Title: Medieval Madness Dinner Theater
Post by: Sir Brian on 2014-01-01, 12:41:12
Attention Order of the Marshal brethren and Modern Chivalry Forum members. I am posting this suggestion in the Sallyport section so locale forum members who are not part of the order can see this.

http://www.medievalmadness.com/ (http://www.medievalmadness.com/)

I propose we have a little get together for all within a reasonable travel distance to Washington DC for an evening of fellowship and fun at the Dinner Theater called Medieval Madness located in Alexandria Virginia. I suggest the later evening show on Saturday February 1, 2014 although I am can make any Saturday evening starting as early as this coming Saturday if necessary. I'm hoping a full month prior notice will enable everyone interested to plan it. What say you friends? Again this isn't just an Order of the Marshal get together, in fact I encourage any forum members who might be interested in joining the order to attend as a way to meet and greet some of the Order members that are able to go so you can get the measure of us and become better known by us in return! - So who is interested?  :)

Sounds great! I think Feb 1 is clear for me so far.

It's been a few years since we went to it, and I know they've improved the decor since then. Our impression was that it was a fun show. The ticket price is a little high, but it's a fun time, with a light-hearted show that doesn't take itself seriously. When people critique their historical accuracy (of which there is almost none), they point out the word "madness" in the title. :)

When we went, they were very happy to see us in garb/armor. They respond pretty positively to that. However, it's such a cramped space, I would recommend leaving the swords at home. The servers will be tripping over them if you have one.

This looks awesome! I would be honored to go. Alas... I do not own a magic wagon or the license to drive one. I would have to take a train, after using my persuasive skill, which is only at 36, to convince them to let me go. ESPECIALLY in a maille lol. But a month in advanced notice is great thank you. I will definitly make an attemp to go. Do not expect it though. Luckily i live in PA so I am relevantly close. I also believe I speak for my brethren Sir Nate. On that note, children under 18 are can not be admitted without a parent or legal guardian. As most of you may know, I am only 16.

well I looked into it more and Figured our grandmother could take us.
Its either a new game or this and tickets from philly to D.c. are $38. It wouldn't be impossible, I just need to find out where it is exactly and How to get there from the train station.
http://www.medievaltimes.com/baltimore/abouttheshow.aspx (http://www.medievaltimes.com/baltimore/abouttheshow.aspx)
I also propose this medieval times restaurant. I saw a bill board for it on the way to M.d. Renfaire last year.  it goes as low as 30 dollars, and it says its in baltimore/d.c. so perhaps in that area.
though it doesn't look as medieval feel as the other restaurant. But it looks like there is alot of open seating here. But I don't know if you can wear armor or not.

But it like comparing the PA fair to the MD fair.

youch, that is a high price tag for a dinner.

If we can get a group of 8, the cost is $45 per person instead of $59 each

I think I'd go for it at $45 if we can get a group together. At $59, it's higher than Medieval Times, and while both shows aren't historically accurate, I do know the food at Medieval Times is both good and plentiful

Sir Edward, thoughts about the food at Medieval Madness?

Most likely if me And my brother go it will be with our grandma.
But perhaps medieval times would be the better choice. Plenty of seating. But it does look like a less medieval enviroment

How dare you call her grandma! You are embarressing me! Its Granny. You'll scare the others off lol. Na, shes an Irish women, could drink more than all of you put together. I think, if we were to do a party of 8, 8 of you guys should go, and me and my brother, w/ the help of our guardian to get in, will come as a separate party and join up. If you do not mind a guardian to accompony us? This would be most splended event, for i have only met Sir Edward and Sir Brian. Lets get a "roster" together so we can figure out who is going. Then make a group decision on where.

I've been with groups before to Medieval Times and it is always a good time however the problem I see with it is except prior to being seated there is  a great lack of closeness in carrying on some discussions within the entire group and once you've been seated you can only talk to the people seated to either sides of your seat. Whereas the Medieval Madness may offer a more intimate setting and allows us to linger after the last show to socialize more without an enormous crowd to contend with.  ;)

Agreed, Medieval Times is "stadium" style seating, in bench rows.

It's a nice venue, but for any meaningful conversations, not as well suited.

