Title: Greetings
Post by: Lord Chagatai on 2013-04-03, 20:38:13
Greetings to All,
Please allow me to introduce myself, my name is Lord Murchadh (moor-ha) and I have been interested in the ages ever since I can remember. As a young lad I played Dungeons and Dragons which sparked me to become a Knight in everything I do. Since then I have grown a bit and gotten away from the fantasy side of the ages and studied history and the Knights of old. Most recently I have been interested in the Asian culture of the ages and especially the Mongols. But I think my heart really turns to the west and the European Knights. My heritage being Irish I think that is the way to go.

I am also an active member of the SCA, in the Kingdom of the Outlands, and the barony of al-Barran. There is where I play my interest in the Asian culture and my persona is Mongol. My SCA name is Lord Chagatai Burilgi, I am squire to Sir Chinua al-Narran.

I love everything Medieval and am always willing to learn. I have also taken an interest in following a Knightly path, whether it is in the SCA or in real life, I strive to live my life by the code. I always try to defend the weak, provide justice but try to temper it and be merciful. I also try to live by my other virtues but these are the ones I strive to keep "real" all the time. I think it is important to keep to the code in everything you do, it just makes you a better person.

So my path has brought me here to this forum and to the Order. I found you guys on Facebook and it really smacked me in the face that I needed to be around you guys to help guide me down my path. I would really love to become a member of the Order and participate in everything that you guys do. I feel that being here is going to enrich my learning and make my path easier to follow everyday. Thank you, good lords, for allowing me to be a part of this. I hope that I can become one of the Order soon.

Lord Murchadh

Lord Murchadh,

Greetings and well met! I think you'll find a lot of like minded folks here at Modern Chivalry. And remember it's not all business here. We like to nerd out on a lot of things from history,  to science fiction, so feel free to let your hair down from time to time.

Well met, Lord Murchadh.  I think it fortuitous as I have been flirting with the idea of doing a Mongol impression.  Came across a fantastic eastern lamellar harness that I ultimately did not get- it was sold locally in Ukraine, otherwise...I'd have a new lamellar harness.  I really like the look...perhaps we'll talk on the subject sometime.  Welcome to the forum.

Nice kits, both- is your surcoat made of leather in the first pic?  It looks heavy, well made.  Here's the one I missed out on:

Is that the wyvern on your elbow cops? Neat idea.

Sir William,
No its a yoke made out of suede and leather and then a kidney belt with horseman's chaps to protect the legs and buttocks/back of legs....its just a linen tunic underneath it all...very period for a mongol horseman rig...its not that heavy and I made it myself....so thanks.

James,
Yes it is a wyvern on my elbows but what I am wearing are called bauzebans (sp) and the way they work is vambraces and elbows in a single pattern...I will take a better pic of them and post it...I love my rigs and I love fighting....hopefully I can get to Pennsic someday and see everyone..

Ah, I see, I thought it was low profile elbows. Bazubands is how I see it spelled, sometimes called "bazus" for shorthand. They're eastern/persian in origin.

Welcome! And what do you mean moved away from DnD? I still have a blast with that game!  ;D
And our usual meets are VARF, MDRF, and the annual DOK events. I think only Sir Ed does Pennsic (besides the SCAdians among the order, that is).

So what year is your Mongol impression, and what region? I haven't seen much of those before. And if you wanted to multi-kit, a Gallowglass kit wouldn't be as expensive as a full knightly kit, if you want to take the Irish road.  :)

Sir Nathan,
Moved away from DnD cause family stuff and not enough time, between family, work and SCA.

My Mongol persona is around 1272 thats when Chagatai second son to temujin (genghis kahn) was born. So from 1272 until his death which if my memory stands from the secret history was in his later years...I forget the actual date. There were knights in Mongol history they were just not called Knights per se but they belonged to the Golden Horde and were Genghis' guards and closest advisors so I try to play that role and be a good squire to my knight.

Not interested in going back to my Irish persona soon but maybe. My beliefs and fighting style are more like the Asian mentality. I really like that culture as well as my heritage but thinking I am going to stick with Asian for now. I shall look into that rig though!!

oooh, LrdMurchadh...

first from a fellow newcomer, welcome!

second, my SCA persona is Japanese, age 30 in 1275... when the Mongols invaded!!  :o here's hoping we both can make the "crusade" to Pennsic as it's called around here.  I'd love to work with you just to have a Samurai vs a Mongol battle royale!
