Title: Ancient Knightly Wisdom (True Quote, no matter the source)
Post by: Thorsteinn on 2011-03-11, 23:19:32
"No man in the wrong can stand up against a fellow that's in the right and keeps on a-comin".
-Texas Ranger Captain William Jesse McDonald's personal motto.
----------------------------------------------------------------
"I'm not a Wiccan. I'm not big on churches of any kind, despite the fact that I've spoken, face-to-face, with an archangel of the Almighty.

But there were some things I believed in. Some things I had faith in. And faith isn't about perfect attendance to services, or how much money you put on the little plate. It isn't about going skyclad to the Holy Rites, or meditating each day upon the divine.

Faith is about what you do. It's about aspiring to be better and nobler and kinder than you are. It's about making sacrifices for the good of others--even when there's not going to be anyone telling you what a hero you are.

Faith is a power of its own, and one even more elusive and difficult to define than magic."

and

"There are things you can't walk away from. Not if you want to live with yourself afterward."
- Harry Dresden, "The Dresden Files'.

There's a historical quote that's similar. I forget where it's from or the exact wording. I think I heard it recently on the Chivalry-Today podcast... it said something along the lines of whether or not you're a noble, a knight, or whatever, if you act like a churl, you're a churl. :)

Here's one that applies to all mankind.

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside all people.

He said, "My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all.

One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: "Which wolf wins?"

The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

Been a long time since I was in a fight but judging from my track record, I'd pick people I was sure could beat me good.  Turns out, I was right, they could.  lol

Well, I think it depends. In all the HEMA activities I do, I really like to fight people who are at my level or better, because it pushes me to do my best and forces me to improve.

If I were at war, I'd go for the lowest-hanging fruit first if the situation called for it, since that's just good tactics. Chivalry doesn't demand that we lower our chances for victory. Quite the opposite. There's more to prowess than how hard you can hit. It's easy to forget that Chivalry and Prowess also include striving for excellence and victory.

A win's a win, eh Sir Edward?  There are uses for that sort of chivalry I suppose.  LOL

I'm kidding of course, its only sound strategy.  A cop once told me, after I'd complained to him about him getting me when I was at the back of the convoy when the guy in front was moving faster than I was.

He used a fishing analogy that basically went- slowest one gets the jakes.

Good times.

A win's a win, eh Sir Edward?  There are uses for that sort of chivalry I suppose.  LOL

Well, there's a couple of different ways to look at it. Historically, knights weren't expected to be honorable towards peasants, which most of the enemy troops would have been. Chivalry only applied to their equals and betters. In the modern context, that doesn't apply anymore of course, but it was a historical reality.

In the other sense, you can be both honorable and fierce, chivalric and strategic, all at the same time. That is, you can fight to win once the gloves are off, but you can't mistreat your foe once you've defeated him. Does that make sense?

In war, knights had to be effective, first and foremost. It doesn't mean they discard their honor, just that they have to apply it appropriately, without taking it to such an extreme that they're giving the other side the upper-hand. :)

I should add though that it really depends on the situation.

Here's a thought experiment-- Imagine that you're a biplane combat pilot in World War I, and that your squadron comes into contact with a German squadron of equal number, but one of them is the Red Baron. What would you do?

I'd probably strongly consider going for the Red Baron first. To me, my team's best chances of survival are in keeping him from getting onto anyone's tail, rather than just try to rack up kills on my own behalf going after lesser pilots. And if I couldn't shoot him down, but managed to force him to withdraw, I'd have to let him go and make sure my team can handle the remaining planes.

But in other scenarios, if you're the cavalry and you just really need to reduce the number of people shooting/charging at your side, sometimes the best thing to do is simply cull the herd. :)

(BTW, have you ever looked at the Red Baron's combat record? Man, that was one heck of a pilot!)

Interesting idea, Sir Edward. In all of my RPG experience, you usually thin out the "minions" when confronting larger bosses, so that the remaining party members can focus on the big guy and take him down with extreme prejudice. You just have to be faster at eliminating the minions than the boss is at eliminating your team mates.

Nissan Maxima is an interesting guy.

