Since the fair season is starting up, I guess it's time for this year's faire-season thread, to discuss weekends to invade the various faires.
I think so far I'm planning on hitting VARF (as a patron, not our demos) this coming Sunday, May 19. So far the weather looks to be 70, cloudy, and some chance of thunderstorms:
http://weather.yahoo.com/united-states/virginia/louisa-2442298/ (http://weather.yahoo.com/united-states/virginia/louisa-2442298/)
Depending on the rain forecast, I may end up in aluminum mail that day. Or the steel, just without helm and so on. We'll see (the nice thing is my steel mail is stainless).
-
Are you going to bring a waster and helm so we can duel a bit? I'm bringing both my great helm and bascinet which I'm adding a chin-strap to finally. :)
-
Sirs Edward & Brian, any plans for the PARF when it opens for season?? :)
-
when does that one start and end?
-
VARF - Likely won't make anything except the 2 weekends of the shows. Harnessfechten practice this weekend, and some armor tweaks need to be made before, and probably after. That leaves me just 1 weekend after.
MDRF - I plan on somewhere around 5 days, but have no ideas which one until the time gets closer.
-

Yup, I'll try to remember to bring some stuff. I also have the synthetic swords.
-
Wow! I guess it makes sense, but your guys' Ren-season starts late! The Phoenix, Az Ren is in February and all the vendors agree it's the first one and usually has great weather to boot. I can't imagine gearing up for faire in May, June, or July in Arizona. The LA one ends this coming weekend as well. Makes sense though, I know VA weather, and May/June is gorgeous. After that, we'd all be walking lightning rods! :o be careful out there and have fun
-
Opening weekend for MDRF is the last weekend in August which they also designated as “kids” weekend ergo I’m wearing full harness all day long in 90+ heat! 8)

Those would be cool as well, but we’ll just have to limit thrusts to the face since I ‘think’ they can make it through the visor’s oculars. ???
Sirs Edward & Brian, any plans for the PARF when it opens for season??:)
I try and make at least two weekends, sometimes three. Usually one or two before MDRF and the last weekend which is after MDRF closes, then we do our last faire of the season down in CRF in mid-November.
when does that one start and end?
PARF = August 3 - October 27, 2013
-
do we have a listing anywhere of all the faires again?

We'll have to check that.
I may have to re-think the whole thing. Are we thinking about trying harnessfechten? If that's the case, I need to wear more plate, but there's the threat of thunderstorms that day, and I can't put myself into it. Also, I don't have any helms that are working well for fighting. Closest I've got is the sallet for my 15th C. plate. And I need to do some more fitting on that I think. Otherwise I'm probably using my Terry Tindell mask.

I haven't been bothering to do that lately, since it's been quite a pain to go to every single website and find the new dates, with some of them not even updating their dates until later in the year.

Actually we could do a little of both Blossfectchen and Harnessfechten so steel maille with gambesons should be adequate protection. As for helm what about your Circa 1250 helm? :-\

That's true, that one could work. We'd have to be careful about hits to the front of the face though, since I don't there's much to keep it from smashing my nose.

Well you are going to block right? ;)
-
Oh yeah, what am I worried about... I'm not going to get hit. :) lol
-
Reminds me of my friends and I airsofting... we always, always sacrifice our bodies to protect our weapons! ;D just don't hurt the pretty helmet!

Always keep a spare head bucket handy. :)

Well tomorrow (sunday the 19th), I'll probably run a little late getting to VARF. I may get there closer to lunch time. I expect tonight to be a late night, with Squire Jason's bachelor party. :)

give him our best!!!!! and tell him there's still time to get outta this deal of marriage! lol

I will hopefully be able to make MDRF every other weekend or so. And really hope to spend more days with you knights therein....
I've never been to VARF, but from the photos I've seen it is even more 'Renaissancy' than MDRF. I would really seem out of place (and time) as an intolerant, 12th-century Templar ;D Maryland is do-able just because there are so many more people.
-
I'm not sure if the exact time period of VARF is closer to renaissance than MDRF, but the majority of the cast seems to be dressed more in that style. However, don't let that hold you back from attending; last year there was somebody there in a samurai soft kit. And there's lots of people in mundane clothing. Nothing to worry about!
-
Oh yeah, as a patron it doesn't really matter. :) But yeah, VARF is set slightly later in the period than MDRF, as it's Queen Elizabeth, versus King Henry VIII.