I say we go with medieval madness. For the goal of this trip is for everyone to get to know one another, which cannot be achieved at medieval times.

Medieval Madness is very cramped, but people are seated on both sides of the table, so it's easier to converse with your group. The show is done in multiple segments (assuming they haven't changed the format), so there's time to talk and eat between show segments.

What I recall is that the food was good, probably comparable to Medieval Times. And like MT, they also probably make a lot more money on the alcohol.

When we went previously, we had gotten $30 tickets through "Living Social" or Groupon or something like that. That's a much better deal. Our impression was that the $30 tickets were a good deal, but $60 is a little high. If we can get a $45/person rate, that would be fine I think. It covers the dinner and the show.

A minimum group of eight is what we’ll need then. Perhaps over the next 10 days, say by January 13th we can get a preliminary head count to see if we could get the group price. If we have enough wanting to go we can start planning in earnest and coordinating the purchasing of tickets etc.  ???

I'll ask my wife if she'd like to go again. It'll help get us toward eight.

Well my lovely Fae wife will be going as well, she'll be the one pouting about giving up a night of babysitting the grandbaby which means I'll have to bribe the kids with a date night the night before, so we'll already have four if you lady wants to go! ;)

Its another 3 for me and my brother plus our legal guardian. Thats 7. If enough people want to go, we may have to make two parties of 8.
Title: Re: Medieval Madness Dinner Theater

very well, but we will have to arrange groups for the 45 dollar part.
Maybe people in state to state should try and go in groups. But patience is key for going to this. finding out people who are going, me and my brother will get someone to go takes us.(Ill decorate them, whoever it will be with stuff.) just need to wait and see.

Good news insofar as a couple of renfaire friends who live in the DC area wanted to go as well so we should easily make the minimum of 8 for a discount group rate. I’ll contact the place and see how we can go about setting up our group ticket purchases. – Maybe call our group: “Marshal’s Friends

...or does that sound too much like a bad 70’s gay porn movie title? :P

lol, well, whatever name you think is best. ;)

My lady said she'd be interested at the $45 price point. $60 would be a bit steep. So if we're on target to hit the group rate, that's great.

We're going to knock their socks off if we show up in garb/armor.

I would leave helmets and swords at home. There's no extra space to spare at the tables.

A count of heads that miss their bodies or the none literal term? Makes you wonder where the term "head count" comes from. Maybe it refers to the count of heads after a raid. After they count and make a pile of heads like in Kingdom of Heaven. For it may be easier to count heads than bodies. Hm... I'll have to look into that.

Well by my reckoning we should qualify for the discount:

Me and my wife and two other guests will make four. Sir Edward and his lady Kat is another two for a total of Six. Sir Nate, Sir Aiden and G-Ma is three for a total of nine which is one more than we need for the minimum of eight in a group. I will call the place later today and hopefully setup a group name:

Order of the Marshal’

So who is definitely in and for how many seats?

Sir Wolf?
Sir James?
Sir Nathan?
Sir William?
Sir Ian? – Long drive I know but maybe you could ‘borrow’ a helicopter?  :)
Squire Silvanus?
 ???

Okay I’ve contacted Medieval Madness and they have only one show that Saturday which starts at 7:00 PM. They can setup a group rate for us with the following:

Less than eight in the Group is $49 per person plus Tax comes out to $53.41 per person and you still have to tip your server (15 -18%).

With groups having eight or more the cost is $45.00 plus Tax and Tips added in for $57.88 per person.

I can reserve as many ‘seats’ that I think our group will need with the purchase of at least one ticket. They also recommended reserving the most seats our group might need and canceling the extra seats out when it is confirmed that they are not needed up until the day before the show therefore I am considering reserving sixteen seats by this Friday afternoon.

