Title: Longsword used in West Crown Finals for June '13.
Post by: Thorsteinn on 2013-06-24, 19:40:34
FinalsJuneCrown2013 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSnOQPW3fDg#ws)

Count Sir Marc de Arundel vs Viscount Sir Miles Fitz-Rauf.

It has been suggested that Sir Miles should now invest in a Titan Alloy cup.

Count Sir Marc looks like he knows his way around that longsword.  Do you have an opinion on a practical short sword for concealed permit carry? 8)

Every good Roman knows a gladius is what you need for late night creeping about. ;)

That sword of Marc's is light, maneuverable, & hits hard. He's the author of SCAbastardsword.com & this is the 3rd royal tourney he's won with it.

That's a great site by Count Sir Mark, Thorsteinn.  Do you, or anyone else, know of a short sword or gladius fighter champion who has similar information on-line? 8)

They issue those for edged weapons?  What state are you in, Master Garland?

Color me surprised...most states I've either lived in or been to seem to discourage the carrying of edged weapons en total.  Even here in MD your blade has to be 2" in length or less in order to be 'allowed' to carry it.

Concealed carry permit laws vary from state to state. As for carrying blades, those laws were NOT designed for legal carry rules of anything outside of firearms. Blades typically are either legal or dangerous weapons by design and not allotted the same guidelines under firearm laws. They have their own legal rules typically. Everything from type of blade, blade length, serrated, dual-sided, locking mechanism, etc.

Florida.  You can carry a .50 Cal machine gun and battle ax together as long as they are concealed.  The South will rise again! 8)
"If any person having or carrying any dirk, sword, sword cane, firearm, electric weapon or device, or other weapon shall, in the presence of one or more persons, exhibit the same in a rude, careless, angry, or threatening manner, not in necessary self-defense, the person so offending shall be guilty of a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083."

very true, I love living in Florida. Even open carry  of weapons is "allowed" as long as it follows those guide lines. "allowed" here equaling as long as no one complains to authorities, and even then in my experience if you can explain yourself your fine.

In NV anything under 6" is classed a tool by law thus all the court houses say "No Weapons or Knives Allowed" on the front.

Oh and we have open carry, and IIRC swords fall in a loophole of the law, but don't quote me.

Looks like he was thrusting under the shield and straight at the groin, then lifted, then the shield moved down and pushed it right back at the groin. Can't picture doing any kind of SCA heavy without a cup, especially a tournament.

I wouldn't even play with you guys w/out a cup and I trust you all implicitly!  I'm impressed that he got up after taking such a shot.  I remember when my then-2 year old gave me the hood stomp while I was holding her and I know I didn't get up for at least 3 minutes after that.  lol

I think y'all misunderstand, Miles wore a cup (SCA regs require it), it's just that I was thinking a Steel Alloy cup would be a good upgrade.

Oh, that's good then. Upgrade may be in order. Or a bigger shield. :)

The odd thing though about wearing a cup is it doesn’t always stop all the kinetic energy which can still impart enough force to achieve the same effect as a lighter direct hit. Case in point when I was a teen (many decades ago ;)) and competing in a karate tournament hosted by my dojo in which we allowed ‘light’ contact to the groin and in one of my matches the guy I was fighting hit me with a round kick at full power that dropped me like a rock even though I was wearing a cup.   :-\

I made sure my cup is now steel plated since my last SCA tourney. Anything less is asking for hurting. Now it's like having a kite shield in my pants. Or as Garth put it .... "It makes me feel kind of funny, like when we use to climb the rope in gym class". ;D