I think it depends on the situation, in a RPG anyways.  I'm playing Dragon Age: Origins and of late, I've been going for the Boss; splitting my team into two- the other two deal with the minions while I and another (usually a heavy melee character if the Boss is carrying a weapon) engage the Big guy.  It works...at least it has for me.  Especially when the Boss character can revive or replace the minions at will.  lol

"I am not a skilled martial artist. But I know a little, picked up in training with Murphy and some of the other SI cops over the years at Dough Joe's Hurricane Gym. Real fighting is only slightly about form and technique. Mostly it's about timing, and about being willing to hurt somebody. If you know more or less when to close to distance and throw the punch, you're most of the way there. But having the right mind-set is even more important. All the technique in the world isn't going to help you if you come to the fight without the will to wreak havoc on the other guy."

There is something to be learned from a rainstorm.
When meeting with a sudden shower,
you try not to get wet and run quickly along the road.
But doing such things as passing under the eaves of houses,
you still get wet. When you are resolved from the beginning,
you will not be perplexed, though you still get the same soaking.
This understanding extends to everything.

"We fight the good fight because we can.

Because the strong should defend and protect the weak.

Because those who know right from wrong should teach the ignorant.

Because no intelligent being should have his spirit shackled or his freedom stolen.

Because we cannot stand idle and watch the downtrodden suffer beneath the heal of monsters,  human and inhuman.

Because we cannot bear to be mute witnesses to the struggles, sorrows, and deaths of the savage barbarians and lost strangers (D-bees) who so desperately cling to life against all odds. To do otherwise would make us the very monsters we despise.

We will not stand by idle.

And though our efforts may be futile. And though we may suffer and perish, we will know that we did fight the good fight. That we tried to make a difference. That we stood against injustice and evil, not because we had to, but because we wanted to.

And perhaps, with a little luck, we can help the precious souls of humankind, and all good people, to ascend from the depths of despair to find their place in the sun. We can do no less than try. If only we could do more.

If nothing else, each battle lifts a man's spirit and delivers hope. It liberates the mind and ignites the imagination, offering proof that together, we can accomplish anything."

Matt Farrell: Then why you doing this?
John McClane: Because there's no body else to do it right now, that's why. Believe me, if there were somebody else to do it, I'd let them do it, but there's not. So we're doing it.

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It's not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

Proverbs 8:12-20 (I like this particular one as it is in meaning of "faith in God" and interpretation as it could be directly applied to knights - who serve the Lord)
"I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.  The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.  Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.  By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.  By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.  I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.  Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness.  My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.  I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment..."

Who has been in a church maybe 3 times in his life.

Faith, Honor, Prudence, Wisdom (The four virtues of divine justice)
Note they adorn my Order's crest in the form of the Lily Cross (The Easter Crucifix); originally adorning the Cross of Jerusalem in a different form. The Lily is the Easter flower and seen as holy and signifies purity. White lilies were said to be laid down by Mary at the site of the crucifixion on the holiest of Catholic holidays (the resurrection of Jesus) to signify and celebrate the life and sacrifice of Jesus (a day of mourning). Whether it was true or not, it has continued to be a practice by Christian pilgrims who visit the holy site.

The meaning of the full verse references Jesus's words of God after throwing the merchants out of Temple of Soloman on the day of the Sabbath for procuring their goods in a holy place of God. I took its meaning as the wisdom of God is resolute and all who love him, are loved. Justice is loving God, accepting his word, and upholding its meaning. Righteousness is practicing the word of God in life and not defiling it by profiteering on his day (i.e. Saturday is traditionally the first day of the Sabbath & such activities are not allowed). Those who love him, serve him and are loved in turn. Kings reign because of his love (the province of "divine rule" comes from this). Princes, nobles, and judges are all servants to him as well and must see God's law upheld (the notion of divine justice). Evil is arrogance and defying God's word through unsanctified acts that shall be subject to his judgment.

Riches are obtained through him and loving him, not through other means. Gold and silver is the money of men (root of evil), and following God's word (wisdom/knowledge/humbleness) is what makes a man rich, a King reign, a prince rule, a noble just, and a servant faithful, and righteous in their actions. Through practice of his word, those who serve God prove their "faith" and would be just in action against those who defy him through committed acts of pride, arrogance, and evil (the deeds that God's law prohibit in practice by those who are his children and faithful followers). Understanding and upholding the word of God in service to God brings "wisdom", to which, one understands "prudence" in action. Those who serve him - are righteous and just through "faith" and bring "honor" to his name. (Faith, Honor, Prudence, Wisdom)

"I have not invented a "new style," composite, modified or otherwise that is set within distinct form as apart from "this" method or "that" method. On the contrary, I hope to free my followers from clinging to styles, patterns, or molds. Remember that Jeet Kune Do is merely a name used, a mirror in which to see "ourselves". . . Jeet Kune Do is not an organized institution that one can be a member of. Either you understand or you don't, and that is that.

