Title: Closing weekend of MDRF
Post by: Sir Brian on 2013-09-16, 13:04:07
Is it possible we can coordinate a closing weekend Order/Forum assembly at the MDRF during the closing weekend of October 19th/20th?

I know it is the weekend right after DOK and I’ll have to work extra hours during that week to take off two weekends in a row but is it feasible? It would be awesome if we can get as many of the order together for a photo op that weekend!

Oh and Sir Ian I don’t know if you had the number to the Navy Lodge in Annapolis, MD if you wanted to use them if you and the family can make it up here. :)

Sounds great to me!

I just checked and the Air & Scare event that I like to go to will be on the 26th. Whew. Sometimes it clashes with the saturday of MDRF closing weekend.

I think I can do that; I've nothing on my calendar - just need to check w/the wife as her calendar may say otherwise.  The last Sunday is the DoW right?  Would we be talking about both days, or just one of them?

I have duty on that Sunday, meaning I have to be at work at 0645 Sunday morning, so most likely not going to work for me.  I'm taking a week of leave to make DoK and missing a duty day already for that (Saturday the 12th)

Well I personnally would prefer Sunday (DOW) but I can make Saturday as well if nobody else can make Sunday.  ;)

You don't have to explain those duty-day blues to me! ;)
Perhaps next year you and the family will be able to come visit MDRF. :)

I've been planning on going Sun, and doing so in full harness. I may be able to get Chris to come, and possibly put him in at least *some* armor too. If not, at least garb.

what is this KOD?

DoK/KOD = Days of Knights / Knight of Days?  ;)

DoK is a living history event focusing on medieval knights, knightly orders, etc. and will be held in Kentucky in mid-October.

Title: Re: Closing weekend of MDRF

maybe its a plastic sword?
Title: Re: Closing weekend of MDRF
Post by: Sir Martyn on 2013-10-05, 03:24:40
Also planning on attending Sunday the 20th (as well as this Sunday).

Actually Ser Robert's post reminded me of a question - while real swords are clearly not allowed at MDRF, I see their site also says no "costume" weapons either.  Does this mean even a LARP forma or latex sword would not be allowed in?

I remember last time I went (about three years ago) they would not let me bring in the very wooden waster I had purchased there just a couple of weekends earlier.  Was hoping to get one my LARP weapons in at least this time though, in lieu of a real sword.
Title: Re: Closing weekend of MDRF
Post by: Sir James A on 2013-10-05, 04:55:55
I believe LARP weapons are also disallowed.

A year or two ago, the "maryland special" swords that Sirs Edward and Brian made were allowed. They were "swords" with the blade chopped off about a half foot past the crossguard, and glued into the scabbard permanently. This year (or last?) they stopped allowing even those in. Empty scabbards seem to be fine.

A knight without weapons is like a King Cobra without fangs or venom. :( But MDRF is just such a great faire!
Title: Re: Closing weekend of MDRF
Post by: Sir Brian on 2013-10-05, 11:46:44
Well they do allow those sword umbrellas so maybe it's one of those?
Title: Re: Closing weekend of MDRF
Post by: Sir Edward on 2013-10-05, 22:24:08
This has become a bit of a sore topic for some of us. They stopped us from using those "Maryland Specials" about mid-season last year. They stop people with toy weapons all the time. But a small kid with the same toy or wooden weapon might get in, depending on who is working security. And depending on which gate you go through, or who is distracted, you'll probably see a couple of people walking through with actual steel swords too. It's very inconsistently enforced. And once past the gate, it's extremely rare that security will stop you later.

Title: Re: Closing weekend of MDRF
Post by: Sir Wolf on 2013-10-05, 22:46:36
remember gate workers are low paid staff that work there for the ren faire experience or just for the money. they're not police or any sort or law enforcement. well some at the park maybe hired off duty enforcement. so use your judgement wisely. it is a knights honor to uphold the code of the law. whether it be right or wrong uphold it.

i know it sucks. but if they say no swords then no swords. :(

I'll be squire-less so ... my armor options are limited. Guess I'll just do maille with adornments & Great Helm.
Title: Re: Closing weekend of MDRF
Post by: Sir Brian on 2013-10-07, 19:23:38
I'm usually in the parking lot between 9:45 - 10:30 and could help you armor up if you wish Lord Dane.
Title: Re: Closing weekend of MDRF
Post by: Sir James A on 2013-10-07, 22:25:51
I'll be there sunday as well and can help with armoring up as long as I haven't been completely armored up either. I might be able to do so after, if I take off my gauntlets, but as I've never tried, I don't want to make that offer. But for closing day, you'll want to be armored up. Last year I missed the big group photos with everyone in armor and costume - I'm guessing there was 12 or 14 people there at the joust field letting people take photos.