I will be buying my tickets when I make the reservation and setting up the group rate, everyone going will then have to contact them and purchase your tickets. So everyone who might be interested in going think it over and please let me know if you are definitely going or not so I can cancel unneeded reservations!  :)

I mean if its only an hour I may not go because, no offense, I don't know if i want to pay that much money. Plus my guardians would not approve. For i still have to pay for a hotel

No there is only one dinner/show on that Saturday starting @ 7:00 PM. The website states there are two shows but there is only one. Also we won't have to rush off after the dinner/show is over. :)

After I make the initial reservations then everyone can call in and purchase their tickets at the group rate. Realize however in my other post that the larger group of 8 or more pay $45.00 PLUS taxes and gratuity for a total of $57.88 per person. ;)

Well we already booked a hotel a few blocks from there, And our Mother may also join in, But when does the theater End?
What should we do after words anyways, It would be interesting if a group of knights were walking around Alexandria

I would plan on getting there before show time. The parking can sometimes be tricky in downtown Alexandria (lots of meter parking), so I would allow time for hunting for a parking spot AND then walking AND still getting there 20 or 30 minutes before the show.

I'm probably going to wear lighter armor (mail, surcoat, maybe padded cuisses), and will be in all of it before driving over, so I don't have to finish armoring in the cold on a busy street.

I don't recall how long it runs. I want to say 90 minutes or so. But yes, since it's the only show, they won't chase you out.

So well get a good amount of time for social

Chris is in too. I'm calling today on lunch break to reserve our two tickets. He asked what kind of a show it is, "Dinner? A show? A town hall execution?" and I told him dinner and a show, doors open at 6:30 and show starts at 7, do not be late. I informed him that there are no executions that I am aware of, but should squires arrive late...

He said that the late arrival penalty used to be having to wear the small surcoat, and execution seems really strict now. :D

I just spoke with Medieval Madness to increase our seats to 16 and they are going to accommodate that request but it will be best not delay purchasing your tickets as the show is currently full however they expect a few cancellations so our group of 16 is okay.

Also Order members with the rank of squire and knight do not forget to wear your garter badges! I think I have enough and will bring some of those special ‘OotM-Make a Wish’ pins for our family and friends of the order who will be attending. ;)

Are photos allowed at this event? I see it says no intrusive electronics (i.e. cell phones) but nothing specifically about cameras. If so, I demand at least one photo of the whole group...if possible and not too much trouble. :)

This is going to knock the chauses off of them! 16 men-at-arms/knights/squires! This is trully an event I am excited for and look forward to attending. Sadly I'm going to get the thought in my mind "arn't you a little short to be a knight?" Lol. Btw, how are we all going to fit in there? All at a table, push 2 tables together, sit at seperate tables? Oh and if you are worried about the photo taking during the show, take it afterwards.

I just want to point this out again, so no one forgets--  The space in there is REALLY cramped. Take that into consideration in terms of what you want to wear/bring.

Personally, I'll do mail armor, not plate.
Title: Re: Medieval Madness Dinner Theater

I might not even wear a gambeson. Just a bit thick if we're going to be crowded.

This is going be so terrible(terrible as in awesome)

I'm still undecided and will wait for the weather forecast. If it is colder I will wear armor for the benefit of the gambeson and if warmer then I'll go in my soft kit.  :-\

Sir Brian - thanks for asking.  This will be our "Valentine's Day" outing, methinks so the girls will sit this one out.  We thought perhaps they could come to the next event if e could make this a bi-annual gather :)

BTW, is it usual for kids to come with the family for dinner at MM?

Looking ahead, Maruska and I were talking about while it's still cold out to having folks here for a cookout/appropriately themed gaming night (i.e., War of the Ring or Shadows Over Camelot).  Perhaps we can talk about it Sat evening...

So what is our final head count and attendance list? This is going to be fun!

Something my wife was suggesting was the idea of meeting up in front of the Hard Times Cafe right at 6:30, so we can walk over and "wow" them as a group. It's about 2 blocks away, on the other side of the same street.

Well if Sir Nathan's friend joins us that will be exactly 16 in our group. If my wife's friend shows up then it will be 17 and if her boyfriend can make it a solid 18!  :)

Meeting at the Hard Times Cafe sounds like a great idea however I suggest we meet there at 6:15 so we can walk the two blocks and be there right at 6:30 when they open. I need to drop something off at the kitchen anyways. ;)

So, if I recall correctly, we're all to meet at 6:15pm in front of the Hard Times Cafe...anyone have an address I can put in my GPS?  What're we wearing?  It is supposed to be cold, but not as withering as its been of late.  I think I'll opt for a soft kit, no armor.  My wife wants to know if we're all going in garb or if streetclothes are fine.