There is no mystery about my style. My movements are simple, direct and non-classical. The extraordinary part of it lies in its simplicity. Every movement in Jeet Kune-Do is being so of itself. There is nothing artificial about it. I always believe that the easy way is the right way. Jeet Kune-Do is simply the direct expression of one's feelings with the minimum of movements and energy. The closer to the true way of Kung Fu, the less wastage of expression there is.

Finally, a Jeet Kune Do man who says Jeet Kune Do is exclusively Jeet Kune Do is simply not with it. He is still hung up on his self-closing resistance, in this case anchored down to reactionary pattern, and naturally is still bound by another modified pattern and can move within its limits. He has not digested the simple fact that truth exists outside all molds; pattern and awareness is never exclusive.

Again let me remind you Jeet Kune Do is just a name used, a boat to get one across, and once across it is to be discarded and not to be carried on one's back."

From Kingdom of Heaven -
highly inaccurate movie, but very good nonetheless with some good lessons to be learned within.

And in "How to Train Your Dragon" - "We're Vikings, it's an occupational hazard!"  It's funny, but that is so inspiring.  Any time something dangerous came up, which happened plenty for me, I just thought about it and was like "yup, it's an occupational hazard" and went for it.  I've made it back every time too.  Sometimes, not in the best of shape, like Hiccup, but I made it back nonetheless.

Titus Pullo: You're just not used to it. It takes time. I've seen you kill. There's plenty of soldier in you.
Gaius Octavian Caesar: It's not the killing. It's the waving about of swords I find tedious. I dare say I can kill people readily enough as long as they're not fighting back.
Titus Pullo: Never fear young Dominus. We'll make a regular terror of you.
Gaius Octavian Caesar: At best I'll be a middling swordsman.
Titus Pullo: It's better than nothing.

If pushing yourself to your limits would give you sight, would you do it?
If there was a cure, would you let anything stand in your way?
Would you risk the haters and the critics to see you sweat?
Do you really want to see?
Would you really care if they mocked you? Laughed at you? Pointed at you? Or bad mouthed you?
Would you be concerned about your extreme goal, or embrace extreme work?
What if you had to learn hurt, trust pain and embrace struggle?
Would you still be concerned with being realistic?
Would you still figure your odds and calculate your chances?
If you had to spend more time planning your workouts and less time planning your weekends, would it even be a tough choice?
If the cure for blindness was humility and pain, would you go for it?
If the cure for blindness was looking foolish would you risk it?
If seeing again took a fight, would you start swinging?
If the cure was doing things you can't do, would you attempt them?
If a few extra hours, a few more drops of sweat, and a little bit more blood is all it took, would you claim your sight?
Do you really want to succeed?
Then choose to be blind and do what it takes to see.
Because if you don't, then you're just blind anyway.

Gosh, it's been quite a while since I watched any of the Rocky movies. When I did watch them again a few years ago (the first time probably since the '80s), I had a completely different mindset than before. When I was young, I didn't really get the fighter mentality.

I mean, as a kid seeing the first film, it was like "What? He didn't win? What's this 'going the distance' thing?" It made sense on a much deeper level, seeing it again as an adult.

I know these clips are from the more recent film, though. :)

Quote
As we walk down the road of our destiny
And the time comes to choose which it gonna be
The wide and crooked, or the straight and narrow
We got one voice to give and one life to live
Stand up for something or lie down in your game
Listen to the song that we sing
It's up to you to make it be
I guess I'll see you, when you see me

"If you have confidence in your own words, aspirations, thoughts, and actions and do your very best, you will have no need to regret the outcome of what you do. Fear and trembling are lot of the person who, while stinting effort, hopes that everything will come out precisely as he wants."

"Each of us has his cowardice. Each of us is afraid to lose, afraid to die. But hanging back is the way to remain a coward for life. The Way to find courage is to seek it on the field of conflict. And the sure way to victory is willingness to risk one's own life."

"Studying the martial Way is like climbing a cliff: keep going forward without rest. Resting is not permissible because it causes recessions to old adages of achievement. Persevering day in, day out improves techniques, but resting one day causes lapses. This must be prevented."

"It is possible for even the smallest of accolades of achievement to be truly worthwhile without tears and toil?"

"If I strike hard enough, your entire body is a pressure point."