Noone will notice if you are spending the majority of time at the tavern. :) :)

WAIT! There is a renaissance faire there? I thought it was just a quirky beer/wine tent set up in a field for wayward travelers! ;)

Possibly! I might spend the whole time in the tavern. I could make a sitcom out of it. The crazy Templar who has been there for 400 years and is immortal as long as he doesn't leave the tavern.... I would regale the patrons with how awesome things were - "in my day, when men were MEN. Puffy shirts? Plate armor? HA! In MY day, we wore chain mail, over bare skin! We didn't talk like funny Shakespeare guys either, more like Clint Eastwood: "You gonna convert, punk? Well are ya?"
Please don't kill me.
-
Sorry Silvanus. You cannot make some tavern version of 'Highlander'. "There can be only one..." ;D 8)
-
It would be nice to see a brother Templar there...I'm usually the only one, Silvanus. ;)

BAAHAHHAHAAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAAHHAHAAHAHAHA eehheheheheheh lololololoo boy i needed that hahahahahaha
-
And Congrats to Sir Jason...I am happy for him.

Doh! Jeff Wasson was at VARF this weekend....

Ooh! Which harness did he wear?? Seriously though, it's too bad he didn't come down during one of our weekends. I'd like to meet him.
-
anyone going the 6th?
-
I will be at MDRF on the 6th. - I'll be the guy in green! ;)
-
I'll probably be there, as long as nothing comes up between now and then that changes that.
-
Alas, I do believe my RenFair-ing has come to an end for another season. T'was a pretty good run this year.
We hit the Pittsburgh Festival today. Tons of people out there, and the weather was perfect for armor. I also got to try out the new chausses I just finished. I say "finished", but they're still really only in beta stage. ;) They'll need a few more modifications before I can call them done.
-
Nice!! Well done!
-
way killer
-
Great job! Your surcoat is awesome btw.
-
Agreed on the surcoat. Very nice!
-
Danke, gents! ;D
-
Nice kit you have there, sir.
-
Too bad you won't be coming back to PaRF. I'd like getting an in person look at those Chausses. The pic looks good, though.
-
I don't know if ill make it up again to p.a. renfaire. it would probably be at the end of october.
-
Let us know if you can get down to MDRF before the season is out. We'd love to get another look at your very nice kit! :)

Ah it is regrettable that your season is over already as I fully concur with Sir Edward and would like another chance to see your most excellent kit again! :)
-
Well, we've already got the hotel booked for the second weekend of PaRF next year. Just sayin'. ;) By then I should have worked out all the bugs in my chausses. (Nothing worse than having bugs in your breeches, right?)
I might be able to make one more weekend at Pittsburgh since it's relatively close, but other than that, it's just too expensive to travel to any of the farther faires this year, unfortunately. I guess that's what I get for picking expensive hobbies. ;D
On an unrelated note, can anyone give me some more info on the DoK event? Does it have a website or anything? I've seen it mentioned plenty of times, but don't really know a whole lot about it other than it's a living history event.
-
Will be at MDRF also on the 6 October. Hope to see you gentle knights there.
-
Excellent! I'll be looking for you! :)
-
Wow that's great!
It'll be nice to meet so many knights
-
I'm also hoping to make it to MDRF (finally!) Oct 6 - any particular time & place folks usually meet up?
-
We typically hang around the area between the first food court area you come to and the White Hart Tavern just after you past O'Shucks tavern. As we typically are wearing armor we do not get very far because of the photo opportunities. ;)
Looking forward to meeting you in person! :)
-
Yeah, that area between O'Shucks and the White Hart Tavern is a good area to look for us. Particularly on the side of the White Hart facing the food court. It's a nice open, but wooded area.
-
And has ease of access to lots of ale, mead, beer, .... ummm did I mention mead? 8)
-
Yeah 4 knights are going, i was so worried no one would be there.
we are going to have to get a picture.
-
Looks like I won't be making it until the final two weekends of the Faire. Hope to see some of you there.
-
Well I hope to see as many as can be there on the 6th and will do my best to also make the closing on the 20th.
-
Weather for the 6th is *suppose* to be 79 with 10-15 mph winds so it could be a little warm but definitely doable! :)