Title: Re: Medieval Madness Dinner Theater
Post by: Sir Edward on 2014-01-28, 18:31:24

I think the plan is for most of us to be in some sort of garb, either soft kit or light armor. Modern clothes are of course fine as well. My wife will probably wear her medieval dress, and I'm probably going to go with hauberk, gambeson, and surcoat.

Here's a set of directions, going from the Hard Times to Medieval Madness, so you can see both locations:

I may not even wear gambeson. I find it heavy, But I probably will.
But Ill see, I think all I need now is a new belt, My old one was able wide, and wouldnt shift around. Ill have to use that one.
But Ill be in my new templar surcoat, Ill have my coif.
Ill have all of my kit on, just not Helm or sword.(lol, maybe they should just have a helm and shield hanger, along with a weapon rack)(or we could all be bring nerf swords, shields, daggers, etc.)

Whatever I bring Im sure Ill look the best.

Alas you will all be missed! However since we’ve already had such a great turn out, methinks this will have to be an annual event around this time of year so we ALL have plenty of time to enter it into our schedules yes?!?  ;)

It was an awesome night! So sorry not all of our brethren and forum friends could be there! Silvanus was suppose to attend but PM'd me earlier yesterday that he had to go to the hospital to stay with a friend who was in a grievous skiing accident. Most noble and considerate of him and I look forward to another time when we will have the company of such a excellent example of chivalry!

The turnout was so good I suggest we make this at least an annual event!  :)

Oh and as for the creepy eyes I hope Dean & Sam Winchester don't lurk on our forum because they might mistake us for Shapeshifters! ;)

Well Silvanus preformed a noble deed, I wondered were he had been.
Yes this will Definetly be a good annual thing. Next time more knights!

Most enjoyable and it was indeed the highest honor to be in the esteemed company of such fine gentlemen (and ladies).

Many thanks to Sir Brian for organizing and best Day of Birthe wishes again to Sir Edward.

Only one casualty to report: my pendant (leather shield with brass adornment displaying a "wheel") was lost at some point during the evening.  I have e-mailed MM to ask them to look around, but it has some sentimental value as it was a gift from the armorers of my harness in Novi Sad.  Ah well, such is the cost of celebration :)

Do we have any forum members living in Alexandria by chance?

I haven't left Alexandria yet, I could stop by and ask them if they have it.

It was a great night of merriment and revelry!

Medieval Madness has definitely improved over the last 4 years, since we were last there. When my lady and I had attended before, it had only been open maybe a couple of months. The walls were bare, the food was simple, the sword fight was "amusing". :)

This time, the ambiance was very nice. They've decorated well, and even improved the furniture. The show is re-written periodically so it's not always the same. The sword fight was better, though still somewhat limited due to confined space, and they were wearing great-helms, which of course limits visibility.

But what impressed me, is that now they have researched some period dishes, and also only serve ale, wine, and mead that comes from breweries, wineries, and meaderies that have been around for at least 600 years. All of the alcohol is imported.

All in all, we had a great time! I'll post my pictures soon.

lol!

Oh no! Might have to call them and see if it turned up.

I'll call mm and stop by, and see if they have the pendant.
If I find it
I'll keep it secret and keep it safe.

YES! This was a most spectacular event that I plan to attend each year! My mother seemed to be a riot and embarrest me enough haha, but whats a good occasion without some humility lol. Fear not about the photo quality for I am sure that the many wives last night took many wonderful pictures. It was a pleasure to meet most of you and hope to see you all again. Hopefully those of you who could not attend can next time! Sir Gareyth we will try and find your belonging.

Me too, but that's exactly what I think is the case. When I went several years ago, they were blown away, but they hadn't been around very long yet. Now, I think they get costumed patrons quite frequently, so nothing shocks them anymore.

Lol, yeah I guess that probably would be a norm there.
Next time everybody should go as superheroes. That's probably something they don't see very often. ;)

Your on to something. Knights can wear super hero costumes and the squires side kick outfits. Sir Brian, you are instantly green lantern.
