When I took my surcoat and mantle to the dry cleaner recently, every last ermine I had inked on the mantle smeared/faded, so I had to make a new one for the faire tomorrow. To spiff it up without getting into the same mess, I left the inside plain and added cinquefoil-shaped dags. Here's a quick pic.

That is really sharp looking! Get some photos in full kit!

Bummer about the ermines, but that's a fine replacement. Very nice! And I second Sir Ian—full kit photos!
-
nice ;D

Here's a shot from the St Louis Ren Faire today. I can't believe it was only 68 degrees! Great day!

Did knights do battle with their mantles attached?
-
No. Tournament only.
-
Outstanding. :)

You're looking exemplary, Sir Patrick. Huzzah!
-
It's getting there. Of course we all know "there" is a constantly moving target!
-
Looks great! Where'd you get the pattern, Sir Patrick?
I need to do mine for MD RenFest...

Looking good Sir Patrick!:)

On dry cleaners- they'll mess it up, but they won't replace the item, at least, not at one that messed up a Crusader surcoat. It says dry cleaning, but the cross bled all over it. When I approached them about it, they apologized, but said that was all they were going to do. I took my business elsewhere from that point.

No pattern really. I just tapped some butcher paper around the crown and drew the basic shape. Once I got that how I wanted it I folded it in half and cut it out. I traced that pattern on another sheet butcher paper and laid out the dag placement using the charge patterns from my surcoat. There is no top to my mantle. The helm is conical which would be a nightmare to tailor, and no one sees it anyway because of the crest.

Sounds like a workshop thread to me! ;)

I think I need to make a mantel myself, they look very dashing.