Depending what happens with my truck today, I may or may not make MDRF on the 6th. If I do, I may need some help armoring up. :)
-
im sure some peasants will help you.
does the word peasant sound negative?
Well I went to the maryland renfaire in my armor, on a 90 degree day.
I go in my armor no matter the heat. Except the p.a. faire there is no shade and the blacktop roads are HOT
Im still wondering if i will make it back to the p.a. faire.
it would be the last weekend.
-
You're young, so that's much easier to do than for the rest of us. Heh. :) I used to not be bothered by the heat much, when I was a teen. Dehydration? No problem! :)
Now, I really have to be careful.
-
beating my head against the keyboard.... what did i do!!!!!!!!
my son is now a cub scout, he has something this weekend, next weekend AND the weekend after that. 2 of them are camp outs and 1 is a night corn maze.... no MD faire :(
-
Wow, that's cool (and sucks). Why can't they have one of the camp-outs at MDRF? :)
-
Why can't they have one of the camp-outs at MDRF? :)
A brilliant solution! :)
-
lol cause we're in WV duh! lol
cub scouts up here is a lot smaller than it was when i was in many years ago. it could be the area but i think time has sure changed things. our council is combining with another council, they are closing the area camp ground and selling off a ton of old stuff. the entire pack might have 45-50 kids in it. seems sad, i remember my pack growing up had like 100=150 in it. prob just a sign of the times. but he is gonna have fun. he's prob the youngest in his den and is super excited to have "just dad" stuff to do. lol
sorry guys about the faire. we did make VARF though
-
lol cause we're in WV duh! lol
WV to MD = Map Navigation Skills badge! ;)
-
YOU! make me sick.
lol just joking, its ok.
-
Sorry you won't be able to make it Sir Wolf. :(
Sir James I will be happy to help you armor up if I make it in time. I always suit up to about 80% of kit, including hauberk and chausses, before leaving the house. If I ever get pulled over, I will have a lot of explaining to do....
-
you would be searched like sir lancelot was in monty python.

Non-sense. You simply say to the bewildered officer that your horse is in the shop & this rental is all you could get. :) That should explain everything. ;D
-
Hahahahaaa.
-
Looks like it may be even warmer than the prediction Sir Brian cited earlier in the week, ugh. I'm toying with light kit this Sunday and then fully armor up for the 20th, but am wavering. Can't be hotter that what we endured at Drachenfest (40 C +) - hmmm...
Either way, also happy to help out James - what time were you planning to get there? Would you need a lift?

It would be possibly next Sunday, but barring things beyond my control, also on the 20th (closing Sunday). I'll be shooting for 9:15 or 9:30 arrival; I can get about halfway suited up on my own (sabatons, greaves, cuisses, mail fauld, gorget, half of the cuirass - I can get it on but not completely strapped). I primarily need help getting the cuirass strapped down, getting the arms on, and the helmet. The walk across the parking lot, depending on distance from the gate, may be a bit taxing, and I need to purchase entrance ticket there, so I'm putting some "stop and rest a minute" time in there. :) Appreciate the offers for help gentlemen!

Yeah definitely no armor for me tomorrow! I’ll be wearing a kilt.
As something new this year Sir James they have the rickshaws running in the parking lot to the front gate so if you bring some extra cash they could be just what you need after you’ve armored up! ;)
-
im wearing my kit, last time i went to the fair i wore it in 90 degree. but its basically going to feel like that.
I look for you sir brian.
-
sorry i keep repeating that.
Sir edward are you going in a light kit or no kit?
-
Well, tomorrow (Sunday the 6th) is supposed to be clear, but in the upper '80s. Maybe light armor, or light soft kit might be in order. I haven't decided.
If I wear any armor, it's going to be the aluminum stuff, and no helmet or shield.
-
Agreed. Light kit it is for me as well tmrw, will save the heavy stuff for the 20th ;)
-
On site now (black/green tabard & hood) near the White Hart smoking area. Looking for any of you gents.

