cranston, RI with the East Kingdom royals & my Barony on Sat, March 9, 2013 where my wife & I will be attending. Fun & drink til the festivities I really look forward to begin.

Pre 1899 so the BATF doesn't care. :D

Oddly enough I made a post on AA today and Wade answered .. might have to ask him if he can bring a couple pieces and I'll try to get over there to talk to him. Got a small project I might be working on. :) Thanks for the heads up, I missed the thread announcing this on AA.

Yeah, I think he is usually there, showing off a few items. But the table I was referring to is this guy, I think:

http://www.antiqueweaponstore.com/ (http://www.antiqueweaponstore.com/)

Of particular interest is this page:

http://www.antiqueweaponstore.com/EUROPEAN%20SWORDS%20PRE-1700.htm (http://www.antiqueweaponstore.com/EUROPEAN%20SWORDS%20PRE-1700.htm)

What's great is that after handling a few of the originals, you can appreciate just how good the A&A and Albion replicas are, and how some of the others may miss the mark in terms of weight or balance.

Hmm...that's definitely worth pursuing; I've never held a real antique before.

I'm going to aim to get there around 9:30-10am. It opens at 9, and there's usually a long line around that time, but I just don't feel like getting up super early. :)

Darn! How's it look around 11? I've got comcast tech coming between 8 and 10 tomorrow morning, and I'm about 1 1/2 hours away. Hoping they get here early and fix stuff early so I can get out there.

Sir William, if you get out there, text me - have a couple things for you.

What a day! :D

I met Wade Allen, who had lots of pieces he graciously allowed me to fondle ... err ... examine. I've never had my hands on an actual historical antique, so having 10 in a few hours was beyond words. I also got to meet Robert MacPherson *and* James Arlen Gillespie and listen to them all talk armor for 2 hours. Fantastic! Got lots of advice from them on my harness, too. Wade Allen doesn't give himself enough credit on his talent; that waistcoat he made for his son is extremely impressive, and he said he did it all with just a hammer and anvil. I've got 5 times more tools and I can't produce anything but scrap!

There was also a 10th/11th century sword (whose authenticity was suspect), but we got to handle quite a few antique rapiers. Also got to see a massive bearing flamberge, from, I think 16th century? Of course, the highlight for me was armor, and meeting people I've wanted to meet 10+ years. I can die a happy man now! (though I hope it doesn't happen anytime soon!)

EDIT: In my excitement I forgot to mention, I got to play with two authentic mail sleeves, and MAN the rings are tiny! It's smaller than the 6mm indian mail. You know how I know? I got to be the first person (besides Allen and Mac) to try on Robert MacPherson's sample tailored sleeve for IceFalcon to send to india for them to start working from! It moves way better than my 9mm sleeve; my arm is a little small but the movement and fitment just holding it still is much better. No bingo wings! And proper taper. And an elbow gusset. I have pics to post later. The only thing is, I completely hated it .... because now I look at my 9mm and want to cry. Good grief, seeing and touching that historical mail up close, the differences seared into my brain are nearly gut-wrenching. The only thing easing that pain is knowing I can't afford mail of that quality. :)

EDIT 2: Also should caveat and say that Wade Allen said there is historical mail with larger rings than the sleeves I played with. The quality is night and day though! Even the pin riveted historical stuff moves like it's almost a liquid, so fluid, without any slop, and not a snag one. Sigh.

I saw the photos on facebook!  Color me jealous!  That's a great opportunity you had there Sir James!  I would love the opportunity to handle some original maille.

If you create an account but only add us (not adding tons of friends) then when we "tag" you, you get a notification that we added a photo of you, or posted something for/with you. It'll make sense once you're signed up.

It'll associate your name with who you are in the photo. That way we can indicate who you are in the photos, and you can easily find the photos you're tagged in. If you want, you can use your knight name instead of real name, if that's all you're going to use facebook for.
