Title: Mood Music
Post by: Sir William on 2010-11-03, 19:25:41
I was wondering...do any of you Knights listen to some sort of 'mood music' to put you into the medieval frame of mind?  Looking for some good music to listen to that isn't contemporary, although I must admit, I just discovered Stone Temple Pilots and I'm kinda diggin that which led to this question.

That's a good question. I have a variety of CDs from the renfaires that cover a wide range of styles. I'll have to look at what I have. I definitely want to expand this to have more actual period music rather than being almost entirely renfaire music, if you know what I mean. Though I should mention that we have most of Owain Phyfe's albums. If you're not familiar with him, he's an extremely skilled performer, fluent in several languages, and performs period songs in a variety of languages. Like eight or more. I forget how many exactly.

What I've been listening to this afternoon is "The Celestine Prophecy" and "Epic" by Christopher Franke (the dude who did the soundtrack for the Babylon5 series). They're not medieval or period music, more like modern electronic music. But there's a sort of "peering back through time" sort of feel to them.

I'll look him up, Owain Phyfe.  I'd be interested in both medieval and medievally-inspired music, to be frank.

Yep, he's a renfaire performer, but he rarely makes it over to MDRF. He's awesome.

From the renfaires I have a combination of:

Albannach,
Cast in Bronze (carillon),
Lunasa
Medieval Baebes,
Melissa Kacalanos (hurdy gurdy),
Owain Phyfe,
The Rogues,
Teribus,
Vince Conaway (hammered dulcimer).

I'll also mix in:

Secret Garden,
Loreena McKinnett,
Clannad,
Darby Devon,
Connemara,
Jared Denhard (Idylls of the King, Canterbury Suite),
Joanie Madden (Song of the Irish Whistle)

And that's just what I have bought/ripped into iTunes. Kat has so much more that I haven't had a chance to borrow from her. :) Always on the lookout for more too.

Yea, both of those are epic.  I love the LOTR trilogy soundtrack too...need to get that one.  I like KoH's soundtrack too, come to think of it.

Sir Edward...you've got quite a collection already....awesome.

I have a wide range of Faire music and one period disc. The Period disc is called Songs From The Tavern but I have several discs from the Rogues, Scythian (some are sort of periodish), Clannad, Albannach, Corvus Corax, Medieval Baebes, Arcona Reel Band, Tartan Terrors, Clann An Drumma, and Wolgemut.

One of my favorites is Circa Paleo whose has Jenny O'Conner from the now defunct Emuseki
duet. If you can catch her act at a renfaire you can still purchase some of the Emuseki CD's from her.  ;)

I listen to Arcana as well as soundtracks for the Medieval Total War games. Heres Arcana http://www.myspace.com/peterbjargo It's basically dark wave music played with medieval instruments but it fits my mood enough for it.

I also like to listen to anything that pumps me up, regardless if it's period or not.  Linkin Park, STP, CCR, MotorHead, Theory of a Deadman, Clancy Brothers, Gaelic Storm, Dropkick Murphy's, etc etc :D

Check out Wardruna.  They attempt to faithfully recreate the music of the Vikings, and it sounds awesome.  It's kind of ambient and cathartic.  And for those of you who might be metalheads, you may recognize the long-haired vocalist as Gaahl, formally of Gorgoroth.  I own their first album, which is based on the runic alphabet.  I think they're releasing another album in a couple months.  Many, if not all of the instruments they use are homemade and attempts at reproductions of period instruments.  The leader of the band, the short-haired dude made most of them himself afaik.

I feel thinking about it, this needs to be here.  It was proof that there was hope that good swashbuckling, spine tingling, inspirational music still exists, when back then all I heard was electronica, rap, and "R&B"...

and then most recently, I love how it's a male singing versus the female voices for the original trilogy.  EPIC

I found out about this artist via my friends who spend a ton of time on Youtube.  She's excellent:
Reignite - Mass Effect/Shepard Tribute Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=re32xnyYP3A#)
this song is for Mass Effect, but the lyrics are gorgeous and very inspirational.  The music is based off the soundtracks for the games, but the lyrics are hers.  She's also done this for a song based on HALO:
Frozen Sleep - Halo 4 / Cortana Tribute Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72oJGTPSWIM#)

again, gorgeous.

My friends found about her from doing covers for Skyrim.  And I have to admit, if she were a bard in that game, I'd have just gotten drunk, listened to her sing the songs, and Alduin would have won!
Skyrim vs Malukah - Dragonborn Comes Main Theme Live Action (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpmxffD4qKM#ws)

yeah, she's EPIC.  I've been listening to "reignite" quite a bit lately

Oh, I'm a big fan of Malukah...I think her renditions of Skyrim's bard songs are better than what's in the game.  Malufenix on YT of course.

Sirs,

http://youtu.be/t3g1XMakoEQ (http://youtu.be/t3g1XMakoEQ)

This is the first song from the Oscar winning Score The Lion in Winter by John Barry, 1968.

Regis regum rectissimi
prope est dies domini,
dies irae et vindictae,
tenebrarum et nebulae,
diesque mirabilium
tonitruorum fortium,
dies quoque angustiae,
maeroris ac tristitae.

Day of the king most righteous,
The day is nigh at hand,
The day of wrath and vengeance,
And darkness on the land.
Day of thick clounds and voices,
Of mighty thundering,
A day of narrow anguish
And bitter sorrowing.

Tim

You never said what mood

I've been listening to this:

Ha! Never thought anyone else would even know who Von Ziegler is! Check out his requiem album, too; it's not medieval, it's a bit of mixture, but it's how I first found him. He also has a "2 hours of celtic music" mix on YouTube (he posted it himself, it's legit).. it's only about 80 minutes, not a full 2 hours, but still cool. :)

I know these are definitely modern, and it is Linkin Park.  But for me, they've always been there since graduating High School and signing up.  They're still there for me now, and I do enjoy listening to them before a tournament.

I listen to these three in this order to help meditate before a tournament.  Helps put things in perspective and for me, why I do what I do when they say "and salute to those that hold your favour"

Linkin Park - The Catalyst (With Lyrics) (Full HD) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0qCdLhZSzc#ws)
Linkin Park - Castle Of Glass [Lyrics/HD] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5g-dHTrNNGQ#)
BURN IT DOWN - LINKIN PARK (Lyric Video) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgEKLhvCCVA#ws)
Linkin Park - In My Remains (lyrics) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrThXIsuwAc#ws)

I also didn't put up the music videos, they're all very good.  Just Castle of Glass especially hits home hard for me, and I'm sure it does others here as well.  If you wish to see those, and if you haven't please do so, they're excellent.