It was great getting a chance to meet you. Too bad we didn't cross paths again later in the day. I ended up being fairly busy, since some friends who don't come often were there.
We also got to meet Sir Nate and his brother, and ran into Silvanus too.
I also met a young gent who was in Hospitaller gear, who said he's in the Beauseant Brotherhood group on facebook. I gave him a card for the forum, so hopefully he'll drop by.
-
I want to come down for the last weekend 10/19-20 of MDRF. I will see if I can. Can't this weekend because of anniversary. Wife doesn't want to come so I might do solo.

I concur with Sir Edward in the privilege it was to finally get to meet you and your wonderful family. I hope we’ll have the pleasure in more of your company and a chance for us to do some training together @ MASHS in the near future.
It was a great pleasure meeting you Sir Nate and your brother and of course seeing our ever so humble squire Silvanus! :)
I’m looking forward to the 20th (last day of MDRF) when we can hopefully organize another all armor photo opportunity as we’ve done the previous years. Our friend Amo has invited Sir Edward and me to a knighting of his group @ 2:00 PM so I’m thinking if we setup the photo op for 1:00 PM between the jousting field and the back of the Market Stage we’d have plenty of time to get to the wine garden.

That would be awesome if you can make it!
Sir William and Sir Nathan will you be able to make it on the last day?
-
I soooooo wish I could join you guys, but I'll be stuck up at PaRF. We have one last weekend after Maryland closes, so if any of you can, come on up and visit me. I have a pretty hectic schedule and don't get out of camp much, but I always enjoy seeing old freinds and meeting new ones from here.
-
ya nice to meet you guys, finally.
My mom loves going to the p.a. faire but if we do go up i may not be in gear.
-
gareyth i didnt see you there.
i guess you didnt see me there, it would have been nice to meet you.
-
Settled. I'll be there that weekend. Not sure if wife will come with me but I planned in case she changes her mind. I'll be staying @ Mariott Springhill Suites next to faire Sat & Sun nights. I'll drive down for Sat but likelihood is Sunday. Either case gentlemen, I shall be attending. :)
-
Well with me having to work this Saturday and now the Monday holiday, I was going to go to the MDRF on Sunday yet after all this rainfall through Saturday methinks I will just skip this weekend all together and enjoy my 24th Anniversary with a Sunday afternoon movie and dinner at Melting Pot. So I hope you all have fun at DOK and MDRF all of you that are going! :)

We're usually good for the last day of PARF Sir Matthew! We'll stop by and see you if we can do it again this year! :)
-
So... I was going to hit up the Reno Celtic Celebration last weekend but it was $15/person for one day and we only had 2 hrs available to go. Now keep in mind that it has been very tiny since it moved from July to October about 5+ years ago. However, from what I heard, it's price has increased by 150% and quality has sunk a lot in just the 3 years since I did a demo there. Heck it used to be free for 15 years.
It's been an event in town fro 20+ years and watching it die is sad.
-
Yeah it is sad to see a faire die. The Raleigh NC faire when that way a couple of years ago. :(
-
I'm in for the last day, Sir Brian. I am sorry I have not been present this year- I really miss it.
-

That is awesome news indeed Sir William as you've been sorely missed this season! I will be buying you a tankard and be assured that I will abide no arguments about that! Oh and I'll also put your buckler in my car so I won't forget to deliver it to you! :)
-
I'll be at MDRF definitely on last day Sunday. 8 hours drive Saturday. Wife might come if we leave early but I wanted to stay Sunday night. She has work Monday. Either case, I will be there. :) Good to meet Sir William, Silvanus, Sir Wolf, Sir James, Sir Nathan (if coming), Sir Robert, and any others I missed. I am buying drinks for Sirs Brian & Edward because I missed dinner at PARF. Any others can grab a mug & try to beat me to the kegger. :P
-
A great pleasure and an honor to meet Sir Brian and Sir Edward last week, and I look forward to the Grand Gathering in six days!
-
Truly Gareyth it was and honor and privilege to be in your company and look forward to more conversations with you and your lovely family. :)
