Title: A good day to thee fellow knights.
Post by: Sir John of Felsenbau on 2011-05-09, 21:28:21
I just wanted to introduce myself. I live in the Philadelphia area and have always had an interest in knights. When my wife was alive, we used to go in period clothes every year. Last year I started again...with my sister in law and her daughter and her daughter's husband. I hope I can make some friends here and maybe see you at the pa ren faire, or even get together in Philly. By the way, my past hobby was making movies and I did make one about knights...it lasts about 1 + hours (video format) I tyhink I have a lot to offer the organization and am glad to be part of it. I need to have 2 members to sponsor me so that I can be recognized as a knight here. I already have loads of medieval things in  my collectioin, including a full set of armor. Well, that's all for now. Take care,

Sir John of Felsenbau

Welcome Sir John! I hope we do get a chance to meet in person and raise a flagon or two. My home fair is Maryland but we sometimes take a pilgrimage up to PARF on occasion, we'll have to try and coordinate a visit with you and other forum members.  :)

BTW, I just moved this over to the meet-and-greet area.

Well met Sir John,

As a relative newcomer myself, I can attest to the open, thoughtful and knowledgeable qualities of this membership.  Whether your interests lie with Renaissance Fairs, WMA, SCA, Chivalric Interests or all of the above you've found a good forum!

Living where you do have you ever been to Pennsic?

I don't know where Pennsic is. Are all the members scattered in the area? I agree it would be nice to have a get together. I have a timeline of my real and equivalent knightly adventures...don't know if that can be posted, it's long. I sent a copy of a knights certificate to Ed. I told him I'm also working on a surcoat, shield, helm and pendant for Sir William Marshal. I've made a LOT of shield and surcoats over the past few  years and my helms, which I have embelished myself, are about 30 in number. Each shield and helm have been researched for a particular knight, which I have made a brief summary of each and have framed these all over my walls. You can see my walls there's so many framed summaries. More like a museum.

Cool! Feel free to post pictures and the like, if you'd like to share them. You can click "additional options" at the bottom while composing a message, and attach up to 4 files/images in a post. There's a size limit there, so for larger files and pictures, off-site hosting would be needed, such as Flickr or Photobucket for pictures.

Pennsic is an annual event held by the SCA (which is international in scope). The event is held in PA north of Pittsburgh, usually in early August. It's huge... as in, 10,000 to 15,000 daily attendance, with most camping on-site.

Here are pictures from the two years that we went to Pennsic:

I had NO IDEA Pennsic was so HUGE...goodness, one could get lost in there!  I have GOT to get to one of these!  Now I gotta ask- what's the license plate mean?

Do you bathe while you're there or go full medieval and go without?  Didn't see any rivers or lakes, just a bank of port-a-johns.

I am just in awe over these pics...this looks like a real gas man.

Hehe, the license plate is using computer slang. "RTFM" is well known amongst programmers and system admins. It means "Read The F**king Manual". So with the word "why", I'm being a bit rebellious against that phrase. :)

Pennsic is definitely huge. I'm assuming you saw the panoramic shots from the hilltop? You can only see about a third of the site from there.

There are several ways to do Pennsic:

* You can get a nearby hotel room, but they fill up fast, and for miles. It's hard to get a room within 30 miles if you wait too long.

* Camp on site in the open-camping areas. You just pick out a spot where you can find room in one of those designated areas, and set up a tent. These areas are usually furthest from the central area where all the shops and food are. And it's a bit of a walk if you want to go use the solar showers.

* Camp with a group. There are many clans and households that get designated camping areas, and the bulk of the camping is divided up that way. When we go, we join a clan that is organized by one of my former co-workers. Some groups like this have their own heated showers, which is nice, but not all. Our group sets up a propane-heated shower.

The solar showers, from what I hear, can have lines, and the heat runs out quickly... and of course only works when the sun is out. The water always flows, it's just the heat that comes from the water pumping through boxes on the roof.

There is a pond on site, down in the lowlands, but uhm... yeah... you don't want to get in the water. Leeches and stuff. And slime, and gunk, and strange people.

One word of advice for when you go: pack clothes for all weather. And I mean ALL WEATHER. It'll be hot during the day most days. But the temperature frequently drops 20 or 30 degrees as soon as the sun hits the horizon, necessitating warm clothes as well. Rain is always possible of course. But some mornings have had snow and ice on rare occasions. And yes, it's in August. It has something to do with the altitude and its position near the mountains, or something. You have to be ready for anything.

Before my wife passed away, we used to stay overnight at the PA Ren Faire. I don't like doing a lot of driving, and with her MS she couldn't drive. I went with mys sister in law and two others, that way I didn't have to drive last year, since they were only spending the day.

Sir Edward...you ever plan on going back?

Sir John, I am with you...I am no longer a fan of long-distance road trips, but am willing to travel for a good cause.

Oh yeah, we'll go back at some point, but not this year. Kat needs better garb for hot weather before we go back, so that's a limitation we need to work out first.

Sounds like a plan...I want to go as well; convincing my wife that it would be totally fun will take some doing.  She loves the Faires...but she isn't into it as much as I can be.

I've never been, but want to go. The group I reenact with goes, but this year I didn't really have the funds and taking that large a block of time off work was not a good idea. I'm planning on going next year. If I do, I'll see if my Capt. would allow members of the board here to camp with us.

After 2 years I am still finding it hard to be totally alone, no siblings or children...it's one of the reasons I have gotten more involved in my hobby of knights and medieval history. I was hoping some of the members here lived in the Philadelphia area, so we could meet and discuss knights, etc. As well as mabye going to other Ren. Faires together.

Yeah, major life changes can be hard to adapt to. I understand.

As you know, Sir Matthew lives up your way. A good many of us are in the DC area (between MD, VA, and WV). Everyone else is more distant.

I don't make it up to PARF very often, but it's been a while now, so I'd like to visit again. The Celtic Fling in the summer is particularly fun I think, since none of the other area faires are open at that time in the summer.

I'd definitely be willing to go to Celtic Fling since I've never been...but I've never been to any other Faires besides VA and MD.

The great thing about the internet, especially here, is that even though some of us are separated by literally an ocean, we can still carry on conversations here. There is no one "local" to me, less than an hour away, with the same interests. With a daily commute of roughly 100 miles, traveling an hour on the weekends is sometimes tiresome before I even get started. It makes it harder to have social events, but the forums is a great way to stay active in-between events.

I'd definitely be willing to go to Celtic Fling since I've never been...but I've never been to any other Faires besides VA and MD.

Agreed. I was hoping to make PA last year, as I haven't been there before, but had lots of complications. This year should be no problem.

That's true about the internet...shortens the distance greatly and one can communicate on similar subjects from people all over. But I still like the personal touch where those who live in the same area can get together.

I wholly agree with that sentiment! Although I am often verbose with text and technical communication when compelled to use it, I much prefer some simply dialogue with friends.  ;)

It seems that I was remiss in posting a welcome, mt home Faire is PA, I would think by now we must have met as I am one of very few that wears full armor to that faire, other than my brothers here, and I am there most of the season. Welcome and I am sure I will see you at PA or MD at the least.