Squire Jason is usually on site fairly early, since his wife is on cast. He's usually willing to help with armoring up too.
Title: Re: Closing weekend of MDRF
Post by: Sir Martyn on 2013-10-15, 02:10:04
Perhaps the easiest thing would be to shoot for a group time/place to meet to armor up - but might be hard to do that in the parking lot...
Title: Re: Closing weekend of MDRF
Post by: Sir Edward on 2013-10-15, 02:52:45
I'm often one of the last to show up. I'm going to try to push ourselves out the door a little faster, since it'll be the last day, but we'll see how it works out. The drive is definitely longer for us this year too.

I'm finding that I often don't get in the gate until 11-11:30.

The White-Hart area where we met up initially, on the side facing the food court, is a nice open area where it's easy to find people, so over the years it has sort of turned into the de-facto meeting area.

Post by: Sir Brian on 2013-10-15, 08:28:44
Hopefully we can all be there before 1:00 PM and meet up behind the Market stage (next to the joust field) for an armor photo op. Make sure to invite anyone else who is in armor to be there by 1:00 PM. We try and coordinate this every year on DOW and it is gradually growing in numbers.  :)

Awesome!

BTW, the weather report is looking good. Partly cloudy, and low '60s. Great armor weather!

With it being cool like that, I may bring out the riveted mail.

There were 5 members in attendance in armor... and 6 when Sir William arrived a bit after this photo.

It was also great to finally meet Lord Dane in person, and to meet Gareyth as well!

It was great to get a good showing of armored folks at MDRF yesterday! I have a few pictures to process. I posted one group photo on the Order's FB page already (Sir James linked it above). I have others after Sir William arrived too, but this was the best of the "front" views, so I posted that first.

It was really good to get a chance to interact some more with Gareyth and Lord Dane. I think Sir William must have been dragged away by his lady though, since we lost track of him fairly quickly! We'll have to correct that mistake sometime soon, and find some time to have another gathering.

Post by: Sir William on 2013-10-21, 15:15:26
Brethren, my sincerest apologies for the quick entry/exit- I pushed for us to attend this last day because I'd missed the entire season due to scheduling conflicts and my lovely lady had a prior engagement that I made her a little late for...but I've always missed this photo op in the past and besides, I hadn't seen any of you since the last VARF show date I made.  You guys looked fantastic!

My wife did take a goodly amount of pics so I'll be posting those as soon as I can locate her camera.

One thing I did note, even had I been able to stick around, I wouldn't have made it much longer in harness...I am woefully out of shape and it is showing up in spades now.  I have pains in areas I never felt pain in before- I am not currently aging gracefully I must say.

Oh man, I can relate. Some of it might be fit as well; that is, maybe some adjustments will improve the comfort. Sometimes even a small change can make a big difference in how it drags on you.

I have a hard time getting through the day in my 15th C. plate harness, but I've managed to make my 14th C. plate work reasonably well, and my mail harness isn't bad at all (unless I wear the chausses).

But yeah, age and fitness do factor in. I know there will come a day when I won't want to wear anything more than my aluminum. But that day is not today. ;)

It was great to see all of you there yesterday! The group photo looks awesome. I remember one year I had to stand next to the 7-foot tall Dragon (second one from the far right), and I looked like Gimli.... Sorry I missed this year's. Other than being rebuked by Mr. Pyland himself (of Pyland Jeweler near the White Hart) for putting my helmet in his wife's stone plant-holder, it was a wonderful day. In my defense, by that time I had already consumed five mugs of cider, and I thought they were weeds....

It's always great to be associated with all of you, and finally got to meet Lord Dane and Sir Gareth.

Hail and farewell -

My sword is quite the clever trick that I thought of about halfway through the photo shoot. :D

My crossed gauntlets at the top of the scabbard obscure the fact that I do not actually have a sword, just the belt and scabbard. ;)

Just make sure you are on the correct side of the battlefield brother. :) Otherwise, you are fair game in the battle line. Better to join swords than cross them.
